Old Top Gear - Rolls Royce Alpine Tour 1993

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Tony Mason accompanies owners of Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts in 1993 as they recreate James Radley's 1,650 mile journey through 19 Alpine passes without having to open the bonnet of his Ghost throughout.
Quite an achievement now, but Radley achieved this in 1913!

About 7 of 8 years ago I met John F Kennedy, his wife and the James Radley Silver Gohst in Hum, Croatia. As a car enthousiast I loved to see the RR and talks with John about it. He invited me for the next day to Buzet. I went there and was invited again to make that day a trip. It went to be an unforgetaball day, which I still remember and brings back tears of luck and happiness of meeting John F Kennedy (AKA James Radley), his wunderfull wife end car. THANK YOU FOR THAT WUNDERFULL MEETING AND INVITING JOHN!

This are beautiful cars but a common problem with all early cars 1900 to 1930 there where always some type of mechanical problem so one had some knowledge of been a mechanic that is why all cars came with a tool box.

Do you think one of those owners would tow me on my mobility scooter all the way? That would be my only way to do it. Lol.

You really have to be a driver to get down some of the passes in a heavy car with a crash gearbox, narrow tyres, and no front brakes.

Thanks for uploading this. I have the tape whoch was sold to us members then, but it's slighly different and I always wondered why Jeremy Clarkson was mentioned under the credits of the tapet. Now, here he is. It's also nice to see the late The Hon Alan Clark, a great chap and great Silver Ghost enthusiast!

Such a cool video. It is really nice to be able to learn about the early history of motorsports. So thank you for uploading this video. In the United States where I am it is hard to find any information about Rolls Royce or Bentley Motor Cars so as a fan this video is quite a treat.

Is it really ten years since I first watched this? It's a splendid film. Not just for the subject matter, but it reminds me that back in 1993 I bought my first roadworthy classic car, not a Rolls Royce but a 1953 Standard, and that my holidays at the time were similarly less grand - inter-railing round Europe. How I would have loved to have joined this fine mixture of folk in these great cars!

My grandmothers family had one of these, they rented it to a museum and never got it back. I am trying to find it, my grandmother had rights to it, but would have to pay costs for its care all these years.

@@TR4man thanks for getting back to me. I'm wondering how/ if I can find the original copy of this episode, so it was 1993 and the title was rolls royce alpine challenge. Just my company is creating our own alpine trial, would be great to watch some of that original footage.

It`s not bad, it`s just from a different age, tv was different in the 90`s you know ;) It`s a good show, casual, lots of interviews with interesting people and a bunch of history, which is what the programme is about..

TopG ear was still a very enjoyable TV programme for me in the 1990s. By 2002 everything on The BBC had changed, so I have not had a TV at home since then. I'll agree that my views are old fashioned by now, but that is okay. Best wishes from George

It's quite pity that same company that made reliable cars made in times engineering was in diapers, there was no mechanized production precision of these days, each part manufactured was sort of original ....... and same company ended up making cars with very little engineering progress for decades.
