21:07 It was a thing in the game, it was not quite as direct as it is in the show, but there's an optional dialogue where Joel heavily implies he tried taking his life. The dialogue triggers when they come across a couple in a tub who had taken their lives. Ellie says, "Guess they took the easy way out", to which Joel says, "It ain't easy. For many it was better than letting a clicker or a hunter do it for them. Trust me, it ain't easy."
Ellie: So time heals all wounds does it? Joel: It wasn’t time that did it….. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I played this game 10 years ago and to this day it is one of the single greatest stories ever told. I remember debating with other gamers for over a year about if Joel made the right decision or not. The question of “You have a chance to save the world but the cost is that you lose the person you love the most in the world after already suffering that pain before”. The answer, the REAL answer, is that both Joel and Marlene made the wrong decision, because that decision should’ve been Ellie’s to make. In the Last Of Us (GAME) podcast Neil Druckman talks about how Joel and Marlene had no right to take that choice away from Ellie. She would’ve said yes, and then Joel would have no choice but to respect her wish. She wanted the deaths of all the people she had lost, Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, to mean something. Even if it cost her her life. And even though a small part of her knows in her heart that Joel was lying to her she feels that she can’t let herself believe that the only person she loves in the world took away her chance to save the world. Also I love that Ashley Johnson got to play Ellie’s mom Anna. It was a beautiful full circle moment that the woman who plays Ellie in the games played her mother in the show. And Lauren Bailey who plays Abby in Part 2 plays one of the nurses in the OR. And it sucks that even though we have to wait a couple more years for season 2, it will be worth the wait! Until then, Endure And Survive!
Can we talk about the Firefly who had one job to cover Ellie's ears and didn’t do it? One job! 😀

After that she prolly fired his incompetent ass, and by fired - i mean shot him in the leg while they were being chased by some infected
The addition of Joels story was great. Makes sense, adds to the story, and delivered wonderfully by Pedro.

Reminds me of a line from the game. I can’t remember exactly when but Ellie and Joel comes across a couple who committed self-alive’nt and Ellie says something like they took the easy way out and Joel says they must’ve chosen it over death at the hands of clickers or raiders and then says, “trust me, it ain’t easy.”
The way Joel looks only at Ellie while she's feeding the giraffe, dunno if the dude's ever seen a giraffe before himself but he doesn't care because his kid is smiling and giggling and it's way better than anything else 😭
Amazingly done final episode 🤩 Ashley and Laura getting roles here was awesome and so glad they got to be a part of it all. Seeing Joel just brutally go through the hospital too was amazing, really sets up the next chapter. And a real Giraffe 🦒
What a perfect show. It didn't disappoint, Bella and Pedro nailed their characters and every single episode made me cry with so many beautiful and hard moments. I loved watching your videos after each episode. i'll miss that.
top-quality television show with a strong narrative and very compelling characters. the best live-action recreation of a videogame. ❤🔥 Super excited for Season
From the moment Joel met Ellie, it was his destiny that he would protect her, no matter the cost. Not death, not even the human race being possibly saved was going to keep Joel from protecting Ellie.
Loved it. Of course he would protect his "daughter" no matter what.
@justinbaileyASU

of course, but he is doing it for himself, not for her. It's a selfish act. he doesn't care about what she actually wants anymore than the Fireflies do.
Also: if they had just given Ellie the choice and both of them time to process it, Joel would probably have eventually let go.
yeah i agree with you 100. Joel and the Fireflies were both wrong. They should have explained the full situation to Ellie and let her decide. But I also think people asking if Joel "did the right thing" or not is a useless question. Joel did the only thing he could. He didn't really choose. He could not lose another daughter. He couldn't fail to save someone again. He simply did the only thing that he could.
Like watching Mando come back for Grogu 😎
"It wasn't time that did it"... I'M NOT OKAY! 😭😭
You could almost say that Ashley playing Ellie's mother is the show's way of her passing the torch on to Bella. Also, to answer your question about the giraffe, it is real, it was confirmed in the behind-the-scenes.
The Fireflies were never going to give Ellie a choice, That's why she was inmediately put under. Marlene saw herself how strong-willed Ellie's mom was. Marlene was 100% not taking the chance of Ellie saying no. I love these story so much. TLoU is a greta tale; it just saddens me, how the underlying idea was missed by many fans who then played the 2nd game only to miss the point again.

This is what gets me when people act like the Fireflies had the moral high ground because "Ellie wanted to help". No one is right here, to me that's the whole point. This story isn't about a good guy and a bad guy, it's about humans, and humans are never going to make objective choices because we are incapable of being objective in any given situation.
@clarkmichaels822

I think that's the great irony of the conclusion. Marlene didn't know Ellie so she didn't want to take the risk of Ellie saying no. Joel does know Ellie so he doesn't want to tell her what he did because he knew Ellie would've said yes (which is confirmed in TLOU2). Both of them didn't give her a choice. Marlene for her love for humanity, Joel for his love for Ellie.

