One of the reasons this song is so good is everyone sees themselves in it. we all have the inner demons we all feel imposters and this puts it front and centre.. This is a work of art and public mental health film. Everyone needs to see this

One of my first thoughts was "holy crap I need to show this to my therapist". At our next session I told her, "I realize I only have you for 1 hour every two weeks, but its still worth the 9 minutes, I need you to watch something". It has legitimately helped me.

I LOVE the way this song is constructed. It goes from a guy arguing with his own self doubt into his inner demons and conscience competing for his attention, and by the end his angels and demons are literally fighting with each other for his soul. Sooooooo good, i choke up every time he stands up out of his chair.

I don't think so . Notice that "Quiet Ren" starts looking to where "Manic Ren" was, then faces the camera, looking outwards (ref ...."then I got older and I relaxed" and the dance got easier" in the monologue) When he stands, he symbolises that he understands that the demons won't beat him. He's emerging. Hence the line "Cower at the man I've become, as I sing at the top of my lungs..." He's saying it WON'T beat him. Leading into the dance as he vocalises his various personalities, but it's a celebration of recognising them as part of the whole, part of who he is. Almost "know your enemy" . The monologue is a summary of the various sections of the song. . The most chilling thing is the very last moment before the video goes to black. That look at the camera.... Says to me "I know they're still in me" . (.....In my opinion)

Please do Ren x Chinchilla Chalk Outlines so beautiful and there is a trilogy called The Tale of Jenny and Screech full version! He is a singer, storyteller, plays guitar unbelievably, he plays bass, piano, he raps so good, he pulls you in so much!! He is in Canada getting treatment for Limes disease that was misdiagnosed so they are trying treatments to get him back to as normal as they can. He was only supposed to be there for 3 months now it’s 6 months. It’s a challenge because he misses his family and friends!! Ren is a genus I can’t wait for you to see more!! I have Lupus which is autoimmune and I totally understand I live in pain everyday. It’s attacked my organs pretty bad. I have had it for 23 years I know what it’s doing. Ren has helped me so much and I have NEVER seen an artist like he is and bonus the more I watch his videos the more beautiful he gets♥️ his heart is just beautiful! Brother, you ARE good enough! This has transcended being a song. I can't quite replicate it, but I saw a comment elsewhere that said it well. It was something to the effect of: this is no longer a song. This is when a heart explodes and leaves behind art. We all have demons. Was it Baudelaire who said the devil's greatest trick was convincing humanity that he didn't exist? It's OK to not be OK. This should be required viewing in high school health classes.

I had a teacher in high school in my automotive class that taught me the most important thing I've ever learned in my life. He told me to stop trying to attack a problem head on. That problem won't go away with force. Take a few steps back, assess the problem, come up with a solution, and then take it on at your own speed. I've followed that advice with everything I've ever encountered since and I'm very happy with how my life has gone so far. Life isn't about taking everything head on and breaking your back trying to solve it. Rushing through life isn't worth the hassle.

Being so young still (21, almost 22) and having struggled with my mental health for so long.... man. As much as it pains me that you have struggled for so long with self-esteem issues and what sounds like anxiety and depression at times, it gives me so much hope that someone as time-wise as you is still here, still making the world a kinder, more connected place. I can be here too when I'm your age. I can. You didn't let the mean voice that lives inside all of us win. Neither will I. Thank you, sir.

I'm 40, I'm still here. Struggling for so long. I realized some time ago what Ren is saying at the end - it's an eternal struggle, it makes us humans, everyone has it in some ways. There are victims, there are students. The last two years three different coworkers told me they probably wouldn't be here without me. I'm working behind a bar, there's always people with depression, anxietys, getting to work there. It's not a hard job per se, but it can give you a lot because you work with and for people. Realizing the eternal struggle and learning to relax and suffer is the thing that get's you through it. Until you're 40, 60, 80, 100. And you'll be able to help people, because you've went through it, realize it's happening. And.. I personally must say that I feel that it's worth it. Worth the struggle, the darkness, the hopelessness. We're still here. And we'll be for quite a while. And Rens piece of art will help so many who are not yet at the point where he is.

