Old PC Gaming Joystick Review | Best 90s PC Joystick | Thrustmaster, Logitech, Saitek

Ойындар

What's the best retro 90s joystick for your old retro gaming PC? I made a list of gaming joysticks from the 90s and I bought all six!
How do you determine the best gaming joystick for an old 90s retro PC? I’m looking at four factors: Looks, Feels, Function and Value for money.
I’m looking for a gaming joystick, not a full HOTAS setup. Secondly, these old retro 90s joysticks are gameport joysticks, not USB. This means they’ll work far better in both DOS and Windows and should be a lot easier to install on my Windows 98 gaming PC.
Going to head to head we have the Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro, the Logitech Wingman, the ThrustMaster Top Gun, the Gravis Blackhawk and the Saitek Cyborg 2000. We have a last-minute new challenger in the guise of the CH Gamestick, which I won on eBay for 83p delivered!
First up is the Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro. Microsoft have always made good gaming hardware and the Sidewinder PC peripherals from the 90s are amongst the best.
Next we’re looking at the Logitech Wingman Extreme. The Wingman is probably one of the most iconic items from the entire 90s. Nearly all PC gamers had a Wingman in one form or another.
Number three is the Thrustmaster Top Gun. This officially-licensed joystick was released some ten years after its namesake, but comes from arguably the biggest name in simulation gaming.
Fourth on the list is the Gravis Blackhawk. Gravis are well-known for their line of sound cards, gameport cards and PC gaming peripherals and the Blackhawk is well-known to flight sim aficionados.
The most contemporary joystick on this list, the Saitek Cyborg 2000 was released in - you guessed it - the year 1999. Saitek have been making PC peripherals forever and the Cyborg is something to behold.
Last but by no means least, our last-minute entry, the CH Gamestick. CH are famous for being one of the first manufacturers out of the gate making joysticks and some of the real vintage sticks are immensely expensive. The Gamestick though was intended to be a budget stick for all-comers.

    I own the Saitek Cyborg 3D USB II since 2001. An awesome joy in my opinion. Still in a good condition. Can be rearranged for lefties and palm height as well.Cost me 40 USD back then. That's nearly identical to the Saitek Cyborg 2000. I didn't even know anything about joys actually. My colleague told me I should by Cyborg. Told him I had never heard about it. "What?! You don't know Cyborg?!" then I, in Obi-Wan style: "Should I have?" then he's like "They make the best joys on planet Earth!!". So I bought into it and never looked back. Very good joy indeed.

    I think it's overrated. It is solid and has some high tech appeal with it's infrared sensor (nice Darth Vader effect of centering into your hand when it approaches the sensor) and electromagnets instead of springs, but I always flew better and more competitive with my Saitek Cyborg, even when that was worn out quite a bit.

    Agreed. I've had mine since 2005 or so. Just unbelievable how robust it is. Thousands of hours in FS 2002, 2004, FSX. All Battlefield series aircrafts since BF Desert combat, up to BF3... It's simply the best joystick I've ever owned or used. All other controllers I've ever had are disposable plastic trash compared to it.

    @@NuntiusLegis the issue is, the FFB 2 receives signals from DirectInput making it compatible with an astounding number of games. There's a DIY FFB yoke that captures telemetry data and in-game yoke position but it only works with two flight sims. If you want the feel of the stick tension you need to get into the world of gimbals that have cam profiles to change the leverage of the spring as you pull, which are expensive as hell and have no actual FFB. The Sidewinder FFB is not about having the most competitive stick. In terms of button layout and quantity it flat out sucks compared to modern sticks. It's about feeling the air pressure on the control surfaces, it's about the correct trim function flying helicopters. It's an electronic love letter to aviation that sadly has been out of production for almost 20 years. And for that reason, it deserves the title of best stick ever.

    Hey, I see that you still stream and are active, just wanted to post some rivet counter junk in here. The Thrustmaster Top Gun stick is actually not the same stick as used in the F-14, it's based off of the B-8 grip, which was used in a variety of fighters. It's actually still a great piece of kit for those who want to build a simpit for something like the DCS F-86 Sabre, without having to pour money out like water onto sand. It's actually functionally almost identical, which is great!

    For "the best" 90's Joystick would be the Thrustmaster HOTAS setup of the F-16 FLCS/F-22 Pro, F-16 TQS, and Elite peddals. The CH Products of the Combat Stick with their throttle and pedals were a slight step down, but nothing else got anywhere close...

