Point 1: nice little joke! Point 2: you dont have to apologize if you get a text from your daughter! I think most can relate! Point 3: I noticed that you already had the Final Fantasy 7 Original Music experiance. That was a nice video, but i would like to hear your point of view on the Final Fantasy 9 music too, since it was also on the Playstation 1 and the last game Nobuo Uematsu did fully himself. It's said, that he burned himself out, after he gave so much to the game.

One of the most crazy things to me about these compositions from David Wise was the tools he used to make these tracks on the SNES. He was heavily limited by what he could load at once in memory and developed a lot of interesting programming techniques with the SNES Sound Sequencer to quick load different samples while the song was playing live on the system; this way he could pull in way more sounds and do the large sweeps that he was so known for in these tracks.

Donkey Kong Snes' music is a technical marvel of Samples, waves, fades, delays and echoes that had to be keyed in hexadecimal by hand. It was a ton of work to type in music like that. And not only was it typed like that to save space on the cartridge, but the sound chip only had like 64kb of RAM. So this music had to play in tandem with sounds effects of the player, the enemies, and objects. That's why you heard things like bird chirps and insects into the composition itself, because including them in the music channels were a way to include the ambience of the jungle or environment while still allowing enough RAM to allow sound effects to play through. It's musical art on a technical level as limitation gives birth to innovation.

you know what, I think I would really enjoy one of these streams sometime. Might just show up to the next one. You've got such a delightful dad energy. Plus it's so wonderfully innocent hearing a neophyte to gaming asking if there's some way to listen to the music in the game by itself. I grew up on this stuff, and I took "sound tests" for granted. Hell, I think I used them more to input secret codes than to sit and listen to the music. And yet starting in my teens, getting online, listening to game music started becoming something I just flat-out did on its own.

Interesting fact about Jungle Hijinx is that the song has 3 distinct parts- the buildup intro, then the main segment with the melody, then the slower outdo segment which Geebz thought might’ve been pause menu music. This is because the composer actually made 3 themes for Jungle Hijinx and he was torn on which one to pick, so he combined all 3! That’s why the track is decently long for a game from 1994, most loop after a minute or so.

Been poking around at this channel and this is great, but I wish people didn't send you the "restored" versions. They aren't mixed the same as the original tunes, so some finesse is lost. Just be wary when you see that note on a video because it's being presented in a way not intended by the composer. Still, I've always absolutely loved the Donkey Kong Country soundtracks. The first song, "Forest Interlude," may be my most favorite song from the series. Found you yesterday and these are very enjoyable. Keep it up! :)

The first one is from the 5th (out of 6/7) area of the 2nd game (DKC2), which is like a haunted, dreary forest. The second (Jungle Hijinx) is from the first level (and another early jungle level) of the first game (DKC1). The third (Crocodile Cacophony) is the background music of the Final Boss fight in DKC2, aboard K.Rool's flying machine/fortress. The 4th (Mining Melancholy) is from 2 or 3 mine/cave stylized levels from 2nd area and beyond in DKC2. I'm not sure how much of a gamer you are, but the context of the game with the music does take a lot of these to another level. You mentioned Hollow Knight, that's pretty hard, good luck! :D It's a wonderful medium, marrying together so many brilliant things... music, art, world building, storytelling, characters and backgrounds, all kinds of humor, competitive spirit, technique, learning-curves, language, social aspects (multiplayer)... Gaming is wonderful.

I have a few requests I would like to make. Specifically pertaining to Final Fantasy composer Nubuo Uematsu and his Deep Purple Influence. I'm a big fan of this era myself, so I'll provide examples below. (FFVII) - Birth of a God (FFVII) - Still More Fighting (FFVII) - J E N O V A Something interesting I found about that last one (J E N O V A) is that the synthesizer lead is almost note for note the same as the intro to "Mr Crowley" from Ozzy Osbourne. Don Airey played keys on that album and was the keyboardist for Rainbow which was a supergroup formed from Deep Purple. Thus, Airy was within that circle of influence which is why he is Deep Purple's current keyboardist. If you listen these, I recommend the uncompressed versions from Mathew Valente where uncompressed the samples. Either that or the original versions as newer ones tend to downplay the organ which is so essential to these songs.

I'm new to your channel, but I enjoyed this video. You spoke at the end of what you want to start playing, and that's awesome! I don't know if you played games in the 70s-80s and moved on to other hobbies or just dabbled through console generations, but of the choices you were deciding on, I'd recommend Journey for a new player. Games like Hollow Knight and Dark Souls/Bloodborne, while beautiful at what they do, are made to be challenging and push players to their limit. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying them first, but if you reach a wall or become frustrated, please don't become discouraged from playing and finding what games best work for you. Journey is much more about the experience and will help you gain a general knowledge of the controller/keyboard. Whatever you decide, hope you enjoy.

What a bummer, you should have gone with the Sam Miller's restored versions for all of the songs. Sam went through the trouble of obtaining synth sounds from that era, to find out the specific instrument banks that David Wise used, prior to downsampling them to fit the SNES hardware. This is something David Wise himself doesn't even have, as he didn't think to "save" a version of the music with the original instruments. When Rare decided to release a music CD with the DKC soundtrack, they pretty much had to use the SNES music, because no higher quality existed.

Hi, I just started watching some of your videos and I've liked the insight you give into these compositions! One thing I'd recommend for the future is making sure you are listening to the OG composition to judge. What you listened to fir Forest Interlude was a fan-made restoration attempt. Said restoration attempts are always cool to see but they aren't always accurate. They almost always have some off mixing and possibly even some incorrect notes. I love Jammin' Sam Miller's work I just think it would be better to judge the original versions. Just something I'd recommend you keep in mind for the future. Especially if you are doing more Donkey Kong Country stuff! Have a good day!

Greatly enjoy your reactions and analysis so far. Great stream 3 weeks ago. Maybe a curve of recommendation: Fire Emblem Three Houses God Shattering Star. A very operatic piece for a climactic final battle. Maybe the composition is somewhat intriguing for you.

If I could make a few recommendations. Four good tracks from Chrono Trigger would be the "Main Theme", "Corridors of Time", "Frog's Theme", and "Schala's Theme". Four good tracks from Dark Cloud 2 would be "Sindain", "Secret Energy", "Underground Water Channel", and "Battle of the Future". Thanks for everything you do, Jack

Well, I have seen you review Aquatic Ambience and Forest Interlude. Only need to hear Stickerbrush Symphony to round out the trilogy. Naturally since Stickerbrush is my favorite, I'm in my feelings that you haven't did that one yet 😂😂

The soundtracks are amazing, but also huge props to Sam Miller, who revitalizes these tracks and gives them the proper care to restore them.

I'd like to request that you take a look at the OST for the original Rise of the Triad (the reboot under the same name has a bunch of remixed tracks that are also great, but I still prefer the originals). It's possibly one of the best soundtracks to use the standard general midi soundfont, and the more high-energy tracks like "Suck This" or "Going Down the Fastway" use a very distinct style that I can only describe as Manic Orchestral Synthwave. Although my favorite out of all of them is the track "I Choose the Stairs". It's pretty old and it's not a terribly popular game outside of the old-school FPS community, but I highly recommend you give it a listen. It's good shit.

I love your videos! Since you're on SNES games like Donkey Kong Country... If I could put in a request for a video game OST that I think gets horribly overlooked and underappreciated, please take a moment to look at the OST for the Super Nintendo version of Gradius 3. Amazing arrangements, heavily layered, and even has tracks that remind me of something I'd hear played by Rush. I would love to see it get more attention and see what you think of it. I could send you a link to a great KZread video that has it in its entirety.
