Adam Holzman played keys for Miles Davis. Enough said. I would not be surprised if the keyboard solo was improvised, just as Guthrie improvised the guitar solo. I couldn't even write something half as good as he just comes up with. Steven Wilson mixes all his own work. He has an incredible musical ear as a composer and an engineer. He also makes 5.1 surround sound mixes.

Adam is almost criminally unknown outside of the jazz world and Wilson's fans. Brilliant player, and a funny guy. Listen carefully to his playing on the title track of Wilson's "The Raven That Refused To Sing." Superficially, it's just a series of chords... but there's magic in the way he plays them on piano; he imparts a pensiveness that beautifully underscores Wilson's plaintive vocals.
Such an incredible solo from Guthrie here, what a legend

A man of great taste. Guthrie Govan is nearly never mentioned by anyone in the reaction community. It's a shame because he is one of the most awesome guitarist of our generation but so underrated that it become criminal to me. Fortunately, music nerds are fully aware of him. Steven Wilson, for me one of the most influential musicians and producers of all time. I would highly recommend going on a musical journey trough his career, from the early drone stuff of porcupine tree,, onto porcupine at its peak. And then, my favourites, his solo albums, every single on of them very different from the others.
The emotional heights of Guthries solo can only be achieved by coming directly after another solo that was the equivalent of Mt Everest. The synth was just like the peak of earth, followed by a stairway to heaven in the form of guitar.
From my perspective Hand Cannot erase is Steven's best solo album so far and my favourite album of the last decade. If you like to continue with Steven Wilson please try the live version of Luminol :-)

Steve Wilson is an absolute legend
Every now and again you get to experience something that borders on transcendental; such was the case when I saw 'Home Invasion/Regret #9' performed live. Interestingly it was not the first time, but the second gig I went to (at the end of the tour). You know that moment when you're watching a concert film and wonder how it must have been to be there? Well this time I was there, and the whole world collapsed around me so that I was a pinpoint of light observing a crescendo of perfect melodic cacophony; I lost all sense of where I was and just lived for the moment. I was so elated when it finished - then suddenly so sad that it had ended. I didn't come down from that high for several hours. I've only felt like that a handful of times at gigs: that moment in a 1980 Pink Floyd concert when David Gilmour stood atop the newly constructed wall and launched into the solo from 'Comfortably Numb' (18 year old me transfixed by the whole experience); sitting mouth agape as Wright and Gilmour traded notes during 'Echoes' on the 2006 Gilmour solo tour; those epic lyrics from 'Starless' searing into me (King Crimson 2015); Piotr Grudziński's guitar playing reducing me to blubbery tears during The Curtain Falls on Riverside's 2015 tour; the climax of 'Victorian Brickwork' by Big Big Train at Kings Place in 2015 (actually - the whole song). What memories ... Oooops, I'm rambling ... but then music does that!

Fair to Midland! You’d have a field day with them and their beautiful mixing. Personal favorites would either be: the wife, the kids, and the white picket fence or the greener grass.
Btw: I think you would totally love a whole album reaction of this. It's a great prog rock record with an interesting background story (from wiki): According to Wilson, the album is written from a female perspective, and the concept and story are inspired by the case of Joyce Carol Vincent, where a woman living in a large city dies in her apartment and no one misses her for over two years, despite her having family and friends. Wilson explained: "The basic story, or concept of the record - it's about a woman growing up, who goes to live in the city, very isolated, and she disappears one day and no one notices. There's more to it than that. Now, what's really interesting about this story is that your initial reaction when you hear a story like that is, 'Ah, little old bag lady that no one notices, no one cares about.' [Vincent] wasn't [like that]. She was young, she was popular, she was attractive, she had many friends, she had family, but for whatever reason, nobody missed her for three years."
That was beautiful trip and great explanation in the building of the song.. LISTEN TO "DRIVE HOME" Steven Wilson. Also with Guthrie Govan.

I got to see him open for Opeth in 2011. Best live sound I’ve ever experienced.

They switch - Steven plays on the intro section, then Nick on Stick during the verses.
for some weird reason this reminds me of both the old and new DOOM soundtracks
Day 1 of asking for Opeth's The Lotus Eater because from a composition side I feel like it's their best and most creative.
Wilson is a master of taking relatively simple motifs and developing them into something extraordinarily moving. He's no slouch guitarist but he also surrounds himself with some of the best players around to do the bulk of interpreting his compositions (ie Adam Holzman, Marco Minneman, Guthrie Govan). The results are most often compelling and truly imaginative. He's got a great musical mind and great ears... Nice choice today and enjoy your analysis...
Great reaction, pretty much what I though when I first heard this song. This is my favorite song from the all amazing album Hand.cannot.erase. Looking forward your next Steven reaction, pick any song, It will be great. Cheers.

Wilson is a brilliant musical magpie. All the suggestions are good ones ,as he is consistently good. So I'll suggest 2 not requested as often, but definitely appreciated by SW fans... "Remainder the Black Dog" from his jazziest album Grace Before Drowning " The Watchmaker" ....a gothic , ghost story , from The Raven That Refused To Sing. Again , you can't go wrong. Like Bowie, Steven is a musical chameleon and magpie...and very consistent.
