I only discovered salty this evening after recently going down the bo rabbit hole myself and he's already my favourite KZreadrs for that resason
"this kid needs a hug" I think you might have got the entire Point of Bo Burnham in a single sentence
The absolute dichotomy in these two views of the line "You say the ocean's rising, like I give a shit" is so interesting to me. And so tragic. It's funny and relatable on first listen--it's not going to make a difference in a day of your life, as you said. But when you stop to think about it... _Bo_ is only thirty here. If he lives it fully, he's got well over half his life ahead of him. The climate's being torn apart and it'll only compound as time goes on. It _will_ make a significant difference throughout his lifetime. He's not apathetic because it doesn't affect him. He's apathetic because he knows it's coming and there's nothing he can do to stop it. It's not a line about being unaffected, it's a line of complete resignation to something that undoubtedly _will_ hurt him. "You're not gonna slow it, heaven knows you tried... Got it? Good, now _get inside."_ Those lines give me chills every time, man. I second getting this kid a hug.
My heart broke for him watching the Inside special. You're literally watching him slowly breakdown over the course of recording it. You mentioned dichotomy. The true dichotomy was him tired of working on the project but being afraid to finish because then his hands would be idle again. Great reaction.
I've watched a dozen reactions to this song and yours is the most resonant. Empathy is everything.

Appreciate you being here. Thank you so much.
I love that you saw the context even if you haven’t seen the whole thing. The idea runs through the whole show that he was somewhere good and the pandemic tore him back down and this is the moment where he finally verbalises that. His anguished manic laughing at the end breaks my heart but damn it’s relatable

Bo rarely does something so simple as a song about himself. Theres always another meaning. What grabbed me was the 'get the f up!' bit. As someone who gets used as a free shrink way too often, i've learned this about depression. You can be nice and supportive for a few days. You *have to be,* even, for the medicine to work. And that pill is anger and shock. You aren't looking to insult the person. You're looking to absolutely piss them off. Trigger some primal emotion. Trip the fight-or-flight. And i'm sure everyone watching that segment felt a hint of that. That energy is what breaks through depression. Hard to be mopey when you're angry. Depression is like a gas, smothering you with every breath. And anger is a spark to ignite it. If you survive the explosion, you can explain why you pissed them off. Now, this doesn't *cure* depression. The gas is gonna build up again. But if you don't mind making someone livid every once in a while, you can effectively treat it. So if you're ever feeling down, just take a blowtorch to your bullshit. I involuntarily tested this method on myself. So I know it works wonders. I was down about being dumped, had been for weeks, and went on a hike. And while I was taking a break, a mountain lion just casually walks by, suddenly sees me, and freezes. Mario's head couldn't smash the number of bricks I shit in that moment. Instant thought clarity. He doesn't look agressive, just scared. So move slow. Get the sandwich out of your pocket. Take a few bites, so he knows its *your* food. Toss him the rest. Leave while he eats. And my plan worked. Right up until i tossed the now curious cat the sandwich. He was done with it before I could even turn around. And he was coming towards me. He sniffed at my leg, then butted his head into it a couple times. Then he walked off. When I could move again, I jelly-legged myself home to get clean pants, and can honestly say that the number of f's I gave about my ex couldn't be described by any known mathematical term.

Nah, Bo was strong liberal / democrat leaning before covid, this song tells me he understands both sides are complete dog shi, and this whole ruse is almost over. "You say the oceans rising like I give a shit. You say the whole worlds ended, buddy it already did". He is trying to wake people up to this realization.
@Oatmilllk

@@RejectOneWorldGov Nah, it means he has darker things on his mind, and his own mental health is so bad that he doesn't even want to think about all the things happening to the planet on top of all this to make him feel even worse. He is liberal. Both sides can enjoy his songs/comedy, though; it doesn't have to be one or the other for comedy
“In the beginning he said he got better, this boys still hurting” 😢
when I was 17 years old and showing my friends and family bo burnhams funny song about how his whole family thinks he's gay, i had no idea that 14 years later i'd be crying over and over to many of his pieces of art. I know bo is expressing himself, but it feels like much more than that, bo is expressing the feelings of millions of us millenials who deal with this need for attention and the self hate that it causes. Bo's music is a truer representation of things that I have felt than anything I would be able to do to convey them.
@MoonlightCircus

