Old Biker - Building the XS650 Old School Chopper

I have been riding bikes since 1976, my first bike was a Triumph Tiger Cub, after that it was a Yamaha AS1 125 Twin, and then many many more to follow, in my spare time I restore old classics and repair and service bikes for other bikers. I have four bikes at present, a Triumph T140E, Two XS650's One chop and one standard and a XJ750. I will be riding these bikes in my videos.
I have just opened a new online parts store (2021) where I will be selling new and used motorcycle parts, check it out!

    You know back in the early 70s it was either Sportster or Triumphs or of course auctioned cop bikes. Then came the Honda fours. Once in a while some clown would try and chop a Yamaha. It never worked. That sure isn’t the case anymore. I would love to have this Yomamaha chopper. It’s really nice. I love it.

    Nice chop, very tidy well done. Personally I preferred the 2009 springer version. The great thing about choppers is that they are all individual and made to the owners preferences not others :)

    I’m a Harley chopper guy but these foreign bikes are looking better and better! Like the rake and stretch on your frame. To make your bike look great make the bottom frame rail horizontal with the pavement. Install your rear wheel (you can’t change its position!) then lower the front of the frame until it is level with the ground. Then do your measuring for fork length also figuring in your front wheel and tire height. You probably already know this as you built a real nice bike but there might be some guys that don’t. You see a lot of mis proportioned bikes running around. Again real nice job, I have got to try one of these non Harley’s!!!!

    Yeah I agree, when I had a 19" wheel it was just a little high, but once the 21" wheel was on it now sits way too high, I will talk about that in my next video which I am currently working on, I swapped the engine in the chop for another off eBay and will be getting that back on the road as soon as some parts arrive.

    I noticed your not running a top motor mount..I really like the look... I want to do that to my xs650..would you recommend it..does it vibrate really bad or crack the other mounts? I'm really curious..thanks

  • @OldBiker

    @OldBiker

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dan, I do have a top motor mount, it's just hidden, I wouldn't recommend not having one as it will vibrate a little more, not that you would notice much but that slight vibration could cause issues. I will do a close up of what I made the next time I go out on it.

    Hi mate, I'd say it was roughly the same but is more front heavy when pushing it around, easy to ride though, I need to raise the back of the seat up another inch as I feel like I'm sliding off the back, I made the seat risers on a lathe so will just make some longer ones at some point, they are made to just bolt on so changing them will be easy.

  • @ludditeneaderthal

    OldBiker I can see the seat is a bit low in the back... Those solos seem to really need to be mounted "tail high" with no load on them. With the rake and taller wheel the harder steering is fairly unavoidable, lol. I imagine it also make a pinch more straight line stability too. Definitely a REALLY nice build, very old school, but practical. Gonna replace the CV carbys?

  • @OldBiker

    @OldBiker

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah I will definitely make the solo seat higher at the back, or even make a seat to suit me, either way it's going to get altered at some point, now the weather here is turning for the better I'll be out on the chop sometime soon. I'll keep the original carbs on for now but me mate Brian has a couple of performance carbs he got for his Triumph, so may give those a go at some point if he not going to use em.

  • @OldBiker

    Not in the UK, we just change the engine number in the V5 (title), it's the frame number you cant change, the engine is just another interchangeable part, I in over 40 years of riding and driving vehicles have never ever had any of the engine number looked at, when taking for a MOT it is only the frame number that's checked.

    OldBiker Yeah I wanted to Springer my bike but the risk is not worth my life ,there good I guess but what I read on there history is not so good. I have a metric bike that i want to put a lil rake on but the problem is they dont have ANY custom stuff for my bike ,so if you have ideas I'd like to hear . I dropped a like and sub. My fork tube is 33mm I believe.

    That rigid frame I bought already had a Harley headstock fitted so I didn't have to convert anything, when I put a wide glide front end on it I had to machine some new spacers and then add an old style speedo drive, the only one I could find was for a 19" front wheel and after putting a 21" on it, the speedo reads a little slower than I'm actually going.

    Hi Dan, the springers were home made and had no real bearings in the swivel points, they were also pretty rusty so in the end I used the 1" bar from them and made the solo seat supports.

    you build an amazing bike for sure. i would have chosen a differens rear fender but thats personal. and this is finally one of the good looking bikes. everybody is going weird 70s with these bikes. openexhaust and horrible narrow handlbars and goofy king and queen metalvlake vinyl seat.s and long front ends but with the fram at an angle instead of it being horizontal makes it all just look like crap but thats the style these days. just look at all the bikes at the born free bikse show i love the event look amazing great people and great athmosphere but the style of those bikes are 99% horrible in my opnion. i hate that style you really build the 60s style chopper and i love it. great and amazing work very inspiring. i want to build a chopper to. harley would be best but is crazy expensive in this country. and building a cool frame is crazy hard overhere with laws and stuff. but the saying here is they can make it incredibly hard and expensive but cant make it illigal so wil see. thanks for the inspiration looks great sounds great

    Cheers Vince, when I started the project I wanted the same look as one I had owned many years ago, and I also wanted the easy rider chop look, the one I had years ago had springers on the front which was quite scary at speed watching them bend all over the place lol

    yeah i get it. i love the springers but they are pricey and the ride quality is something special to yeah ;) i love the easy rider bike to. but it drove horrible at low speeds he had to fight it constantly but thats the game right looks are everything cause nobody rides a hardtail for the love of it.
