Really…. Their job is to save lives. That’s what our tax dollars pay them to do. Obviously the ambulance service is useless, therefore the other first responders MUST do what’s needed to save lives. It’s plain to see the fire chief with the face diaper on is a complete dipsh** and a 🤡, Fire him NOW and promote the man they disciplined to Chief…. And change that ridiculous law. People, stop allowing bureaucrats to run rampant over common sense and what is morally correct.

@@ferretyluv Thanks for the update. If anyone is interested, here's a snippet from a May 2022 press release from the Oklahoma state senate: "Legislation giving firefighters statutory authority to transport patients to the hospital in emergency situations has been signed into law. Senate Bill 1515, by Sen. Darrell Weaver, R-Moore, and Rep. Mike Osburn, R-Edmond, was signed by Gov. Kevin Stitt on Monday. "Weaver filed the legislation in response to a situation where an Oklahoma City firefighter was disciplined for his decision to drive a 3-year-old burn victim to the hospital in his fire truck after waiting 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. "SB 1515 will take effect Nov. 1, 2022." It's a shame that the state legislature had to pass a law because Oklahoma City Fire Chief Richard Kelley has no common sense, but at least now the legal authority to drive a burn victim to the hospital should be clear, even to a dummy.

It’s nice to know that he went above his pay grade to serve his community and many others have done the same. Thank you all for your compassion to the victims and their family. For the fire chief I just have to say to you, everyone can feel empathy, but compassion is true sign of the heart. Compassion is empathy in action. Punishing this man is not a right call. It really is time that we start over new cop shops with almost completely new staff - and no tolerance for this BS bully attitude we've allowed our cops to think they're entitled to. I'm a public school bus driver. A few years ago, in the pre-dawn blackness, I came across one of my kids (9th grade girl), who had slipped in the mud on her sidewalk, couldn't get up. Was sobbing in pain. Was recovering from KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY (sports injury) six feet tall, about 190 athletically built pounds. Grandma & Grandpa (she lives with them) couldn't BEGIN to lift her. I shut off my bus, popped the air brake, told my kids to "stay put". I lifted her, helped her hop to the front door, where grandpa had a walker ready. I trot back to the bus, my kids are CHEERING! YAY, Mr. J! You GO, Mr. J! I intentionally broke a number of "fire-able" rules that morning. A driver should NEVER leave the bus with kids on board. A driver should NEVER touch a kid. A driver should NEVER move an injured kid. Proper policy would have me stay in my seat, radio in to send EMS. Meanwhile, one of my kids would be sitting in the cold mud in the dark, sobbing in pain, as she & her grandparents would try to fathom why I wouldn't help her. I made the only choice I could live with. Worst case, I can get another job, I can't get another SOUL. Radioed in the basics of what happened. Thankfully, there was no "see office" note on my key hook. I'm praying for this fine man, this HERO. Wonder what the Chief would think if it was HIS daughter sitting in agony with no ride to the ER? The Chief is a world-class ASSHOLE.

Later when we came back we asked our neighbors if they came…. They didn’t. A seizure could mean so many deadly things. Stroke, heart attack, tumor, etc. and they never came. I felt so betrayed and disappointed. No nothing deadly was found in me. It turned out to be epilepsy. Meaning the seizures were gonna continue and they don’t know why. You can be the most qualified individual who ever walked thru their doors it won't matter. They don't want qualified they want a yes man. It resembles the last years of the Soviet system. @@fyrman9092 For the record, response backlogs were rampant during the height of COVID and, as I only recently learned, ambulances are required to remain with patients at the hospital until they are assigned a bed. Since beds were scarce at times, EMS response was burdened by these wait times. May not be the only reason but it must have been a contributing factor. Like any municipal service, if volume of need exceeds capacity to attend, things take longer. All first responder agencies were overburdened during COVID. In my city, I took to listening in (on Broadcastify) to their dispatch and it was hectic. Probably wasn't good for my mental health but I got a peek into what they went through. Sometimes it was call after call after call after call...

