    infamousmobbdeep1 They should never of demolished that stadium, to build the new one there, they should found another plot to build the new stadium, and turned the old wembley in to a football and sports museum, that stadium was the mecca of football with a huge rich history it was far too important to demolish, it was hollowed ground

    It still shocks me, as a North American, to see so many of these stadiums literally smack dead in the middle of residential areas. Off the top of my head, i can only think of Wrigley Field in Chicago and Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Even where i'm from, Montreal, and the cultural and socio-political-historical presence of the Montreal Canadiens in Montréal and Québec, the two arenas (current and previous) are downtown arenas. Some of these clubs truly are "local" sports teams. It's remarkable to think about to be honest.

  • @Charlie-vf1gy

    @Charlie-vf1gy

    4 жыл бұрын

    They were built during the time when football was truly a working class sport so the need for them to be local and in the middle of the customer base was key. So sad to see them slowly disappear but that is life. I'm an Evertonian and we shall soon be saying goodbye to one of footballs iconic stadiums because expansion is impossible given its location.

    I’m not a Spurs fan but White Hart Lane had a serious atmosphere on big match day. Did it really need to be demolished, or was it an unfortunate combination of capacity & location? Such a shame to see it go, a real shame. At least Highboury resembles some of the old magic that took place there, a really clever project.

    Interesting, yet sad, video. Roker Park and The Dell had an infamous reputation of having a really loud and “in-your face” atmosphere. Yet, to look at the old aerial photos, the stadiums look quite small and shallow (so one would suspect it would not hold many spectators - but the clubs sure like to “pack ‘em in”). Presumably, the acoustics of the buildings really helped the home fans cheer and sing. I doubt you can find such intimate atmospheres in today’s stadiums.

    @@jsmi5858 Nope, I prefer a good atmosphere in a modern stadium ! I don't think both are incompatible ! If you are talking about the changes in Premier league compared to the 80', isn't it more due to the raise of ticket pricing ? Leading to a certain part of the fans not being able to pay anymore ? And thus loosing a part of the atmosphere ?

    You know Anfield is 136 years old, right? You don't have to build new stadiums to keep them modern.

    It did indeed. When I get my shopping at asda now, it's hard to believe that you're stood in the place 33 people died in 1946. Spent most of my youth Saturday afternoon there. Wigan Athletic 40 k capacity? Give over.

    It's a fuckin' national disgrace what they did to Wembley. Whats with the big red square in the stands? It looks bloody awful.