@@waschkarte3989 If I may, I am selfish enough to think I can add something to this. It is a lesson I keep learning. Because there are times, when every realisation gone by sounds fake and empty. The shadows of the eternal dance keep surprising me with the extent of the darkness. And if it one day breaks me, I know that it wasn't a loss. Just the end of a victory streak. For I ended up winning many days that I'd forgone.

I’m amazed that I’ve seen kids through 90+ people loving this message. While he is in Calgary, Alberta getting treatments to have a better life, i actually sit here worrying about this skilled and talented young man. I’ve watched many reaction videos of his, and Tom Brady was believed to be the GOAT of man crushes, but I think Ren is the GOAT of hope for so many trying to break into this business and people needing a message of the possible. I love his music and talent and worry about his future like a parent would his or her child. He is a modern day treasure that crosses all genres and became a modern day Bard. Try Chalk Outline by Ren X Chinchilla as soon as you can. I cried by the second line. He’s even made me a fan of rap lol. My spouse thinks I’m nuts now.

Do all three parts in one one sitting, and do them in order--Jenny, Screech, Violet. It will be one of the best songs/performances you'll ever hear in your life, and like this one, each section is done in one take, live--you did realize this was live right? Anyway, welcome to the Ren rabbit hole, it goes deep.

“Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” His performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”) are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” "War Pigs," "Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. Ren recently released his single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. As mentioned above, his latest release, “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” is another masterful work.

this is why he made this song. I personally can’t relate but somehow I sure as hell empathize now. And it’s from seeing how common and deep that struggle is, and what he brings out in folks like he and you in terms of release, relation and healing in little ways. He wrote it to give him peace and make him stronger. And that’s what watching it is for. It’s an immense gift I’ve come to realize. It’s like Black and Proud by James Brown or Respect. I haven't felt as much love for a new artist in my whole life as I have Ren. This is just him, alone, no band back up. He is everything. I could have a thousand people tell me I am the best painter since Picasso but I’d listen to the one that told me I was hopeless, much of the time that one person is me. This song has become my therapy, if someone has the bravery, honesty and belief to release something to the world that lays their soul and struggles bare to anyone that cares to listen, I can conquer my demons and do the same. Awesome reaction as always Salty!!! I’m so happy you reacted to this. REN’s been blowing up everywhere since this came out and I’m so happy for him. A little bit of background on REN, when he was younger (can’t remember the exact age but I wanna say early teens) he contracted lyme disease from a tick bite. He had just been signed to Sony Records after a talent scout noticed him busking, and was part of the way through recording his first album when the unchecked disease hit him full force. He spent the next 10 years being misdiagnosed as having everything from bi-polar disorder to straight up psychosis. Dude spent 10 years being prescribed all kinds of different mental health meds that just made everything worse. I have some experience with that myself…I have AADHD, major depression, suicidal deations and generalized anxiety. The ideations have been a constant for over 20 years now. I didn’t get any kind of treatment until well into adulthood (yay familial mental health stigmas lol) and once I did, I had a hell of a time finding meds that worked for me. Had some really dark times learning what worked and what hindered. I’m very fortunate in that I was able to find a combination of meds that made life livable…a lot of people aren’t so lucky. I can’t imagine a decade of that…the dude deserves every accolade he gets and I’m so happy for him! Hope all is well down in your neck of the woods Salty! Cheers

I have that struggle every single day. Something as simple as waking up and moving takes an hour. That is why I adore artists that inspire me to push through pain and dizziness that would be so easy to give up on myself. I am in the eye of the storm fighting everything that comes hurling out at me. I do not have strength more than what He provides, but it is sufficient when I interact with others. Looking forward to more Ren

I think this is the most profound piece of art i have ever seen. REN's ability to lyrically and visually depict emotion is out of this world. This ain't just a performance, it is an amalgamation and manifestation of the eternal battle between the light and dark parts of the human psyche. He didn't just "act" the 3 parts in this piece, he actually embody them because he has not only seen hell, he has lived it. If you know his backstory, the part where he stands up here it's so hard.

