The old Danish lyrics say the following: The home fades. Vil launched a deadly horde upon them. The oars and mast were destroyed. Who brought? Who brought the horde to this distant land? The fishes of the streams of Firnoy. They swim adrift. From the land of bright meadows. Who brought? Who brought the horde to this distant land? I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 1,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and in 2019 they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. When they built the drums for the group, one of which is made from horse skin, a doctor drew blood from the three members of the group and painted the drums and some of their clothes with it. The male singer with the deep voice is a great tattoo artist and very professional. The bones the girl plays with are human bones and sometimes they have had problems in the countries of the tour to introduce them through the border from the country where the concert was held. @@iiroaro808 A pleasure. The songs in this concert are so different from each other that it is in itself a very enriching experience to be able to see them one by one. So I recommend it. You can see from warriors armed with spears and shields invoking the God Odin, to magical rituals. I am not going to recommend specific titles because as I have told you, each Heilung song is its own experience and very different from the rest. A hug and that you enjoy them. I know they will surprise you very much.

This band is amazing!!!

the songs name is Krigsgaldr (war chant/song). it's inspired by the Eggja stone, a rune stone/standing stone in Norway that (possibly) bemoans an invading horde bringing war to peaceful inhabitants, so they reluctantly take up arms. Certain lines are taken directly from specific translations of the Eggja stone, written in pre-Viking age Norse in Elder Futhark, so translation variations abound. Either way, Heilung is quite the experience. They call themselves an "amplified history group".

*galdr could be translated as chant/song but it is also a magic spell. So the word has a bit extra "magical" dimension to it. It has been speculated that the word is related to the word "galinn" (mad/crazy) and "gala" (to crow for roosters but also "to chant", "to charm", "to enchant" and it carry the meaning of a high pitch noise, scream and/or shout). So the word "Krigsgaldr" kind of carries the meaning of a "enchanted war cry", "magical war chant" or "spell of war" - the "magical undertone" is built into the meaning carried by the word *galdr and should therefore, according to me, not be forgotten or lost in translation :-)

Invading horde is correct. Two of the German tribes, Rugi and Horder migrated north and settled in Rogaland and Hordaland, possibly due to constant skirmishes with the Romans. The word "horde" and "hoarder" comes from this tribe.

OED says the initial -h- seems to have been acquired in Polish. Transferred sense of "any uncivilized gang" is from 1610s. Related: Hordes.”

Having been in the crowd for this live is still one of the most magical moments in my life. This was during Castlefest, a medieval/pagan festival in the Netherlands. This was their first official live ever and the entire performance was really just one big ritual that the entire crowd was a part of. Incredibly intimate and magical. I've gone to Castlefest for 13 years in a row, it's beautiful and magical and super inclusive to anyone, no matter the age. Visiting the festival is like coming home

Heilung sing in English, German, old-Norse, proto-Germanic... Krigsgaldr is a song about a village/tribe leaving in peace, but they're about to be attacked by invaders. They want to avoid war but are forced to go into battle.

One thing I've seen mentioned when people watch the recording of the LIFA concert this track comes from is the audio setup and mixing because it is amazing. There are probably between 40 and 50 microphones on stage covering every singer and every instrument and yet the audio is perfectly balanced, nothing feels overbearing or too quiet and every vocal is crystal clear. Absolutely superlative work from the stage crew and the audio techs.

@@Legion563 thanks so much for the link! That looked like a fun show. It’s too bad COVID has delayed and cancelled so many shows here it’ll probably be awhile before they make it to the states. Then when they do it’s usually California or New York. My Boston area used to be so much better for bands when we didn’t have as many winning sports teams...lol We still have a lot of street musicians that are finally starting to play again though and a few places left that’ll feature a band like Heilung. But I’m probably going to have to drive further to a bigger city to see them if they do get here.

The mixing is phenomenal for a live performance, given the complexity of the arrangement. Whoever the engineer was, they are a master of the craft.