My son had pretty bad burns on his fingers due to grabbing a metal rod that was about 500 degrees. Sitting in the ER for over 30 minutes waiting for care was just heart wrenching. My son was 10, and he cried and cried (he's all good and healed with no problems because we got treatment right away) but I can't imagine a young girl with those extreme burns how much she must have been screaming. Those parents must have been in agony and being a firefighter he knew how burns work and how crucial it is to get treated. My ex was on the fire department and I know several firefighters, and they all would have done the same thing. He was taking care of his patient and being a human. If that was anyone else they would have been celebrated, and given accolades. But because he's a firefighter with rules he basically gets fired. I'm not for breaking the rules but I think that maybe there should be some exceptions when it comes to saving people and getting them the medical care they need immediately! They should change their policy and not just "discipline" people but look at how their rules are not keeping the public safe.

Good luck, just like with bad police, bad firefighters have a ton of union help available to them. A few years ago some clown on my city's FD attacked a 65-yo woman on a local hiking trail because she had the temerity to complain to him about his gaggle of unleashed dogs. Mofo was convicted of felony assault, yet somehow, he held onto his job, serving only a 30-day suspension. The POS department was too cowardly to fire a fireman _for an unprovoked, public, broad daylight physical attack on somebody's grandmother, instead hoping that one of the state ethics boards would pull his license and render him ineligible for his job, doing the hard work for them. To my knowledge, that hasn't happened. Lucky for him, there's no way McDonald's or Home Depot were going to match his $80K/yr salary and gold-plated public benefits. It's also pathetic, and completely undermines my faith in the institution. The fact of the matter is this: in modern-day America, if you need help, your best course of action is to call your insurance agent and get a claims adjuster out to you ASAP, because a lot of PDs and FDs are worthless at this point.

Retired FF/ Officer here. You do what you need to do to save a life, within your scope of training. Major Britt is medically trained, the scope of care provided is not in question. I feel it safe to assume that the person driving the fire apparatus was properly trained in operating said emergency vehicle. Fire Departments have Policies and Procedures that should be adhered to, however they can never cover all situations and require constant evaluation and adjustments. That was my job at the end of my fire service career, Deputy Chief, Chief of Operations. My opinion, from the information at hand, is that Major Britt made a decision, based on his knowledge, experience, and awareness of his agencies policies and procedures, and at most, counseled on department policy and procedures. The Policy and/or procedure should be re-evaluated and revised as necessary. The other members of the department should also be counseled on the results of the re-evaluation. Major Britt should also receive a valor award/ medal, a true first responder!!! I speak first hand from a similar situation our department responded to involving a new born. The transport unit assigned was 45 minutes away, while the closest transport unit was across the street with a non life threatening emergency, requiring a lift assist from our department. Due to that agencies Policy, that ambulance couldn’t leave that scene to come to us. Our new born patient only had minutes to live, we couldn’t leave to help the other transport unit across the street. The decision was made to transport in our department vehicle, to the hospital. Once the new born was at the hospital, we responded to help with the lift assist. We then returned to the hospital and helped the ER staff care and treat for the new born (small hospital with little pediatric equipment). The new born survived, no one disciplined, all offered critical incident stress counseling. We re-examined our policy and procedures, and spoke with all our staff reminding them that this situation was extremely rare and should be avoided if at all possible.

What type of infection control is there in the back of a fire truck? Is it washed down and disinfected after every run? How would the patient be secured in the vehicle? How would they monitor the patients vital signs? What would they do if the patients condition started to deteriorate? Do they have Iv lines, fluids etc to administer to the burn patient? Children’s systems can compensate incredibly well for a period of time when suffering from a traumatic injury, then they go down hill incredibly rapidly, is the back cab of a fire engine set up for dealing with that? There are very good reasons why we don’t transport patients in fire trucks or coo cars, it’s because they aren’t set up to do so. He got lucky this time, I understand why he did it, but I don’t agree with how he did it.