I thought the same thing, about Elli not getting a choice, being put into surgery without her consent.
Since a lot of us ask about Joel, what I want to know is why Marlene did what she did. She mentioned something about not being able to do anything about the fact that Ellie will possibly die after the surgery. Why?
12:00 I totally agree. By the way I cried at every f***ing point you've cried in the reaction. I was one of those people who was incredibly skeptical about the casting. But I was convinced within a few scenes. The casting is great. Bella especially wears me out. The way she portrays fear is traumatizing. I can still hear the scream in my ears when Henry shot himself and her reaction to her bite, her speech to Joel when he wanted to leave her to Tommy. Sensational! Ellie has been my favorite female character since I played the game, and Bella has further strengthened my connection to the character
Last year brought us Arcane. This year we were graced with Vox Machina and Last of Us. Game to screen adaptations are crushing it. And us in the process.
In the end, the Fireflies were no more committed to personal freedom than FEDRA. They denied Ellie's body autonomy because they had decided her life was worth less than theirs, so they didn't have to have her consent to kill her and use her body.

It's the same thing, our right to survive is greater than your right to survive. I never claimed that he was a hero. So who in the series did Joel kill who didn't make a conscious effort to kill either Joel or Ellie. Deciding to kill someone is a choice, defending one's self doesn't require you to allow some one else to kill you. Did the men who attacked them in KC have a choice? Yes they could have just let them pass through. Did the old man sniper have a choice? Yes, he could have just put the gun down and sat still for an hour. Did the man who attacked Joel and Ellie outside the College have a choice? Of course he did but he was looking for someone to eat. Did the three men who came to kill injured Joel have a choice? Yes, they could have said let's not try to track down the man and the little girl since we still have bodies hanging in the bait shop we can eat. Why did he kill the Fireflies? Because they had already decided that their lives were more important than Ellie's and they would continue to look for her. Body autonomy includes not being killed to feed hungry people, or being killed without your consent in a medical experiment. There was no evidence that the surgery would have provided a cure, it was just the doctor's belief, and they obviously never made an attempt to find a less invasive approach to discovering why she was immune.
This was a great series, unlike anythink I have ever seen. Good for Joel and Ellie. Thank you for another entertaining reaction.
I knew you would love the giraffe scene ❤
Talk about a morally ambiguous ending. On one hand, I get it. Humanity took away what mattered most to Joel and after finding something that close in Ellie again, he wasn't going to let it happen again. I don't know what it's like to be a a father but I would like that someday and having to put myself in Joel's shoes, I'd probably do the same? Not to mention, the Fireflies weren’t giving her much of a choice in the matter. But then again, neither was Joel. It was still a…..selflessly selfish choice that not only doomed the entire world but robbed Ellie of whatever hope she had left for it as well as the choice to choose. It might be refreshing to some people, seeing them finally be together in this "new beginning" but keep this in mind: it's based on a lie. All of it.

This was done so beautifully this show was amazing. Here's to season 2 🍻
I played the game in 2013 when it came out, and I love how people are talking about the end of this season the same way people debated about the game. My personal view of Joel's choice hasn't changed. Neither the fireflies or Joel gave Ellie a voice to express her own choice. However, Ellie is still in fact a 14 year old child suffering from PTSD and obviously based on her reactions at the beginning of the episode she wasn't in her right mind to make an end-of-life decision. She deserved to live her life until she was a full grown adult capable of making that decision for herself. Joel ultimately made the right decision for Ellie's benefit, even if he damns the world in the process.
The thing is they didn't know for a fact that the cure would work. They were going to kill Ellie on a hunch. And as far as Marlene assuming Ellie would still go along with it knowing that she would die and they weren't 100% sure it would be worth it, her not telling Ellie that beforehand proves even she had doubt. Joel absolutely did the right thing.
@alice45-fgd-456drt

Agreed. Maybe they would've succeeded in being the first to make a cure, even though creating vaccines against fungal infections has never succeeded. For me the question then becomes, if humanity is this comfortable killing children on the off chance that they might provide scientific benefit, is it worth saving? There was no testing done, no other options were considered before deciding on chopping up her brain, and she wasn't even told about it before she was drugged. Doesn't sound very humane to me.