  • @gregquinn5474

The point he makes in the final "dark" voice is that self doubt and fear are "eternal/immortal", born into, part and parcel, un-vanquishable. We can deny them additional power but they will always remain.

Yeah I'm glad you gave him a 10 other wise I would have to smack you 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I honestly think that Ren is the Picasso of music. Sick Boi is really good, and when you do Jenny and Screech do the full story I believe it's like close to 15-minute video or something but it has all three stories in order. He calls what he does bardcore and he was/is a busker. You have to check out Chalk Outlines featuring Chinchilla her voice will absolutely blow you away. She doesn't have a whole lot of music up but she's definitely worth checking out also. And her style is just glorious 😎😎😎😎

I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to Ren! I just discovered him myself a couple of weeks ago, and he has an impressive back catalog of songs that you will also like. Might I suggest, like others, the trilogy Tale of Jenny and Screech (and Violet) Full version, which has all three videos together in one? You'll get more Satriani vibes, as well as experiencing what Ren calls "bardcore," which is my new favorite genre. It's also straight up Shakespearean tragedy of the finest. And then, as a fellow musician myself, I really felt your pain at the self-doubt that tells us we suck, in spite of accolades and accomplishments. Like you said, you were good enough with guitar to get on TV, yet that didn't translate into not doubting yourself. When you noticed the classical guitar and the nylon strings, I thought "He probably played guitar." And yep! Anyway, this was my first exposure to you but will not be the last; keep up the good work!

Hi, I pushed heavily for you to react to this one and it's great to see. Thank you for considering it. It helps Ren out as he's going through a rough time. If there's any Ren videos that you follow this one up with, I cannot recommend "Ren - Jenny's Tale (full version)" enough. It's another long video, with 3 parts and most of his stuff is recorded live as he's recording the video, in a single-take. If you enjoy Jenny's Tale, please also check out some stuff from guys band The Big Push, like their cover of Bongo Bong, another one-take. Ren does all sorts of music, including a lot of rap videos so there's a lot of variety to react to.

So sooo many times, and it hits harder every time 😔 This is art of transcendent beauty and an *important* song. Artists often struggle with imposter syndrome. There’s a movie starring Olivia Munn called “Violet” that rings of this and was a transformative experience for me… just as this song also resonates. As a person who’s never been able to escape imposter syndrome and negative self-talk, *realizing* that you can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that you *know* you have-is sooo important. It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it. *Know* that I believe in you… but you don’t need me to-just like you don’t need the shroud of doubt that feels first of protection and then as a prison. You are *stronger* than that voice. You are stronger than you can *possibly* know… until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.

Fellow IT geezer here and on again off again guitar player. This young man is hopefully going to go places. There are a lot of people who need to hear what he has to say. On the “victims and students” line in his monologue… my take on that was that there are those who succumb to the psychosis and allow themselves to become victims to it. The students are those, who like Ren, recognize and learn how to overcome their inner demons… learn to relax. I agree with your perspective as well, learning how to look at yourself and figure out what you’re doing. I believe that’s the way you meant it. Anyway, I enjoyed the video. Great points you made and it’s always a little cathartic to know you’re not the only one dealing with things. Take care.

That guy at the start in the pig mask is Blizzpig (Sean Livesey) from the band Evil Blizzard. IF you do a reaction to anything from that band you will see him there. He and Ren are friends. This was also done in ONE take (though 4 attempts.) Ren is Welsh, born on Anglesey in 1990. He was misdiagnosed with mental health and was treated with anti-psychotic drugs for that, For 7 years. Until he was correctly diagnosed ib Belgium with Lyme disease - but by then the damage had been done. He is now in Canada receiving treatment to try and undo that damage caused.