They have a song where one of the instruments is literally a shield wall.

Pronounced like High-lung. German for "healing". In German, when you see e+i together you usually pronounce it as an "i", and then i+e is pronounced as "ee". Examples people might know could be "nein" or "liebe". Sometimes they switch the letters round though when words switch into the past tense, just to mess with anybody learning the language. Anyway, as you may be able to tell, I'm bored in work, so thanks for getting me through it Geez!

These guys make some of the most simultaneously beautiful and terrifying music out there. Some of their tracks are spoken word with lots of sound effects, like it's an audio clip straight from a GoT battle scene. One of the most unique bands ive heard

There is one of these tracks were a percussion effect if like an arrow that hits a piece of wood with great power, followed by a man's scream. So intense and terrifying.

Yeah... though, until the next performance, it's the next best thing, lol. It's at least interesting to see what other people think of them.

Heilung was for me one of those cases where the KZread algorithm scored a huge success (your great channel was another). For me "Hamrer Hippyer" was the track and of course the thumbnail with the beautiful Maria Franz and her antlers intrigued me but then I got totally blown away at a deep emotional level right from the first moments of watching the video. I must have watched it like ten times that day alone. Everyone else is recommending "In Maidjan" which to be fair is also a great track, but I'll push "Hamrer Hippyer" because it's a great display of the three voices and a great closer for the whole show that encompasses all their performances. The language and influences come from Old Germanic pre-Roman empire traditions and it just comes to show how music just transcends time and space in an almost magical way to touch the mind and soul of an old Mexican dude that never has even been close to that region of the world, and comes from a very different culture and strong traditions. I'm still here! Awwwright!!!

I am SO happy you did this breakdown! The song is called Krigsgaldr, and the concert is the Lifa (Life) performance. The bands name, Heilung, is 'Healing' in German. I saw them live on their only US tour in Portland. FANTASTIC show. The crowd, including myself, was absolutely mesmerized the whole time. Thanks again for the breakdown!!!!!

I absolutely love this group. They sing in about 7 different languages. High German. Norse. Old German English.

One thing that might be of interest to an engineer: Maria, the female singer, and Christoffer, the gentleman in green, are not only married, but also owners and operators of one of the most important studio's in European folk music, Lava Studio in Copenhagen. Christoffer is a magician with mixing, and that is why you hear such an amazing mix in their work.

I don't think I've ever heard a live performance this complex, that was mixed as well as this was. It was masterful. The musicians being sound engineers makes sense.

They use live looping when necessary for the drones. And they use some of their own samples for nature sounds - hence the computers. Other than that it is totally live.

To be fair, Geebz could play ambient white noise while he reads me the label of a shampoo bottle for 17 minutes and I’d still love it. Maria Franz should be one of the biggest stars on the planet. It takes three bands to express the full range of her talents.

I love how you can hear her clacking the bones over all the other instruments.

I will never forget the first time i watched this full show, mesmerizing stuff

Here we go! I was at this live concert, never heard of them. Left me in a trance and been throat singing all weekend after the concert Sometimes I find it hard to believe, but this LIFA at castlefest was their very first live preformance and they headlined the festival with this show

I have tickets for Heilung in December this year...fingers crossed.

Her name is maria franz and her voice is otherworldly..heilung's other stuff is even more amazing

The way the purity of her lines is tainted by the torment of war after the intrusion of conflict forms a symbiotic beauty of innocence and the need to survive hits hard.

From what I've gathered from snippets of interviews with members of the band, this album/live show carried the theme of a peaceful community corrupted by war bought to them by invaders. The entire performance is an emotional experience.

