Tom Green was a comedian and arranger of pantomime harlequinades at the Brighton Aquarium, where it is likely he ran into director G.A. Smith as he exhibited his early films. Smith employed Mr. and Mrs. Green to perform in his comedies at 10 shillings a time.
In this film, Green is on his own performing what is known as a 'facial', that is a piece direct to camera showing changing facial expressions. The ability to get close up to the star was a great advantage that film had over the stage and early filmmakers were keen to exploit it. Here Tom Green quaffs a glass of beer and gets progressively drunker and more leery. (Bryony Dixon)

am i the only one actually impressed by how happy and alive he is in this video? look at him. fooling around, having the time of his life, a moment to remember. like everybody else, death isnt a thing you think of when you feel happiness. he didnt think that after 120 years someone would think of him like he's still among us. i actually love this video and it just makes me wonder how things would evolve in 100 years from now and how someone, from any kind, would see this man or us at the very moment. breath taking.

it's called alcoholism.
I laughed; I cried; I felt like a beer again.
Well spotted - this does indeed date from 1897. Early films can be difficult to date as there are few surviving records. We took the 1898 from Rachael Low's book which gives it as appearing in an 1898 catalogue. We can now push this back to 1897 as it appears in G A Smith's Day book which survives at the BFI.
Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder ;S
The camera man is actually still alive, & lives a quiet life in southern england, & he still walks five miles a day... amazing

Damn that’s inspiring! Makes me wanna live to 150
Let’s be honest, he’s probably about 45.
Legend has it that he is still laughing. .
What a great picture quality, from all those years ago!
@casbah1982 Although there is no onscreen title, this section of the film was described as 'Old man drinking a glass of beer' in the Prestwich Manufacturing Company's catalogue of 1898. The film was originally shown as 'Comic Faces', with a second part (presumed lost) described as "Old woman taking snuff".
Just by this clip, life hasn't changed much. ;)
This film is often cited by such a accomplished actors as Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as the film that electrified them and made them realize that they would devote the rest of their life to the thespian profession.
Looking through the comments section feels like going back in time.. 10 year old comments all over the place, wow!
He is actually 35 years old...Life was harsh back then

and medicine probably wasn’t as advanced back then
So much soul in these old film clips from over 100 years ago.
Wish I could have a beer with this guy
well, he certainly seems pleased with himself.
It must be a red triangle BASS, 15 minutes later he would be evacuating his bowels. But he would be still laughting like a drain.
They say man drinking a beer, but it looks like a wine bottle with a Heineken label. What do I know, I wasn't around then. Lol!
@haitipi agreed. Originally from UK now Canada so I've drunk my fair share over the past 30 years. btw Ales and lagers are all beers. The term lager is often interchanged with “beer”, especially outside of Germany, which is why some consumers make a distinction between beer and ale, rather than lager and ale
@BFIfilms And another factor is that average life expectancy in the late Victorian era was no more than 50, so that people of that age were relatively 'old'.
this man is still alive
Is that a bottle of Guinness? It looks like it because of the colour.

I doubt it. It would be sacrilege to pour Guinness like that.

You wouldn't pour liffey water like that!
i wonder if he would ever have thought he'd appear on youtube one day lol
He is probably in his 40's, I would guess. What a trip, he is so animated!
Pretty high quality restoration for friggin 1897, damn.
Actually I met a man on the road this morning who claims to be the reincarnation of the man drinking the beer. He told me that it wasn't beer in the glass but a magic 'reicarnate' potion from the local Magic Shop.
The image quality here is staggeringly good. You can even read the beer bottle label. It is "Watneys" beer he is drinking!!
OMG!!! This video should win an oscar!
Can anyone read what beer this is on the label? Look how dark the beer is. I wonder if it was a Porter.

