OLD Vintage Automatic Percolator General Electric GE Coffee Maker REVIEW and How To Use 94P15

Ойын-сауық

This Vintage 9 cup Automatic Percolator Coffee maker made by General Electric Still works and make a great / strong pot of coffee. This coffee maker brings back memories of How they used to drink coffee at school functions for the parents. It took a while to brew but it was just a Blast From the Past in coffee. They used to brew coffee a lot hotter back in the past.

I just bought one from Ebay - great taste, brings back great memories. I just started buying everything from the 50-60's, and 70's era; when things were made better, and made to last. I bought an original 70's Polaroid, Lady's Sunbeam electric razor, and transistor radio on the way.

My mom used to drive a school bus, in the 60's. When I was with her and we went back to the little shack where bus drivers would go when they were done, they had a coffee pot on the little table, and I was allowed to have some coffee. I never tasted coffee like that, since, that I can remember. Percolator coffee tastes like coffee. Thank you for this review. I just got an old percolator, and am looking forward to school bus coffee again. :)

@fenfrk, I am 65 years old. When I was a kid we would visit my aunt, uncle and cousins often. My aunt was a coffee drinker and a glass Pyrex Flameware percolator was her coffee pot. When she made coffee as she did every time we visited, I was fascinated and mesmerized watching that percolator do its magic. I was just tall enough to be eye level with the gas burner of the stove. Jump 35 years ...I am at a flea market and I see the same percolator sitting on the ground all by itself being ignored. I ran to get it and scooped it up. It was $25 and I couldn't have been happier. I would have gladly paid whatever the price was. I lived about an hour away and looked at that pot the whole time we were driving home. It was filthy, but in good shape. No chips, nicks or scratches. This was some family's coffee pot. I wondered how many times coffee was made in this percolator before everyone started their busy days. What was its history that it was waiting for me to find it that day? Thoughts and memories of Aunt May Anne flooded my mind. When we got home I couldn’t get out of the car fast enough. After a serious cleaning, I was ready for some coffee. I filled the pot, added the coffee, turned on the burner, and remembered all the times I watched my Aunt Mary Anne make coffee. I was still fascinated and transfixed by the rising bubbles and distinct sound this percolator makes. The aroma of fresh coffee quickly filled my nose and I was a child in my Aunt's kitchen once again… I have been making coffee with that flea market percolator for all these years. My Aunt is gone now but every time I make coffee I am a little kid in her kitchen watching magic before my eyes. I toast my Aunt Mary Anne with the first cup in thanks for introducing me to this work of art and then I enjoy the best cup of coffee in the world! Thanks Aunt Mary Anne. I can’t wait until we are once again together sharing a magical cup of coffee...

How I miss spending time with my grandmother and chewing the fat over a cup of tea, coffee and some English “biscuits”. Simple times but great times. I was so close to my grandmother from being very young into my 50’s when she passed away. I loved taking the bus and train shopping with her on Saturdays as a kid then going to the lunch counter at Kresges and Woolworths. We lived close to her off and on. When you opened it up, I noticed that the tube didn't have a spring. Most models have a spring, which keeps pressure between the basket and the top of the pot. Helps you keep the grounds from getting into your coffee, if the basket lid is too loose. Mine was missing a spring, so I ordered one off of Amazon. Took care of my grounds problem. The pot will work without the spring, but I'm pretty sure you'll end up with more grounds than you would prefer. Happy brewing!

Set up the pot, turn it on, hop in the shower then get out to the aroma of fresh brewed! Can you tell me what spring you purchased? I cannot find one that says it will work for GE percolators. It can be set to whatever strength you want the coffee to perk. The other percolator is from the 1950's and looks like a fancy silver pot with etched design. It has no adjustment knob on it. As a kid in the 80's, I remember a lot people still bought and used percolators. By that time they had some models that had a glass body that you could see the coffee perk. Young person online here. I picked one of these up at an antique shop in very good condition and I want to use it soon. What kind of ground coffee do I need? A video another commenter linked said these old styles of coffeemakers require a more coarse grind that isn't usually sold in stores- does this apply to the good old GE model as well?