@@bugballs2211 In the last part of The Last of Us, Joel kills all the fireflies and saves Ellie but by doing so he may have doomed humanity by ending the possibility of a cure being made, making the ending bittersweet and morally ambiguous. The thing is, Joel didn't really done nothing wrong, and saving Ellie was the right choice, here are my reasons: 1 - The doctors would remove Ellie's brain to try to create a vaccine, but that's not how vaccines works, a vaccine is a tamed version of a pathogen that "teaches" your body to defend against it, to do a vaccine you need to use the pathogen in small quantities or a modified version of it, Ellie is immune to it, you don't create vaccines from the immune system, that's called a serum, and it works differently, a serum is used when someone comes in contact with a desease and it contains a series of antibodies that fight the infection, but it doesn't make anyone immune. So what they were trying to do was pointless; 2- Even if the doctors know what they were doing, it was a wild shot a with no guarantee that it would work; 3- Even if a vaccine was sucessfully made they wouldn't save the world, the world was destroyed 20 years ago, society collapsed and was rebuilt agin on a new way, and everyone already new how to deal with it, also the greatest threat were not even the cordyceps fungus anymore, it was the infected (that the vaccine couldn't do nothing about) and the crooked humans that walked the earth. Besides that, the fireflies had no way to distribute the vaccine worldwide, not even in a national level. So I believe what Joel did in the end was the right thing, the fireflies was an extremist group that was willing to do anything not to save the world, but to prove their point, even kill an innocent girl under a delusional precept. TL;DR, you're wrong

I love the last of us so much I made so many friends playing the multiplayer the show is very great as well
That was an actual giraffe. It wasn't CGI.
Joel didn't follow the most important post apocalypse rampage rule--no witnesses.
I can definitely see how people would disagree about Joel's decision. It was very much MEANT to be an incredibly contentious part of the game, however there was one group in early game-testing who backed Joel's choice 100% and that was all the parents. Without exception. Otherwise among testers the choice was pretty 50/50 between would they do the same or not.
Also, even if they had asked Ellie before hand (and we ignore the fact that they WOULD have done the procedure even if Ellie said 'no' because they're not gonna let, what they consider humankinds last chance, just walk out) it still wouldn't have been a fair choice. How would you be expected to choose between yourself and the rest of humanity, especially as a child? Even if you rationalized that the rest of humanity do not have any claim to your life, it'd still be some world record level survivor's guilt if you said no.
Joel lost Sarah in his birthday, Ellie lost her mom on her birthday. They were always meant to be together 🥲
Even if what Marlene says is true I doubt they could replicate the results for a cure
It was real, obviously the background wasn't because they couldn't remove it from it's enclosure. The making of is a must watch. P.S. when you said that he made the right decision to not kill the nurses, I was thinking "maybe not"
Laura Bailey is here too, as a nurse ;)
12:59 yes we know, that will create issues later 😅
Hi Louise hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤️
this episode is so heavy especially if you know what's coming
Marlene and the Fireflies learned the hard way why informed consent is such an important law. They really should have gotten Ellie and Joel's permission before trying to play the apocalypse version of Operation in a young woman's head.
I think that when Anna cut the umbilical cord with the knife she had just killed one of the infected ones, at that point something from the dirty knife went into the umbilical cord and went from there to Ellie. The bite on Anna's leg wouldn't have enough time to reach Ellie, but cutting umbilical cord with dirty knife yes.

Im still mad at joel lying to ellie, tho. She is too smart to not figure out he is lying, and it ruins their trust.
There’s no “right” answer…..it’s all about perspective. That’s what makes the game and the show so great. That being said, even if the Fireflies did successfully make a vaccine, it’s too late to save the world because there’s no global infrastructure anymore. The only people that would get the vaccine would be other Fireflies or they’d use it to get people to join them. They would never give it to FEDRA members or any citizens in the QZ who supported them. The vaccine would just be another tool to help them win their war.
The episode length was correct. They could have made it longer, but it would have been padding.
What controversy? If it came down to my kid needs to die in order to save the world, fuck that, the world had a good run. You ain’t taking my kid. I totally understand the decision Joel made here.

I really see how the letter from Bill gave Joel the motivation for the killing of Fireflies. And God help those motherfuckers who are in our ways... On the other side, why the Fureflies need to do surgery A.S.A.P? Why not treat Joel with the goodness he deserved for his work to bring Ellie to them. I believe if they peacefully talked to Ellie and Joel and in the end Ellie will want to sacrifice herself, Joel will get a peacefull goodbye with Ellie. And all mandkind can have a potential cure. Eventhough I really doubt that only one doctor can do it in this kind of post-apocaliptic world. Usually the research teams for creating a cure or vaccine is very big and they have modern machinaries... Apart from that, if I'm being asked about is what Joel did right or wrong? I will definitely answer with: it depends on what I am attributed to when being asked the question. If I am asked as a father who will loose a daughter through the process, then I will answer it is right. But if I am a doctor when I was aksed then my answer is Joel is very wrong in dooming mankind to eternal post-apocalyptic world
I'd do the same thing as Joel did as well. I haven't played either game. They didn't even give Ellie a choice. Ellie was thinking she'd donate some blood then leave with Joel. I don't blame Joel at all.