I feel like if I had to pick one artist that really embodies what it is to be a millennial (like if we were sending a delegate to a hypothetical Generational Music Summit or whatever), I'd pick Bo. He nails something essential, song after song after song. Not that other generations don't resonate with his music, but he's quintessentially of our generation. My partner is Gen X, and his reaction was similar to Salty's: "Oh my goodness, he's hurting. Please give him a hug." And meanwhile I'm just sitting there like, "Me too, Bo. Me too."
I've watched a bunch of your reactions this morning and I don't believe I've seen a more empathetic reaction to Bo's performances. The world needs more people like you, sir.
I watched the special when it first came out, and I've seen the video probably 50+ times at this point, but in the end where he pops the camera up and shows that he's been playing his heart out to an empty room still gets to me. Fighting mental illness is HARD, and to put in half a decade of work only to have it just annihilated by forces outside of your control has to be beyond devastating. To me, the entire special reads as a man holding on to the progress he's made with his fingernails as a flood tries to tear it away, and you can tell that by the end that he can feel it going despite his best efforts. I've been in a similar headspace, and it's brutal. You're angry, depressed and panicked BECAUSE you're angry, depressed and panicked and you thought that you had mostly beaten it, and it just compounds itself. The feeling of, "oh, fuck, I don't want to have to do this again," is almost as bad as the actual disease.
The first time I watched "Inside" and I got to the part where he yells "Come on, get the FUCK UP!" I actually jumped in my seat a little, feeling for a moment like I was being attacked, which I think (or at least I hope) was his intention. He'd lulled me into an almost hypnotic state with his almost robotic harmonies that just tear at your heart, and then suddenly the façade is dropped, the anger comes through, and he just about assaults the camera before swinging it around as he finishes the song.
@sindri1447

And his maniacal laugh because he's still having panic attacks and then the sudden stop. Hits different man.
I met him 8 years ago when I worked at a theatre he did a gig at, nicest guy ever, always hyper and friendly, and a fantastic hugger. I hope he's doing alright.
The crowd sounds are soundbites; he's all alone in his room recording this during the pandemic. Its genius, watching the special in order really explains it, and you watch his hair and beard grow throughout it. Highly recommend
Salty there's no audience he's completely alone in his room the effects he does are so good

This one haunted me when I saw it the first time. I've lived with anxiety and other issues since I was 9 or 10, and just the moments where the camera is so uncomfortably close and being to told to look in his eye was like a visceral example of what anxiety feels like for me (not to mention the lyrics about being told to worry about the world when your own microcosm hasn't been stable for ages). It's just amazing how Bo can touch on so many deeply personal feelings that can vary wildly even among people with the same issues
This song is such a mindopener and you are such a treat. if everybody could have someone like you in their life i think that the world would be a lot better

Oh my ... Not for a moment would I think my advice would ever be of genuine worth. Nothing beyond a fleeting entertainment at best.
Damn,Salty...Im glad it effected you .I was wondering if I was the only one who couldnt breathe because of the tears. Im almost 70 years old. Retired Marine... been shot 5 times...still here. Married...divorced less than a year later. Mom died 3 days after my birthday of Alzheimers. Dad pined himself to his grave iver missing mom a year and a half later,54 minutes before his 80th birthday. I lost my sister,my best friend to full body cancer. Im a veteran of 5 different motorcycle clubs,one having been a 1%er club.Retired from riding due to severe vertigo. Life has been a bitch. But I keep struggling to stand up. THIS SONG,Iheard today for the first time. I cried a river.And like Ive hinted here,Im not a pu$$y. Ive been thru a lot. But to hear his pleading for help from anyone,sny place,tore me apart. We need to get back our humanity. We are humans. We are capable of love and compassion that can be so deep that it can build you...or destroy you. We need to embrace our humanity,..our feelings,and get back to a spiritual level of caring for one another. Glad you were able to express how this song got to you brother. Hey Salty! Excellent reaction, as always. This song is so much more impactful within the context of the Inside special. The special follows him through the initial coronavirus quarantine from being full of energy, ready to perform and create to being broken by having been alone with his thoughts for so long. The entirety of the piece is brilliant and meticulously curated by Bo. I understand taking it piecemeal for reactions but please, please, please, some day when you have some time, watch the whole thing from beginning to end to truly appreciate Bo's vision for the special. Love ya, Salty. Keep on keepin' on. ❤️
Great reaction here. I love this song because it feels so real and raw. You mentioned a couple times that he's obviously still struggling. Dealing with depression and mental health issues is a constant battle. People say that an addict is always an addict, the fight is controlling it; Mental health is the same way. He got better, enough so that he felt comfortable performing again. That's not him saying he's over it, or that he's not struggling, just that he's in better control of it. Also from a personal perspective; the line about the world ending. I'm a 30 year old man, the apocalypse has been ongoing for basically my whole life. One end after another, no stopping. Y2K, war, nuclear weapon threats, 6-6-06, 2012; The US has been at war for 20 years, also without any break. There have been so many supposed "end of the world" promises, that doesn't mean much to us anymore. Now scientists are saying the point of no return from ruining our planet is imminent (Bo references this in "That Funny Feeling"). Honestly, we've got bigger things to worry about than yet another apocalypse scare.
The special is one of the most artistic masterpieces I have ever seen. One of the best things I have seen in a very, very long time. I highly recommend watching it.
Everyone has their own interpretation of what the end of the song "means." Personally, I see it as him simulating a panic attack and him shaking the camera says "you're on this ride with me."