I listen to Alfadhirhaiti for the first time last night, by the end of it i found myself howling lol ive only started listening to them (thank you yt algorithm you did something right) but they are amazing, you can really feel the magick, i can only imagine how strong it is live, though krigsgaldr and norupo are so far my two favorites

They were the first act I saw during a particular Wacken Open Air (dont remember the year), the sun was just setting and everybody was hyped for a few days of metal and carnage. But when Heilung startet up everyone got calm, like a meditation exercise for thousands of metalheads. That Show was quite the experience

Love the surf intro! Mahalo from northern Maine. Heilung pens themselves as Amplified History and is a great way to dive into what it might sound like as a North Germanic tribe before the fall of the Roman Empire (in the west)

Saw them live last year in Chicago right before covid shut everything down. It was one of the most surreal and spiritual experiences I've had.

This music is transcendent. I don't think I've ever heard an arrangement that complex be mixed so well in a live performance. Big kudos to whoever the engineers were.

OH yes, i flew a few thousand miles to see this band, and I will do it again. The trip into mystery during the concert was greater and more distance than the lengths i went to get there. I had listened to the album a number of times before i got there, but it was such a fuller experience to see them in person. I will totally try and see them again.

14:40 it’s throat singing, which several northern/north eastern tribes have sung for millinia from Norse to the mongal steps! So cool and frightening! Love it. Almost like a growl, very guttural, but still on tune and almost fills the place of a guitar or rattling of a brass wind instrument. If you read this and have any further thoughts or agree respond, I’d love to see if I’m the only one who sees/picks up on these things or if I’m not quite picking up on the right things.

It is an experience to say the least. They saged the whole place before they began. They talk about bringing the audience through a build, then a storm, then a come down. It is soo true. They refer to their acts as "performance history" and their concerts are more like full rituals. Saw them live and there are no words.

t his band was the last live experience i had before the pandemic, and yeah, it was definitely a moving transformative experience

I was super lucky to hear their whole performance in the festival. Not only goosebumps, but you definitely fall into this weird trans like state of mind... They are incredible. By the end of the performance it felt as if the whole crowd were in the same rhythm, the music was really inspiring the crowds dancing and whatnot, we were all like this group of waves in the sea. Experience like no other. Definitely highly recommend anyone to hear them live!

i always cried when i listen to their musical art, I don't know why, but the sounds are somehow ancient, even when I'm not an European descent (I'm half Indonesian and a half Chinese).

But I feel it goes beyond our notion of culture and countries of today... This speaks to an ancient, primordial culture trait our species once shared, it's like a cultural root for humanity, I can't really explain but it's definitely there. Ritualistic chanting is the kind of stuff that's in our genes as a species, and speaks louder for some people than for others nowadays I guess.

This kind of musik helps to understand them and their mythology. Go and visit Cheong Pyeong in South Corea. The Far East is this time the Solution for the West and the rest of all Humankind. I was there with my family and friends and it became a Big Surprise for us. Give it a Try!

The fellow harmonizing is the significant other of the the woman singing, Maria. They have another project called Songliekr, and they put out a video last year called Ulvetime. It's on KZread, check that out. No costumes, just a beautiful song.

There's some heavy Einstürzende Neubauten influence there. They're one of the most important Industrial bands ever. Honestly all the industrial you hear today is influenced by them to some extent. Neither Nine Inch Nails or Rammstein for example would be what they are today without EN. They happen to be from Germany, as so many important industrial bands are. The name means Collapsing New Buildings. Neubauten are specifically the buildings that were built in Berlin after it was bombed to hell in WW2. So it would be cool if you reacted to them. Maybe the live versions of Was Ist Ist? Or Haüs Der Luge. They're definitely a band you want to start with a live performance in any case.

I heard that industrial influence in there too. But I am not sure wether it was EN whom were influenced by these types of ancient rythms

i love how you feel the songs, not just react, when you close your eyes feel the instruments, vibe of entire performance, this is amazing, hope you do more and more unique bands reviews, you reactions are very true, that is rarity today.

