Oklahoma player's helmet gets ripped off and it costs him a TD

Фильм және анимация

During the college football game between Oklahoma and Oregon, a wacky play happened in the second quarter when an Oklahoma wide receiver Mario Williams caught a pass and broke free for a touchdown... except his helmet was ripped off by an Oregon defender right before he broke away. This resulted in the play being blown dead. Oregon was called for a 15 yard face mask penalty, but the touchdown did not count since the play is over once a player's helmet comes off. Oklahoma now has a 9-3 lead over Oregon in the 2021 Alamo Bowl.

@Eugene then they should change the rules to where they review it to see if he intentionally ripped off the helmet to prevent him from scoring or advancing which I think is what happened here. And since there were no other defenders around him it should be ruled a touchdown by default. Because he did technically score.

They could have given the OU player here a penalty for continuing to run without a helmet, which would have been a dead ball foul and effectively canceled the face mask penalty (but still given OU the yardage gained on the play). Good discretion on the refs for letting him run since there was nobody around. But it’s a good rule that encourages players to give themselves up when they lose their helmet, whether it was a foul for their helmet coming off in the first place or not.

Another irrational rule where no review can be allowed to impact the final decision. Wanting to stop a play when a player loses a helmet for safety’s sake is a good idea but if after a review it’s obvious there was no danger, like this, an officiating crew should be allowed to overrule. In fact, the rule actually encourages future ripping off of helmets by defenders in this situation.

Best case scenario is stop a touchdown. Additionally, should the helmet stay on and the runner scores, the penalty will be declined. It’s basically the same as DPI. If the QB is going for a long pass that is over 15 yards and the defender is able to interfere with the receiver, it is better for the defender to interfere and get a 15 yard penalty than leave any room for a pass completion.

In the case of a penalty like that on the defense, where the receiver is clearly not at risk of being touched again, the TD should have be awarded, especially for something like unnecessary roughness or a personal foul. I can see in other situations where if it comes off, sure the ball is dead. The player is responsible for their helmet being secured as well.

Something similar happened with NC State and Miami. Miami player muffed a punt and NC State recovered inside the Miami 10 yard line. Only problem was that the recovering player for NC State had his helmet ripped off a few seconds earlier by a blocker who didn't even know there was a fumble. They ruled the NC State player ineligible from the second his helmet came off so they awarded the ball to Miami even though they didn't recover it and never had possession. On top of that the personal foul penalty they called on Miami for ripping off the helmet was only like 5 yards as it was so close to the endzone already.

The difference in how refs ruled isn’t actually about the rule. It’s about who was reffing and how they decide to rule. The rule is necessary though because if someone was close to make a tackle as well they would potentially either A. Seriously injure the runner B. Get penalized for tackling the helmet less player C. Not be able to touch them making the runner essentially invincible I know reviewing it is an option people throw out there as a possibility but I think in the world of football it would be a liability Like on a roller coaster they tell you not to unbuckle until the cart comes to a complete stop even though it’s going like 2 mph and you are held down my the bar still and sitting so there’s no way you are going to really get hurt They still have it as a rule because it’s a liability What happens if this play happened, still no one around but he trips and breaks his neck...liability

In soccer, there's a rule called "play advantage." When a player got fouled (regardless if the player is in control of the live ball or not) and the ref sees a significance advantage in the play to the fouled team (say, a good chance to score), the ref will HOLD the call to the foul for a few seconds and let the fouled team to continue the play (if they choose to). If in the next few seconds the good chance is gone (for whatever reason), the ref will call the foul. If the ball is in play continuously (I'd say at least 5 seconds away from the foul), the foul will NOT be called anymore/forgotten, regardless of the outcome of the play. If it's soccer, the touchdown in the video will be counted, as it's a play advantage for the fouled team.

And they don't have to wear helmets, though there are now some choosing to I think.

Didn’t understand the college rules. Thought they had accepted the penalty as they took off the touchdown. Couldn’t hear it because I was in a bar. Man was I confused for awhile 😂😂

@@brandon737 so what I'm hearing is to win the superbowl just take whoever has the ball helmet off every play and offense will never be able to score cuz they'll just get flaged. Genius 😆

Miss the 60's and 70's when all men still played real grid-iron football.

Indeed. That's (60s & 70s)when I played football. This sort of thing happened every once in a while, a helmet coming off. But the play didn't stop until the whistle blew. My dad and father-in-law played in the 40s, leather helmets or none for some players. And what about Rugby...now that's real.

Simple rule change after the runner loses his helmet he is down with contact. No need to tackle him all the defense has to do is touch him. Gives him a chance to advance if he has an open lane

They changed this rule after Jason Whitten had that run against Washington or Philly when his helmet came off, up until then this was not even a thought.

No rule change because if the defender knows he is the last man that can make a tackle to prevent a touchdown then defenders are going to start removing helmets to end the play and take the penalty over getting scored on
