Founded in the 7th century, a free state between the 14th and 19th centuries, Dubrovnik became an important Mediterranean sea power and rivaled Venice as a trading port. The Old City of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding medieval architecture and fortified old town, for its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains.

I love this video of Dubrovnik ! Instead of talking, the music let my spirit free to see the beauty of Dubrovnik. My granddaddy was born there in 1886 during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He earned his way to the United States by stoking the boiler that powered the steamship with coal. When he came into Ellis Island, he spoke Serbian. But his birth certificate says "Austria," I'm not sure why. He settled in Buffalo, NY off of Lake Erie and started a business selling Blue Coal. He and my grandmother raised my mother and 3 siblings, and he lived to be 100 years old. I miss him very much. He always called me his "Ginny Love." I'd love to visit. ❤

An interesting story. Btw, your grandfather had an Austrian passport because Dubrovnik became part of Austria after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Nikola Tesla had the same papers when he emigrated to the USA. Only 7 years earlier, Napoleon abolished the Republic of Dubrovnik and annexed it to French Illyria. Another interesting fact: although Dubrovnik is now part of Croatia, the Republic of Dubrovnik paid an annual tribute to the Serbian Orthodox monastery Hilandar (also known as "Ston tribute") from the middle of the 14th century (1333) until 1814, although Serbia fell under Ottoman rule in 1459. Even during the French rule in Dubrovnik from 1805 until 1811, the amount was regularly sent to Mount Athos. The honorable citizens of Dubrovnik committed to pay this tribute after the Serbian emperor Stefan Dušan ceded the Pelješac peninsula to the Republic.

My older brother and I were estranged, and I had loaned him a cassette tape recording of my mom's sister "interviewing him" about how he got here and it was so comforting to me to hear his voice again and he promised he would make a copy of it and give it back to me and never did before he passed away in 2020. He also broke into my house when I was in ICU after open-heart surgery and took his Immigration Papers. His last name was Tomic, but he apparently dropped an "h" at the end when he got to Ellis Island. Thankfully, my mom's brother's son will keep the family name intact, I just wish I had more documentation. He left to me a $5 gold-piece from 1855 (C) that his father gave to him, and an old musical instrument (I think) was called an ocarina. I was hoping somebody would see this, so thank you from the bottom of my heart for explaining things Marko! 🙂💯💫

Wonderful that the old city has survived so well, despite the pressures of modern life and tourism. A town or city needs to be a kind of overlooked backwater, so that the pressures of commerce and wealthy people wanting new grand houses do not rip out the heart before it can develop the magic of great age. See also Issigeac in southern France, and Sandwich in southern England. Not so large or scenic as Dubrovnik, but still possessing some of the magic of time gone by. A perspective on our own time.

Beautiful Dubrovnik, was there 45 yrs ago 1977. Amazing place and went to their markets and bought a beautiful peasant white blouse. Did walk around a bit of the walled city and knew that "Game of Thrones" had been filmed there too. Thanks for sharing Milosh!