Damn, I have seen this so many times over the internet. And I actually was there, not knowing what Heilung actually was. It was in The Netherlands, recorded at Castlefest. I even recognise my own blowing horn in the audience at the end of the song, to respect the song. I went to my tent in awe, in a state of not knowing who I was and what I would want to be, and it made me think. This was only the second time I ever had this feeling. That concert did change me, and I am sure I was not the only one.

It must have been an amazing experience for everyone. It wasn’t just a concert it was a spiritual experience. Even just watching it gives that experience. I managed to watch it before ads were included and have since bought the cd so l can listen to it uninterrupted.

I absolutely love Heilung. But what I love even more is the moment someone who is listening for the first time falls in love with them too

In Maidjan from the same concert gets my vote..... actually, any Heilung track gets my vote :)

This music will literally awaken the warrior spirit. When that horn starts I get chills and goosebumps, followed by an acute burst of adrenaline. I love Heilung. Wardruna is also great and highly recommend both of them.

Aloha! Great band! I connect very deep with this type of music being of Slavic / German descent. Wardruna, Eluveitie, Drudkh, Solstafir are some of my favorites...

The band is made up of members from Norway, Denmark and Germany (hence the German name which means “healing”). They take inspiration from every possible written reference from the Iron Age and the Germanic/Viking age. They describe their music as amplified history. The song is called Krigsgaldr (war song) and Lifa is a reference to the actual event, they play LIFE at a festival. They named the CD and DVD recordings “Lifa”. Every song of theirs is fantastic, but I can recommend Alfathirhaitir (names of the allfather) In Maidjan if you want an incredible solo of the female singer and Hamrer Hippyer (believe it or not when you hear it but it is a healing song) which has an epic sound overall

There are some cool interview on YT (the one on Charismatic voices) from the female singer where she explains how the group came to exist to delight our ear :)

wife and i are flying to denver in october to see them at redrock. have not been to a real concert in over 20 years. somehow i suspect this one is going to be in first place as for musical experiences.

I love this show. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to the whole thing. It's everything I want in an A+ show. Always down to watch a reaction to Heilung.

I saw them 2 years ago. Instead of taking the car or train I decided to walk there from home. It took 3 days and added to the experience.

So happy to see you cover this one. The whole concert is amazing. My favorite is Alfadhirhaiti...but it was my introduction to them, and thus will always have a soft spot in my heart.

It’s all the more impressive when you take into account that this was their first live performance. [EDIT: Also, as I understand it, there’s some record of the old shamanic Scandinavians employing “gala” (or a crow-voice) in their rites/ceremonies to honor Odin. I’d have to look more into it though.]

I absolutely LOVE Heilung ever since I was introduced to them by my gf! I was shown "Norupo" by them. I really recommend that next!!

Pagan folk music seems to be a trend lately, which is perfectly fine with me. My autistic daughter listens to stuff like this (Viking music, she calls it) to sleep. I'm supposing it's because of the drone, it's very inviting and warm and equalizing in her brain. Like a reset button for her. I haven't listened to all Heilung yet, but "In Maidjian" is a nice one. I really loved this reaction, thank you!

Female singer also sings in a Band called Euzen for ~12 years now. I really love them; I'd recommend Metamorph LIVE @ Castlefest 2015. (: And yes, I saw them live and either they get you and you are dancing in trance the whole concert, or they don't and you walk away. I don't think there are a lot of people in between.

Heilung translates to "Healing". That's the power you're feeling; your soul healing.

I am a huge fan! My preferred song in this album is 'Alfadhirhaiti'. Heilung has helped me a lot in these pandemic times. I had spent nights listening and mesmerized by the sound of its songs. I strongly recommend Heilung as a great immersive experience as well.

Number 9 aries here, april 10th, and I love that mug lol. anyways, listen to that whole concert, Marias voice is haunting . she is easily my favorite female vocalist and her range is unreal.

If you get a chance, see them live. It was the most remarkable, magical, enchanting experience of my life