  • @Sharko-nv5gd

    @Sharko-nv5gd

    2 жыл бұрын

I've used an old Sunbeam AP10 percolator, as well as a Sunbeam c20b siphon coffee maker for some time now. I find for the siphon/vacuum method, use a coarse grind that is akin to coffee ground for a french press. Now for the percolator, if the holes are tiny, you should be able to use a standard drip coffee maker grind, but, if the holes are bigger in the basket and the basket lid, you probably want something a bit more coarse like you mentioned, so the coffee grounds won't make it through the holes. Of course back in the day, grocery stores would have sold percolator grind coffee that was perfect for a percolator but now not so much.. The most controllable thing to do for this is to get a coffee grinder. I usually use an old manual burr grinder (which grinds even granules of coffee to a very fine grade), but lately I found a blender does the job very well and much faster. That is, for a coarser grind, trying to get anything finer like for espresso just won't cut it. Then again, it is an old Osterizer from the 70's with the original blades.. If you do use a blender and have whole coffee beans, just put in the desired amount into the blender jar, and pulse the beans until it is similar in texture to kosher salt. Maybe a little bit smaller. This works best for me. If you would rather not bother with any of the sizes of grinds of coffee, you can just use a filter in your percolator. Yes, it is possible, you can even buy special percolator filters on amazon. Drip coffee maker filters also work, just position the filter over the top of the stem (with the basket on the stem), and push the filter down into the basket. Dump your coffee grounds into the basket as normal. A filter will also absorb a lot of the oils from the coffee, producing a cleaner cup. Some people say to wet the the basket before adding your coffee to prevent fine grounds from falling through, I don't find that this works, but see what works for you. The standard measurement of coffee to water (if you measure by volume) is one tablespoon per cup of water. That would be 8 oz of water, per level tablespoon of coffee. It's best to use cold filtered water rather than tap water, since filtered makes better coffee. If the percolator brews at a super high temperature, I find it best to use less coffee for one that brews hotter. I tried my same coffee ritual in a newer Presto made percolator and it was far too strong. Experimentation is key though. All of the information I provided here is just based on my own findings.. All in all, either use a filter for a cleaner cup and don't worry too much about the grind size, or just grind your own beans to the correct size grade and get a very rich cup of coffee.

Wow I would love to see the TWA version. You should post a video, I bet people would love to see OLD TWA items. Thanks for watching and this coffee maker makes one hot cup of coffee.

Go to a thrift store, I'm sure you'll find a suitable cord for a buck or so.

I have an older one a bit more fancy. It takes less than five minutes from start to finish.

My mum had used this GE’s percolator for at least more than 46years(my age last year), and passed away last year, and now I have continued to use this here in Japan!! I wanted to post the picture of mine but can’t do on youtube. This has worked soooooo well and I love this. A part of it, that is the part cups numbering ‘4’ is little broken these days, small amount of coffee leaking. I feel very sorry and I want to buy like this type of percolator. And today I came across your post. Before WWⅢ, I want to say ‘thank you’to various people on the earth. Thank you so much sharing good memories with you and my family.

I can't see the video because of a black square that covers the pic.

Auto drip is all plastic so with your coffee you are consuming all the leached chemicals from the plastic...I just go with metal or ceramic no longer use auto drip. Pour over is a nice option as well

You’ve added too much water for the amount of ground coffee!

I wanted to buy a vintage perk. This one gets great reviews. But 17 minutes to brew a pot? That’s a deal breaker for me

You could put it on an external plug-in timer.

Concerning that "mild - strong" dial, the more you turned it to the "strong" side, the longer it would percolate. Back in the olden days, people would crank that dial up to "strong" all the time. To understand percolated coffee and find out how terrible it is and why people switched over to drip coffee makers, watch this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d22V2Mx9adjNiMY.html

Again love the coffee stories!! that is funny how everyone would turn it to strong. maybe they thought strong meant more caffeine. That video link is a good video thanks for sharing.

Because I live at a high altitude, I get a superior cup of coffee with a percolator. Water boils at 203F here, which is not hot enough to extract the bitter alkaloids that percolators do at sea level.
