Ol Dirty Bastard On PAROLE(2003 VH1 SPECIAL)
Ойын-сауық
It’s safe to say that for virtually every moment from the time that Wu-Tang Clan became prominent around 1993 until his sad death in 2004, Ol’ Dirty Bastard-“Russell Jones” to the law enforcement community-was in some kind of legal trouble. He was convicted of second degree assault in 1993 and was arrested for failure to pay child support in 1997. A year later, he pleaded guilty to attempted assault on his wife and was also arrested for shoplifting. It goes on from there. In 2000 he was assigned to a court-mandated drug treatment facility but escaped-as a fugitive he met up with RZA and spent some time in the studio. In Philadelphia he was eventually captured. (DM previously reported on his endlessly interesting FBI file, released in 2012.)
After spending the next two and a half years in prison in New York, he was released on parole on May 1, 2003. Sensing an opportunity, ODB’s manager, Jarred Weisfeld, arranged for VH1 to have a crew follow ODB around for his release and the first few weeks out of jail. The end result was “Inside Out,” which can be viewed below. Actually, it’s a little unclear what this video is-IMDb.com lists the running time as 60 minutes over two episodes. This video isn’t that long, however. What I think this is is episode 1 of “Inside Out”-not sure there was an episode 2-followed by a brief remembrance section that likely doesn’t have anything to do with VH1. In any case, it’s wildly entertaining.

I’m there right now man. Family problems on top of it. No one comes by and visits or checks on me or anything. I live alone. Had one homeboy who doesn’t even live in my city anymore. Dude paid my electric bill, I didn’t even ask. I don’t get to see him, but man that’s a blessing. I’m doing bad, I know most can relate to being down this bad at least once in their life, but being made to cry because someone intervened when they didn’t have to, that’s nuts. People really don’t think about the impact they have on those around them, I don’t mean financially. Sometime I feel like it’s really just me and I’ll die alone, but homeboy made me feel like someone genuinely cared. Gave me some much needed motivation. Love your loved ones. Love your friends. You never know who needs it.

ODB's manager was one of the few of 'them' who was actually not trying to be a culture vulture. He did get his break in the industry due to certain ties. But bruv has really had a love for our art in America and the UK. Sadly many other culture vultures took advantage of ODB's release to get money, rather than covering him for love of ODB and/or our art and culture.

Patrick Cavanaugh That’s not true, they didn’t like him because he came at them the wrong way. “You were wrong, end of discussion.” That is no way to talk to anyone in business. Furthermore, it’s not wrong to say he doesn’t know the culture...someone who knew the culture in 2003 would recognize the value of the Rocawear brand and probably do a deal WITH THEM. After all, they were signed to Rocafella, the affiliate label. Instead, this brilliant manager saw fit to openly compete and argue with said record label, to which THEY ALREADY SIGNED. 🤦🏾♂️ It’s not a black-and-white thing, but he was culturally and entrepreneurially clueless.

Terrible manager. Negotiates a contract with a record label and then immediately beefs with them over an independent, competing clothing line he created. Only calms down to negotiate with the label when his artist forces him. Hides all of the incompetence behind turkey sandwiches and assistance for his mom.

I remember when I was a child. All I wanted to do was get as far away from the hood as possible. When I was a teenager, although I still wanted to get out, I started embracing the ghetto life. As an adult, I fucked around and got a good job that paid me enough to take care of my family, but I lost it because I had the street mentality instilled in me. On my road to redemption I've slept in cars, jail, homeless shelters, etc. I worked at McDonald's & places that paid less just to get a legit check. I've rode bikes in blizzards, walked hours to work. The whole 9. Today I make 6 figures & I always look back so I don't forget what it took to get here. The moral to the story is when you get a chance, take it. If you fuck that up and you get a second chance, thank God & make the most out of it, because you might not get a third.

Recently read that Jared kept his promise and made sure that all 7 of ODB's kids got equal parts of his royalties just like he wanted, and despite his wife trying to block that from happening for the 4 he didn't have with her. (The story leaves out that he was married & protects the kids from being part of the media fuc*ery) Jared came thru after his death heavy despite his inexperience & mistakes before....must give the man props for keeping his word & battling ODB's wife in court even to make sure all the kids got what their father intended them to receive & be taken care of. Props to ODB for making that priority very clear which was something he constantly talked about while in jail since he didn't think he was going to make it out. His is a heartbreaking but bittersweet legacy. RIP ODB

i'm a white dude who grew-up in a wisconsin town (where the population was a few thousand). i fell in love with hip-hop the first time i heard it. even though i leaned towards more underground/independent artists, DIRTY was my favorite by far. DIRTY was so different from all the other "mainstream/radio" crap at that time. i was 12yrs old when RETURN TO THE 36 CHAMBERS came out. from then until i was 18, every assignment in school which gave the freedom to choose the topic/subject, i chose DIRT McGIRT. had to write an essay on one of our heroes........i wrote about ODB. have to do an oil pastel portrait in art............ODB was the subject. i had to screen-print a t-shirt for some class...........i did a close-up picture of DIRTY with the word "dad" right above it. like i said, i loved hip-hop, but i didn't shed a tear when TUPAC or BIGGIE died. i was sad & angry as hell when ODB passed! that was back prior to any social media & all that..................i wonder if he'd still be alive if he knew how important/loved he was by people across the globe....? i wonder if he knew the full extent of his music........like when he was trying to break-into the music business, i wonder if he could've even imagined his art was going to help shape the life of some 12yr old white kid in rural wisconsin...?!? at least all his fans get the solace of knowing that BIG BABY JESUS is now kicking it with OG BABY JESUS up in heaven! peace. love.