+Jeffrey Lyons ''Watneys'' it was an English Ale not sure if its still sold though but it was as recent as the 70,s my Father remembered it
Heineken. ?
Wouldn't it be great if you were looking into your family history...and found out that there is early film footage of your great grandfather or another relation...to see them moving and smiling...
Heiniken?
the first Heineken AD, ladies and gentlemen.
he looks so alive and happy
I didn't know that they made movies in the 1800's. I thought that the first movies ever made were ones from the 1910's or 1920's with Charlie Chaplin. This guy in the video likes to drink beer and he is very happy
He seemed quite a personality! ;)
No, he formed a rock group. They toured Australia and New Zealand. They were considered the punks of their time.
Bukowski in his past life.
OH SHIET, MY MIND IS BLOWN, WOAH.
That's awesome quality for such an old "movie".
he was the tom green of his time
Is he drinking a Heineken?!
Is that a Heineken!?
I didn't know there was another person named Tom Green in the late 19th century!
Yo great beer my dear gentleman 🤣!!! You already funny, dear friend !!!😉😉😉 Great great great Grand Pa , it's you ????😂 Well, you was funny as i am today, in these circomstances 😉
Looks like he already had more than his share before the camera started rolling.
Much better than a bunch of today`s shots
The average life expectancy was lower in those days because so many died in infancy, not that people did not get old.
Is he OK ?
I'm sure a hollywood remake is coming soon.
lol..this old man never thought that one day in 1897, he'd get drunk and have a gay (happy) old time laugh and be filmed and end up on you tube 113 years later! lol. cool.
this is what home movies are in our times basically... xD
This is 1898 nice quality :O Well strange guy :P
Meh, just looking at him I'd say he's about 55 years old which is middle-age borderline old. Back then in 1897 that would be considered old since the life expectancy for someone was much younger than it is today.
Very rarest shortie movie ever made in UK. Beside that, many Australian movies was destroyed but only the exception of 1896 Melbourne Cup, 1906 movie classic 'The Story of Kelly Gang' in it's survived form at 17 mins long out of originally 'one-hour' slot and few others to name. Well, go hell with that Nitrate element which killed our historic movie entertainment !!! Very saddest ever lived here and there with it . . .
So? James Gandolfini's dead too but no one ever had to point that out when watching an episode of the Sopranos.
I'm guessing this was done on the 25th take...
1897?! 😳
From Johann Pachelbel's biggest world on July 30, 1828. In September 22 has got on Johann Pachelbel on 22/09/1829. Until 28/09/1829 till 05/07/1830. The Johann Pachelbel regards his circles in on your cards on 31/03/1831.
It's not the Green Tom show.
Looks like beer was stronger in those days.
Don't remember. I do remember he was indeed entertaining!
Who's watching this in 2735?
didnt know pictures were around back then
we´re all DEAD
What the hell proof is that beer and where can I buy some?
Hell, you can say that about most episodes of Bewitched ;)
So much funnier than the current Tom Green.
Perfect Videography
Must have been a pretty good beer!
after watching this clip a few times its not beer he drinking but wine, also notice when he pours drink into glass theres no froth.. i have a wine bottle from the 1880s and it looks the same...
I'll have what he's having! Make it a double!
Looks like a Heineken label somewhat, the brand certainly was around back then.
Ha! I was reading all the comments & had a funny thought. Play that new song " I'm So Happy" as the sound track. Or maybe the Benny Hill theme...
That's what I thought at first but then the film is shot in Brighton and I thought it was a pale ale like Mackesons or some such. I know it's not "Old Peculiar" which is sad somewhat as it would fit the film to a T. lol.
yeah i was serious, but inn my media lesson we basicly done a history of film and video i know now i feel stupid
Me and that guy use to chill..
he could still be alive at 180!
That's one weird beer to me, looks more like Jäger xD
Everyone on Earth that time.
Of course he is not old, he is just like 150 years old :D
Wonder what this guy's up to nowadays.
ok buddy you've had enough...time to go home lol
Must be some strong beer. That dude is lit.
Still a better love story than Twilight.
THATS HAINIKEN
well he can't handle his liquor very well
55 = borderline old ? LOL
If you like this video, you should see the one with the same guy playing flip cup! Classic!
Much better than his later work like "Freddy Got Fingered".
Someone tell me is that a Heineken? That must have been strong stuff back then now it's basically water
@DaAce96 little did you know that 6 months later your comment would be the highest rated :p
that's it?!
The last supper didnt exist.. its just a figment of someones imagination that has survived the tides of time and been twisted in all types of different ways, along with pretty much every other religous thing out there.
Great-Great-Grandpa!
Like a G6 Richard Cheese
Amazing.
@sayanroy36 pretty much
Reminds me of my dad. He's a likes a good drink too. ;)
crazy old man!
