  • @johnblack3204

After my first initial comments I thought I'd give some insight on the band. Something that makes Less Than Jake interesting is that they actually have two vocalists. Roger Lima is not only the vocalist on this song, but he is also the bass player! Chris Demakes is their other vocalist and also plays guitar. A song that I would check out with him as lead vocal is Nervous in the Alley. Another interesting fact is that the lyrics are from the drummer on most of their songs except for the newest album. His name is Vinnie Fiorello. What I think makes Less Than Jake very interesting is that they are somewhere between pop punk and ska punk. I think the album that shows this the best is Anthem. I think both Hello Rockview and Anthem are my two favorite albums by them and it depends on the day which one is my favorite. As someone that listens to ska almost daily I'm really excited for more. I think it'd be really interesting if you looked at ska through the years. When most people hear ska they just think of the third wave Ska punk scene from the 90s and early 2000s, but ska originated in Jamaica in the 60s. The second wave of Ska is very fascinating. There's some really good two tone second wave ska coming out of Britain in the '80s that would be fun for you to look at. I really hope we get more of you going down the ska rabbit hole.

I'm a year late, but here I am. This is the song that got me into Less Than Jake 20 years ago. They are still my favorite band. They bring an energy that I rarely see from other artists, and the live shows I've been to have been insanely hype, even though I don't like how they sound live. Their stage presence is just that good. And would you believe Roger, who plays bass and does back up vocals, learned to play just for the band? And they've had a different number of horn players over the years, and normally have two that are able to play multiple horns, so they get a lot of variety in there. And don't worry about the lyrics on this one. They don't make a whole lot of sense. And the intro soundbite is bleh.

You guys are all correct. I'm a jerk. My first copy of hello rockview was a burned copy from a friend (I bought it soon after) and she hand drew liner notes for each song. Ska came in several waves, less than jake were part of the 3rd wave which is were punk came into it and was when the US got involved, the 1st wave happened in Jamaica in the 50's with the likes of the skatelites, then it came to the UK in the 70's and we got the 2nd wave or 2-tone ska with bands like the specials, madness, and the beat. I think it would be very interesting to see you react to something from each wave to see how it has progressed over it's lifespan. Some more 3rd wave to check out though would include; Less than jake - the science of selling yourself short Streetlight Manifesto - Would you be impressed The mighty mighty bosstones - someday i suppose Goldfinger - superman

I'm so happy to see this. I never expected to see Less Than Jake here, they have been my favorite band for over 20 years. They still tour to this day and are great live. This particular song Roger (Bass) is the main vocalist, but most songs the main singer is Chris (Guitar) with backups/harmonies from Roger. Here are a few more recommendations from a few different "eras" of LTJ (they've been around since '92) -- "Lockdown," "Scott Farcas Takes It On the Chin," "Plastic Cup Politics," "My Very Own Flag," "Escape from A-bomb House," and "Does the Lion City Still Roar?". You'll get the most clicks from "The Science of Selling Yourself Short" and "Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts" though.

This video made what was otherwise a bummer of a morning into a much better one. Love LTJ and ska, and I used to play this track all the time on my radio show in college back in the early 00s. Thanks for this and all your videos! EDIT: Wasn't able to finish the video earlier, and you asked for suggestions for LTJ tunes - "Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts", "Dopeman", "History of a Boring Town", "Look What Happened" (two versions of this, both good, but my preference is the one off of Anthem), "The Science of Selling Yourself Short". And if you want to continue down the checkered road of ska, I would love to see you tackle some Reel Big Fish. Awright!

This is the first "reacts" video I have ever enjoyed, because it's not some guy thrusting his mug into the camera with over-the-top and contrived facial expressions. He seems genuine. Also, instant credibility for leading with how great the bass playing is. Less Than Jake's bass player is incredible, and has always been the shining star of the band. This bass line is one of his best. Ska bands tend to rise and fall with their bassists. The guitar usually does that "chicka" thing on the up notes, so it's the bass that really shapes the groove and the melody. Roger is as good as any ska bassist there is. Probably not a coincidence that Less Than Jake is as popular as any ska band around.
