James Bowden Old top gear was meant to be an informative auto review program with little humor. In 2002 the series got revamped with a more comedic tone, and that's when the presenters started coming out of their shells.

they've had soft-close trunks for estates as extra since mid 80's. one i know had an s124 200T from 1988 with soft-close trunk, while volvo fans were dreaming of powersteering and central locking. ;)

coolakiIlen007 My dads old '88 760 Turbo Intercooler would would disagree with that statement. Very well optioned, even better than Mercedes. I owned a S124 300TE, A124 E320 and a W124 300E. Great cars, but don't discount Volvo, they made some pretty cool cars back then too.

surely. I'm just assuming you're american, in which case you would have a nicely equipped volvo, as of here in sweden if your volvo has c locking you can count yourself lucky. and the 200, 700 and 900 series volvo is the nr 1 most common cars among newly licenced people in sweden. although there werent much standard options on mercedes, you could still have a lot more, we once had an -94 e 320 it had the sportsgetriebe manual gearbox, electric sunshine roof and remote locking, that was it, no rear headrests, ac, seat heaters, electric windows or leather. however how many manufacturers offered abs and airbags in the early 80's? :) i dont mock volvo we've had a few aswell but the sense of quality you get from sitting in a merc isnt quite the same in any other car imo. greetings

coolakiIlen007 This was in Canada actually, but same idea. I know the Volvos in Europe are pretty basic for the most part, most European cars here are optioned up. I will agree with the feeling of quality though, the Mercedes definitely reminded me of the old Volvos but better put together and higher end materials. That 760 was a hell of a car for an 88 though, my dad bought it, drove it 3 years and put about 40,000km on it and still sold it for more than he paid for it.

Love my W140. Couldn’t think of a car I’d rather own. I have a 1992 500SEL with 87k miles and it’s absolutely amazing to drive, I get lots of compliments on it. Supremely comfortable, quick, packed with features and overall just a great package.

My friend has one of these; 500 SEL, same color, grey interior. USDM For a car of the period, it is an absolute masterpiece. His is ticking past 160,000 miles soon, and refuses to die. Almost all of the features Clarkson pointed out still work, it still pulls hard and corners amazingly, and as he found out this summer when someone tried to break into his car by shooting out the back window, the double-paned windows are very easy to convert to bulletproof glass (he has a previous owner to thank)

The idea was that you should recognize a Gentleman by the fact, that his way of speaking does not show where he grew up but only where he was educated. Speaking RP was mandatory at the BBC. It is a rather recent development, that people who speak natural, local dialects work as presenters in the BBC. When Clarkson started Top Gear (I think it was in the 80s with "old" Top Gear), he had to speak RP. in the 2000s and 2010s he became so famous and popular that he simply said: "What the hell" and his natural dialect started to push RP aside.

I used to be a BMW only guy, but next time I'm in the marketplace, I'll be looking at a lot wider range of models. I'm a big fan of the higher end 190Es (the Evos, really) and have always thought I'd go for an E-class if I picked one up. And as far as Lexus is concerned ... imitation is certainly the sincerest form of flattery :-)

Such a great car. The S Class W140(with whatever engine you want) was packed with technology that we nowadays take for granted in cars(e.g. the rear parking sensors). Sadly, that was from a time when Mercedes were making their cars properly - those old W140s were built like tanks, they were built to last - you could easily do 300,000 miles before an engine rebuild. The newer versions of the S Class - I've heard so many horror stories about some of the electrics(and the prices for fixing them) - and then there's some problems with certain engines or the air suspension systems in newer models.

Pricess Diana died because she wasn't wearing her seatbelt. I don't care how safe the car is, if you are not buckled in when the car hits an object, you will collide with the inside of the car at the speed it was traveling upon impact. I think the one she was in was a 320 or 300SEL, with the much less powerful inline 6.

Oh, completely! I have little hesitation when something goes wrong with my current 1990 325is. The '87 is a bit more on the retired side, but I feel the same way about both. Most people don't understand it, and I think that's sad. Something about older cars does inspire that more for a lot of people, I think. I was really just imagining someone picking one up without that expectation and what a pile it could become if it became neglected. A friend of mine had an old 300DL ... *nothing* worked.

Not wrong & yes it might cost a bit but with a Merc there is a special connection between the owner & car itself ,4 example on my S500 the ac control unit broke,a new one costs aprox $700 , without hesitation I installed a new one meanwhile in one of my utes the heater control stopt ,aprox $200 ,I never replaced that yet ,that was about 6 month ago . A Merc is like a 2nd wife girlfriend ,if you look after it,it will reward you on the road, specially an S class MB. Did this make any sense to you?

It's even crazier than that. 1 GBP was about 1.7 USD back in 1991. That means this car was $144,500 in 1991 dollars. Factor in inflation and you were looking at a $276,000 car. That's Bentley and baby Rolls territory. A 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S650 is only $205,000 loaded.

@@jeffy210 Conversion actually matches actual price in USA w/luxury tax from October 1991 launch. W126 buyers ended up either jumping ship, downgrading to W124, or making the jump. W140 became the car for oligarchs and entertainers, due to the extreme expense.