    The Top Gun joystick is not the one you want, it was cheaply made. If you want that stick go with the higher quality version, Thrustmaster Mark II. And you went through naming all of these sticks but you didn't mention the Thrustmaster FLCS? F16 replica with fully programmable buttons before that was a common thing, it's a fantastic stick. Props for mentioning the Wingman though, that was one hell of a stick.

    If we see this video doing well, I will certainly follow up with focus on the joystick families. I own a 3D Pro and a Precision Pro - neither one of them works out of the box with Win98 though. The drivers are present as you say, but Windows 98 has a bug where it fails to detect Sidewinder products if the CPU features >100mhz Frontside Bus. It's a known error, which Microsoft even acknowledged in the day, but never patched. There are enthusiast-made patches, which I can confirm work. The fact remains, it's not an out-of-the-box install for many users.

    I never had that problem with my ffb pro, I used an Compaq evo d 500 as my retro pc, it had a p4 and 133mhz ram. I did install the sidewinder software for profile support. No longer have the computer but still have the stick.

  • @MattyStoked

    @MattyStoked

    9 жыл бұрын

    Yeah it's a kinda shitty problem - some people get it, others don't. The FFB series came slightly later, so may well work better with the newer raft of Intel CPUs. Included software may have helped too. The most fun part about running a retro PC is the complete lack of information out there. The internet didn't really exist in 1998, so trying to find P2 build guides is a lot harder than trying to find one for a Z97 i7 build (for instance)! :-D

    I would expect them to be comparable to their older models, but with a USB connection. Analogue input is not something you see much of these days. Shame they're expensive. Still, a cheap old gameport joystick and a rockfire adapter has seen me well for years now.

  • @det.bullock4461

    @det.bullock4461

    Yeah, the flightstick Pro in particular is very costly for what it offers nowadays (yeah, it's more solid/reliable than any other 4-button 1-hat stick but it's still just that apart from being ambidextrous). The combatstick is the one I ended up buying two years ago and it's the first joystick I ever had that has that many buttons and all on the handle, and at least on Amazon.it costed just ten Euros more than the Flightstick Pro (weird how the import price of the two is almost identical) but much less than the Fighterstick. It's a pity I didn't think of buying one earlier when my Saitek ST200 started giving me problems five years ago or so, they were much more affordable back then but I didn't even know they still existed, I remember seeing them in magazines in the 90s.

If you've got an older PC with emulators on, a joystick is a standard input device so should work with anything. @@MattyStoked It's an old one. Pentium 233MMX with a Voodoo 1and an Awe64 running Windows 98. I got this to play Rogue Squadron 3D mostly but I want to try some other old flight sims too. The controller was, of course, used and didn't come with the driver disk. I searched for a good few hours for a disc image or drivers/software but I found nothing for this particular joystick.

    Wait... the Thrustmaster gets a minus for only having three buttons, a trigger and a POV... but the Cyborg gets a plus for having three buttons, a trigger and a POV? Also, CH Flightstick or CH Combatstick beats them all.

    USB to Game Port Adapter by RockFire, will this work with the old MS Wingman Force Feedback, does anyone know?

  • @MattyStoked

    @MattyStoked

    8 жыл бұрын

    The MS Force Feedback sticks came with their own GamePort to USB adapters (the later iterations anyway, like the FF Pro). The problem with these sticks is that MS didn't future-proof them, so they start to act up when interacting with newer CPUs.

    The Top Gun is an entry level joystick, flight system sticks were better quality. There are also better CH Sticks to look at. MS-DOS support is also worth looking into for gamers interested in retro PC Gaming. Some sticks won't work in dos at all. I like the video overall.

    Tomb Raider had the crappiest controls, so I don't think anything could make it worse! But as OG tomb raider used directional keys rather than a rotating camera, it would be like-for-like with a joystick, no? Happy to be wrong, but I think a joystick would be the same or better.

    Ugh. This list sucks. Personally I wouldn't buy a CH anything if you threw it in my hands and paid me to get it out of your sight. Ugly, overpriced, clunky junk. I had the Saitek Cyborg. Another piece of junk that went back to best buy after a week. As for the Microsoft stuff, it was also overpriced. Still have my Logitech Wingman Attack, the gameport version. At the time, all I wanted was throttle control for F22ADF and a couple others. Unfortunately the Windows joystick setup blows... the center always jiggles. I ended up with a couple of games that relied on that crap. Couldn't fly for beans because I couldn't even trim out the centering error. Anyways, back to topic... Seriously, no mention of the Suncom F-15E series? Or the Thrustmaster HOTAS? How's about the Saitek X36 (before USB and before Mad Catz took them over)? I had the X36... didn't really use it much because it took up so much space on a small desk and we didn't have a decent PC at the time.
