Old Photographs Of Dunfermline Scotland
Tour Scotland video of old photographs of Dunfermline in Fife. The town was first recorded in the 11th century, with the marriage of Malcolm III, King of Scotland, and Saint Margaret at the church in Dunfermline. As his Queen consort, Margaret established a new church dedicated to the Holy Trinity, which evolved into an Abbey under their son, David I in 1128.

How nice was that. I was brought up in Dunfermline in the 40 50 and 60s One of the photos is of a small house on a corner with five or so children standing by the window This is the birth place of Andrew Carnegie the Scottish-American industrialist, business magnate, and philanthropist. Carnegie led the American steel industry in the late 19th century and is often identified as one of the richest people in history. He built the Carnegie Hall in New York plus one of the same name in Dunfermline He left a small fortune to Dunfermline when he died in 1919 at the age of 83 The town is very proud of him and eternally grateful

My mother was born here in 1946, then migrated to Australia with her family, made up of five older brothers. My grandparents were set to return to Scotland because they were lied to by the Australian government. They were promised more than what they got and stayed in various hostels between states. Sadly, their money was stolen so they could not return. My mother returned to Dunfermile recently and found the little sandstone cottage she grew up in. It had not changed in appearance, which was good. I never fully appreciated the history of Dunfermline, until recently..

It took three decades for you to be brought up in Dunfermline! 40’s 50’s and 60’s. Hmmmmm.
From near Dunfermline, I am quite young and it is interesting to see how fast the town, now a city has evolved!

Thanks. I've been trying to track this kind of thing down. I was in town exactly a year ago, but I was so busy trying to sort out my visa (I work abroad) I had no time to go through the records in the lovely library. CYOP!!!

Aye that’s a bank at the left now eh
The shop fronts may change...but the streets don't...and there's more houses now and less green spaces than back then. Seems to be the rule for most of the streets and towns nowadays compared to back then.
