Old Believers in Imperial Russia

Who are the Old Believers? And what is their role in Russian history?
Following the raskol, or schism, of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1656-1666 over Patriarch Nikon’s ritualistic reforms to Russian Orthodoxy, those who adhered to the pre-Nikonian, old rites collectively became known as staroobriadtsy - Old Ritualists. They are more commonly known today by the anglicized term “Old Believers.” Over the following centuries and through their history, the Old Believers spread throughout Russia and its immediate borderlands as both a means to maintain their way of life and escape persecution. Yet, even while facing constant threats and persecution for their faith from their oppressors, the Old Believers found numerous opportunities to flourish and establish thriving communities in the Russian wilderness and major urban centers. Ultimately, they built some of imperial Russia’s most influential and wealthy entrepreneurial and industrial dynasties.
The lecture will explores the "whys" and "hows" of the Old Believers, their place within Russian history, and the role they played in shaping tsarist Russia. It considers the paradoxical existence of the Old Believers in Russia as both an oppressed and opportunist religious minority. Dr. Peter De Simone examines how viewing the Old Believers’ history has often led to it being continuously unknown, misunderstood, or intentionally misrepresented. Particularly, the Old Believers collectively represented direct challenges by “official” authorities in both the church and state to define the very concepts and definitions of “Orthodox” and “Russian” in the imperial era.

Interesting to know that the current Old Believers have a "Chreasters" contingent just like every other Christian church (those who only attend on Christmas and Easter).

Q: HOW did the Russians preserve the truth better than the mis intrepretation from the Greeks? We have come to understand there were mistakes in intrepretation from the various languages... How did that just slip through all those years? Where is this answered in a good reading sourcs for us present day? Or is there another video on this?

Thanks for this its absolutely fantastic! I was aware of a lot of this but it's great to have it so neatly summarised in one video and the images are great. Tragic how the Church can be so grievously wounded by such a vain and inconsequential decision. If only Patriarch Nikon had repented when confronted with the will of his flock. Things might've been so very different today. Oh well, glory to God in all things! 🙏☦️

How do Old Believers differ from Old Calendarist’s?

typical, modern Old Calderists are still "derived", liturgically speaking, from those clergy that gave in to the reforms that the Old Believers resisted.

No, dukhobors are quite a different entity. They rejected icons, clergy, and church rituals. The Old Believers, on the other hand, were very much concerned with ritual - in fact, they are often referred to as the Old Ritualists.

It was not Ekaterina that lifted the restriction on all believers, it was her husband, who she quickly overthrow. Catherine herself despised the old believers, her husband who was of a griffin bloodline sympathize it with the old believers, once he insisted on lifting a lot of the restrictions on them they quickly took care of him. The old believers were prosecuted, by church and state under the romanovs rule. Their prosecution continued through the Bolshevik revolution and communism, they took their worst criminals out of the prison in exchange for freedom for slaughtering the remnants of all believers who were already hiding in the wilderness and remote areas because of all the prosecution they face. They weren't bothering anyone, they we're minding their business and praising their God, but that irritated the demons to the extent that they had to send Inquisition to find them, torture them and burned them alive in their houses and churches. Most of the Rasian true history been suppressed and replaced by fake history under the control of Europe/German's.

@anastasiar9625 ...Wrong! It is not Europe or Germany that controls the propaganda of internecine hostility within Russia and towards Russia from the outside! Today, the owners of the dollar control this anti-Russian propaganda in the world! Having studied the history of the origin of the owners of the dollar, you will learn the truth about who controlled this anti-Russian propaganda in the past...Explanations: This is an ancient enemy of Russia, since the time of the Russian Prince Svyatoslav, who in the 10th century destroyed the state of the Khazar Khaganate with the main fortress of the Khazar Khaganate, which was called "Sarkel" - which means "White House" in Khazar

I understand why this change occured in the Church but the lengths of presecution of the faithful is barberic and does not belong in the Church. What a disgrace to Russian Orthodoxy. And those that committed suicide over it? There is some deep karma here for the Russian Orthodox Church ( which "karma" isn't a term acceptable). I am appalled how the Church of "true believers and right worship" responded to this over sight of our early fathers lack of correctness of interpretation.

Ra-sians Slavanii, one of the 4 Aryan tribes the Griffin Kingdom. After the reset of 1900s, most history is a lie including what you are saying. Any religion that slutters millions of people to convert them to their belief is a religion of Satan. I am a descendant of all believers, I know their history, I know their beliefs and I know what happened to our people. Their beliefs are my beliefs, I believe in God and the holy Trinity. I believe in the law of God. Our people do not kill, do not steal, and do not bound to foreign gods. Our God prohibits to make any man made changes to the word of God, we put God about everything including the pope, Kings and Queens. We honor the authority on earth, but we put God's law about everything, if the authority on Earth conflicts with God's law we will not submit. We will not condemn our soul in order to save our body, we fear God not people. They could kill our body but not our soul. And that they did, this slather over 26 million of all believers, specifically those of Slavic and Merovingian decent. What happened in the 300 year war against the old believers was nothing to do with religion but a political move to exterminate certain ethnic groups and the bloodline of Griffin Kingdom. Rasian been infiltrated and rule by outside source for centuries now, starting with the Romanovs, who were all of German descent and in bed with Catholic Church on their quest to rule the world through the Catholic Church. Satan was chain for a thousand years after the Christ Resurrection 2000 years ago, he's been free now for quite some time working to deceive the world and he did a great job. Just remember that Antichrist is not against religion, he is against the true Christ. He's jealous of God and he imitates God, to deceive people in order for them to worship him. Remember it says that he will come as an angel of light, and so he did, he is the counterfeit Christ.

Such a gross oversimplification!! I can’t believe that this is presented by a museum that ought to represent Russian history. First of all, this person’s knowledge of the Greek and Bulgarian church are next to nonexistent - at least three of the Metropolitans of Kiev were Bulgarians - Cyprianos and Gregorius - who were both of one family - the noble Tzamblak family and were both born in the Bulgarian capital of Tarnovo. And the Patriarch of Constantinople, who this presenter doesn’t even mention by name although he was the driving force - Joseph II, was Bulgarian by birth and the son of the Bulgarian tsar Ivan Shishman. Also, Isidore of Kiev was also most probably Bulgarian, as he a statement by Joseph II to Isidore explains. Just such a misunderstanding and misinformation of the Bulgarian and Greek Churches and the Council of Florence is terrible. Is this education? Kindly do better!