I swear you have the greatest Bo reactions. You get the balance of humor and dark commentary, plus your own personality is unapologetic and funny. Stay cool man!
I think this song really benefits from the context of the whole Netflix special and from knowing that he basically filmed the whole thing while alone in a small apartment during the first year of the pandemic. The claustrophobic feeling just hits deeper than when you just view it as a music video.

When he picks up the camera after yelling at the viewer, he does a great job of putting you on edge a bit and showing you the spinning, terrifying anxious thing he's looking at, really putting you in his shoes. The whole show is brilliant and so intimate and so sad and yet so funny... "Got it? Good, now get inside!" He really exemplifies the millennial mindset/experience so perfectly. I feel like in 20-30 years kids will be discovering this and wondering how this genius was happening under everyone's noses and he'll have such a cult following.

Hi! New subscriber, I'm afn "elder millennial" (42) and I truly feel like Bo's special, "Inside", 100% *perfectly* sums up this new generation's mind set. Beautifully filmed, absolutely hilarious, pitch black humor and very touching. Make sure you set aside a block of time to just sit with it after watching. Even if you don't react to it, just watch it, he truly taps into the vein of this generation and it's very eye opening.
As someone with cptsd and anxiety it regularly feels like the world already ended for me... So I can understand why Bo feels this way. I do care so much, but it's just exhausting. Which makes it hard to care anymore. Like, what's the point if everything is so awful. I was doing a bunch better before 2020 as well. All of the events of the last few years has undone all of that for me.
I love the fact he won a Grammy for this and this song is super simple, but conveys everything.
I appreciate yours is the only reaction I've watched that recognized what a plea for help this song is.. it's beautiful because it's a mournful song and the guy is absolutely gifted and he just can't handle it. I would love if you got the chance to chill and have some chicken wings with Bo, he seems genuinely brilliant but plagued by being perpetually the most so of anyone he likely meets coupled with his fame being unexpected and clearly crushing him in the end.

Hey so did I!! Don't be scared, don't be shy, come on in ,the water's fine
I like how I can tell that it's a genuine first time reaction by the fact that when you pause you take a few seconds to, what I'm guessing is, figure out how to express your thoughts. There's nothing rehearsed here, which is something you can often tell from plenty of other reactors and there are no overexaggerated expressions which I often find annoying. And pausing often is fine as long as you have something relevant to say.
Bo is an absolute genius musician. He is a brilliant storyteller. I have my own struggles, and his music makes me think and really helps me out. He’s hands down my favorite musician after the Inside special. Salty, if you still haven’t watched it, I really suggest you react to more songs from the special. The whole special comes full circle on the last song.
Honestly the whole entirety of 'Inside' is a mix bag. Most comedy specials feature someone who is usually just taking about their life or their views and making it funny / relatable. Bo does the same thing but through music and he is really good at it! Pausing to reflect your thoughts on what you're watching will always be a good thing. There are reaction videos that don't do it and their comments always say "nice reaction bro all you did was smile and laugh" can't please em all.
You pause, rewind, and talk as much as you want. We're here to see you react. If folks wanna see the video uninterrupted, they know where to find it. Love the reaction. Your insight is top tier.

