Olancha Peak Trip Report

In this video, Bryan Feller provides a recent trip report for Olancha Peak with tips for new hikers. Olancha Peak is visible from Highway 395 near the town of the same name and stands at an elevation of 12,132ft. The trailhead for the hike is located past the town of Olancha at the Olancha Pass Trailhead. The trail gains about 3000ft in the first four miles and then levels off for about two miles before climbing again. Towards the end of the hike, there may be snowdrifts, especially earlier in the season. The last mile of the hike can be challenging due to snow and post-holing - depending on the season. The final quarter mile has a steep slope of about 50 degrees with solid talus. Bryan advises that while it may be a little scary for those who haven't hiked off-trail before, it is manageable. The hardest part of the hike is the last piece of elevation gain scrambling. Bryan mentions that they felt the effects of altitude at around 12,000ft. He suggests considering whether to do the hike as an overnight or day hike, as it is 21 miles with over 6500ft of elevation gain. While Olancha Peak may not be as exciting as other peaks in the Sierras, it offers plenty of water and camping spots along the Pacific Crest Trail.
