Old school King Tiger camo painting and color detailing tutorial, Meng TS-031, 1/35 scale

It's time to make some German ambush camouflage painting and color detailing tutorial! I'm going to paint the hard edge camo used in late stages of WW2. So, I'll show you how to paint camo using old school technique, that is with the brush.
The Konigstiger (Meng TS-031, 1/35 scale) is prepared for operation Frühlingserwachen diorama so there will be much more!!

I had as much fun watching this as I'd have painting the tank myself :) Interesting point about spare tracks weathering. It seems like lot of modelers do not realize what tanks were made of. Let alone the tracks, but the tank body made of panzer steel or wealds containing nickel - they all are very resistant to corrosion and it takes years of being abandoned in the woods to get so rusty as you can observe in case of many today's models. They are supposed to portray a vehicle that's been in action just few weeks or months, but they are overloaded with all the rusty effects . It seems like giving too much (rust) weathering products to some guys is like giving a razor blade to a child.

You hit the point. This is exactly why I limit the effects of rust on my models because it is not natural and realistic. Of course, here and there to add a little color, but without exaggeration. WHAT you wrote is 100% true and I agree. :)

That, my friend is a STUNNING paint job, almost a shame you are going to put a winter wash over it! I like your weathering, subtlety is definitely the way to go here! Way too many modellers weather tanks to the point they look like they’ve been sitting rusting in a scrapyard for years. Some fail to remember that crews did maintain their vehicles and also, due to the nature of war, many tanks didn’t live long enough to get weathered!

An info about minute 27:35 - in addition to the further marking with cross bars, tactical symbol of the unit and symbol of the division, a capital letter (e.g. G for Guderian, K for Kleist) was often used to identify tank groups. The G thus stands for the Panzer Group Guderian. Now I'm watching your next video! Cheers, John

I tend to find that metal on tracks in active service (eg the ones driving the tank) have little to no corrosion, whereas spare tracks or tracks on vehicles in museums or so have corrosion. The only notable acceptation is the Leopard 1-2 series’ track connectors Hope this helps :)

The tracks on the turret on KT’s and Tiger I’s were brand new tracks never used so would be black from the factory. They do rust up over time but seriously it’s war and these vehicles didn’t last years 😳😳😳 so… plus… you bought your model, detailed it with your bits n pieces, painted it with YOUR paint so you “should” be allowed to paint it in any way you like… bright pink with blue dots if you want 😉🤣😂 seriously people pay far to much attention to what others have to say. Me, I build my models my way, it’s probably wrong in many peoples eyes but it works for me so… opinions are like arse holes… EVERYONE has one but some will be louder than others 🤣🤣🤣 for me personally I love your videos. Unfortunately I’m not in a position at the moment to be a patron 😔😔😔 but hopefully soon I will be able to help 🙏🤞👍 your accent helps as well… very… sinister your voice… like don’t mess with me or I’ll make you disappear 😂😂😂 no disrespect to you here either it’s just my imagination is… a bit weird 🤪😅🤣😂 anyway thank you for all your wonderful work. Truly inspirational, informative and useful. I’m pleased you don’t edit out your mistakes and show us to to rectify them that to me is invaluable 😂😂😂 as I’m always messing something up… stupid old fart I am 😉😉😉 thank you again for your wonderful and refreshing videos you truly are making this hobby better my friend 🙏🙏🙏🤓😎🤩😍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I was learning about this very subject last week and from what I can gather fresh tracks straight from the factory to the front lines had a very thick black paint on them and it was extremely weather resistant whilst on the side of the turrets. It was a punishable offence to put worn tracks on the track hangers, on the rest of the hull it was ok to hang used but still usable tracks that’s why they are normally in lengths🤓🤓🤓 I think it was us modellers that started the fad of having rusty tracks, chipping and rusty streaks everywhere 🥴🥴🥴 I have a wonderful photograph of a Pnzr column in a shallow stream and most of the tanks where in it getting a good wash down. In this picture you can see the German crews using stiff brooms, mops and buckets. Knowing how obsessive the German’s are about keeping there vehicles clean and serviceable I sincerely doubt many of there vehicles would be left to basically rust away like that and any battle damage would be painted over the first chance the crew had. Anyway I hope this clears up a few things for you 🙏🙏🙏 probably not what you want to hear as clean pristine vehicles look rather boring to the average Joe 🤪😂😂 it’s all about “artistic license” and YOUR imagination 🤓😎🤩 at the end of the day if YOU are happy then that’s all that truly matters 😍😍😍👍👍👍👍👍👍

@@TheGrumpyOldModeller What you wrote has been known to me for a long time. A real vehicle and a model are two different things. If I were to make a real vehicle, dusty and dirty as the model actually was, it would have nothing to offer the viewer except a collection of dust. That's why I paint my models and weather them so that they attract the eye. I know that this way I'm cheating a bit with the effects I use, but if I have to choose, I prefer an interesting miniature rather than a super realistic one. I think this is where the painting of spare tracks with a lot of rust, etc., came from. Personally, I don't like it and for some time now I have definitely reduced the amount of rust on my models. Exactly for the reasons you write about in your earlier comment. To sum up - a tank is a tank, a model is a model, and our eye wants to have the joy of looking at contrasts because they stimulate the brain to work :)

How did you remove the grease on the surface ? I saw you APPLY a grease thinner, but I did not see you REMOVE the thinned grease. After applying a thick layer of remover, you must somehow wipe off the liquid. If you don't, you will only dilute the grease and spread it out, all over the model. It has become a thinner layer. You did not remove it. At all.