I am a retired fire officer and paramedic with over 30 years experience. This is a situation we are all facing more and more frequently since the EMS in the vast majority of jurisdictions is broken and the politicians have no intention of fixing it. The reasons are just about identical no matter where you live or work. Insufficient EMS assets, underpaid, overworked emergency medical personnel and the jurisdictions allowing constant abuse and over use of the 911 system by citizens are all contributing factors making up this problem. Now we dispatch fire engines to EMS calls....partly for the extra manpower since Medic units have had their staffing stripped from 3 EMS workers to 2. It is not unusual to have multiple EMS ambulances tied up running minor boo boos (that in no way warrant an ambulance or a medic unit ) or EMS units waiting for extended times at the ER to drop off their patient because the ER's are backed up and over flowing. The medical assets on the fire truck can attempt to stabilize and treat the patient, but wait times for ambulances for transport are often minutes or even hours away. The fire officer in these cases is left with two choices: wait and hope the patient does not die....or find an alternative way to get the patient to the ER. This presents a "no win" situation for the senior fire officer on the scene. If he stands by and does nothing...and the patient dies...his own fire department will throw him under the bus for not doing anything. If he transports the patient in the fire engine, police car or any other non-ambulance, the powers that be are going to discipline him as was done in this case. The Chief officers should have stood behind the Major for being proactive and innovative in getting the child to definitive medical care at the soonest opportunity. The child had bad burns. Had any of these burns been circumferential, one or more of her limbs could be in jeopardy. Had the source of the burns impacted her airway, she could have choked to death when the airway passages began swelling. In short...the Major's decision may very well have saved the child's life. A good Chief officer will stand behind his people when they make decisions that may be "contrary to the book" but result in the saving of a patients life. Bad Chief officers and Chief officers who worry about the career's, will throw their people under the bus every time something like this happens. Having been in Major Britt's shoes on more than one occasion, I salute his courage to make the hard decision and risk his career to save the patient's life. If we ever meet, I'd be honored to shake his hand, buy him a beer and tell him "job well done" The questions that should be asked are not why this Fire Officer risked his career to transport an injured child....but why is the EMS system this broken and what, if anything, are you big cheeses doing to fix it? I can damned well bet you won't like the answers the offer.

The politicians have no intentions of fixing it because they broke it. They took millions of dollars from the Private Ambulance companies to write the laws that took the transportation rights away from the Fire Department. I have seen it with my own two eyes. The fire department shows up, does all the work to stabilize the patient, and then have to wait for the for profit company to show up and get paid $10k for the taxi ride. My dad was haven't heart problems, and it took the local for-profit company 45 minutes to show up after the fire department. The captain said screw it, and they started loading my dad up, and were nearly ready to leave when the for-profit company finally arrived and blocked them in. They had the nerve to tell my dad, to get off the fire departments stretcher and get on theirs. Dude even yelled at the fire departments paramedic for trying to help, telling them to leave.

I don’t think a personal thing was the problem. Ambulance transport is a huge business and he made them lose at least 10k transporting that kid. If everyone were to do the same they will lose thousands of dollars a month. They disciplined him so that no one would dare make them lose money again. But probably some higher ups are benefiting from that sweet ambulance money too, so that’s why none of them are complaining and they are blaming it on “company policies”

Mayor Britt anyone would be proud to have you as a responder and your kind heart. You should have been given a award for your service! In my opinion it tells you the chiefs true moral character in charge of this fire department. Major Britt should be put in this type of position any fire department it would be a honor to have you. Never change your kindness and big heart for those that don’t have the same character I wonder if that had been the chiefs daughter and he wouldn’t have wanted the same response for her if policy would ever had been a issue then. What type of policy has a department who has a injured person no help arriving and would not help a citizen then I think we have a issue with not responding instead of providing help and making sure the safety of citizens. Outrageous!

I think the parents and the health, safety, and well being of a human being takes precedent over some ink on a page. We are people, we are humans. Some still believe we are God's children. If you expect a little girl to sit with second degree burns until a group of city officials can manage to get this poor little girl some help, you don't belong in any position of authority, over anyone, anywhere. Not even your own children or grandchildren.