Thanks for the heartfelt reaction Salty. He definitely wasn't in a good place by the end of the pandemic despite all the work he put in to get better in his 5 years off, but I think he really has been recovering ever since. I can't recall if he said it during an interview or what, but Bo has said in the past that we shouldn't worry too much for him because he's venting himself through his work. I believe he said that the people we should really worry about are the people who don't have an outlet like this, and who don't show these feelings to anyone. We hurt with him and for him, but I think Bo is doing well overall.
This song gets me in my emotions. There’s so much more meaning than most catch.

I know this was a month ago, but just wanted to share my favorite theory about this song: The chorus is a euphemism for being arrested by anxiety and depression. "Get your hands up!" followed by "Get out of your seat[car]!", "Eyes on me!" - these are all things an arresting officer would say.
It would be so brutal to do all that work to feel just ok again just to be told to go back inside.

you look at him like a proud dad :') i love that. i feel like there's a lot bo expresses through music that resonates with all of us in some way. he does a great job of capturing the essence of what it means to be human, both in this era and in a timeless sense. bo and i are very different. i'm a girl, he's nearly a decade older than me, i'm studying to become a school counselor, i would say i'm generally an optimistic person, and yet, i still feel like he "gets it." his work is kind of addicting to me. i think he speaks to the tired, cynical part in all of us and gives us a place to reflect on and process the parts we don't fully understand, or want to address, in a healthy way. i really appreciated your reaction! some of your videos are titled "grumpy" but you seem like a very warm and cuddly person hehe :-)

Another awesome reaction Salty! Never apologize for pausing dude. Your perspective and commentary are why we’re here! You could take a 5 minute song and turn it into a 30 minute diatribe and we’d still happily be here haha. I see the Kanye Rant and this song as parts 2 and 3 of a kind of internal, ultra-meta Bo Burnham trilogy. Part 1 is a song that you haven’t seen yet that I’m sure has been requested a BUNCH called ‘Art is Dead’. I don’t want to give anything away but that song is the first time you see him drop the veil and tell everyone exactly how he feels about himself, his art, and the world his art has put him in. He was only 19 when he wrote it and in my mind it’s the beginning of him expressing the dichotomy of loving your craft, while hating yourself. I think that old notion of the best artists are always the most tortured rings true in his case. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Especially the Green Room version! He performs it in front of Ray Ramano, Garry Shandling, Judd Apatow and a couple other famous old school comics. It’s awesome. Another really cool piece he did in this same vein is “left brain, right brain”. Also incredible. My dad and sister live over on the east coast (Sebastian and Northern Miami) and Hurricane Nicole wreaked havoc over there. Especially Sebastian. Hope y’all didn’t have too much more added to the work load. Keep on keepin on my man, loving the reactions and insight. Cheers!

Thank you too!
first time seeing you and i love you already
The thing about this song and the rest of the special Inside is that he filmed all of it alone. This dude was literally in his house singing this. Asking for people to pray for him while there was no one around. The whole special is just a descent into madness and its beautiful, brilliant and sad.
Bo has a love/hate relationship with fame and performing. It causes him to have panic/anxiety attacks and you're right he's been severely depressed at times. Where he's at with that at the current moment, only he would know.
ART IS DEAD is one of his earlier songs that really threads most of the sad/worrying undertones.
i feel like "...jesus christ" is the most appropriate reaction to this song haha
Man is a genius.....hard to put words to....his mentors were even in awe
He won Grammy for this song! Thanks for the great reaction!
“Anybody know this boy so we can give him a hug?” Yes, the boy is me, the boy is every other person in our generation sharing this human experience. Bo burnham is incredibly successful and we relate to him so well because we know he’s struggling and we are too. Wait what? He’s struggling with being famous and we relate to how just all of us feel so torn in different directions, and that our human capital, our “human resource” entry value to a company is going to be milked for every bit it can. And we feel for each other to such a level we lament that rich people pay taxes too.
i love bo's stuff. im glad your enjoying his work as well. can we start a 'give bo a hug' kickstarter?
