Ok, one more Star Wars video: The Prequels

Ойындар

I think it'd be great to see a new set of Prequels that better explores the downfall of the Jedi. Something with the mythic dimension of the original movies.
Which is actually what I thought we were getting. WOW was I wrong!

Even for lore, they're pretty lame. Like the mysterious Clone Wars, oh, what was that ancient conflict that's been teased since the very first movie but has never been expanded upon? Oh it was just a bunch of clone soldiers fighting a bunch of droids in a secession war. Just such a boring and lifeless idea.

I mean what else did you think it was going to be? A unlimited supply of Droids and an unlimited supply of clones, both smashing into one another as the jedi are slowly culled and corrupted till the land finally fell to darkness.

Something cooler that uses the idea of cloning for something more than just infinite soulless husks? Clones of extinct beasts being unleashed into the galaxy? Evil clones of famous jedi or sith being created to lead an army? A conflict where the clone-using side keeps using more and more imperfect clones as they're losing?

I mean I think the droids vs clones idea is a really good one. Star Was EU stuff certainly was able to use it to amazing effect. I think the major problem with the prequels is there's a good story in there, but its lost under how much Lukas's world building, clunky dialogue and pointless scenes and storylines.

Note that I left comments ON for this one, so this is your opportunity to say I missed the point, the Last Jedi is really about Failure (which, to a certain extent I agree with, since I think they failed to make a good movie) or they're about Letting The Past Die, in other words...the villain's thesis statement (what). Or that I think about this too much or whatever. Knock yourself out.

We should think more, not less. I finally got a chance to see the Last Jedi. Most of my friends hated on it pretty hard which might have led me to be more forgiving than if I had saw it opening night, expectations and all that. And while I agree with you pretty much on every point you made in the last video, I still think I like it more than Episode 7, which felt somewhat paint-by-numbers. For all the faults of 8, I think it's at least trying to say something or push the mythos forward (even if I disagree with that direction). I'm excited for the direction of Kylo Ren, which is something that I couldn't say before this movie.

I would have liked to have commented in support of your analysis on that last Star Wars video, but you definitely made the right choice to not allow comments, the twitter arguments about TLJ have gotten pretty ugly. The idea that it’s about failure is fine, there’s the nucleus of a great film in that idea... if it had been executed better. My problem is that none of the characters appear to learn anything from their failures so the movie just felt like a dirge of people making constant mistakes for no real reason.

The Last Jedi is about loosing the Star Wars franchise to the millennials... But my GenX 2 cents anyways: I think the big mistake they made is they should have let Leya die instead of Luke... Are we going to get a CGI Leya in Star Wars 9? The whole audience is going to look for those CGI glitches in that movie, ruining the entire episode no matter if it will be a masterwork. It will be creepy no matter what they will come up with... :(

The fundamental sound-producing element of a modular synthesizer is a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). When you plug in a VCO it just starts generating a tone so you need an envelope filter to play a distinct note. So I assume that the M32 was just running an open oscillator. The M32 could boot up this way or maybe Matt had the filter off.

I still think your examination of the Obi Wan-Maul dual is correct, it just doesn't have the series defining fate VS destiny theme. Instead the theme is the Jedi will die because they are not willing to embrace passion as Luke eventually does. The prequel jedi order fail because they are passive, waiting for guidance from outside sources. They never decide "this is whats right" or "I cant let my friend get hurt" the only Jedi who do this are Anakin and Obi Wan. I think as flawed as the prequels are the main message is that (like Luke being Vader) Anakin is Luke searching for a way to save his friends, the only difference is the Jedi forbid love from Anakin, they make him more machine than man. so in order to save his friends and the republic he is left with the dark side

  • @drakeford3238

    @drakeford3238

S Clair The problems with the Jedi are something the prequels try to discuss, they're just bad at it. I will also note that Qui-gon's case is legitimately just losing the fight to a younger, faster opponent. Qui-gon is the representative of conscience in the debate between Conscience and Code, and the writing of his character does a very good job of that- it's just that the movie surrounding it isn't up to the task of exploring this. In a better Star Wars, this would be more clear, but it isn't well done here, and you're left to try and pull the pieces together. My complaint with Matt's interpretation (and I think he would agree) is that it's too focused are what he wanted the Prequels to do, and ultimately missed what they were trying (albeit, often failing) to do.

Samuel Brunkow Absolutely - Weird Al wrote that from a story outline he was given before the movie was released, and from it he gave us an epic, moving tale from Obi-Wan’s perspective, centering him as the film’s missing protagonist. Many of the pieces of a great Star Wars movie were there, but hese films are made or broken in the editing room. I wish we could see what Marcia Lucas could have made from the raw footage.

Christ, i could listen to Matt talk about star wars for days. I like listening to other people who's points let me perceive stories from another viewpoint. Challenging and analyzing your own view points constantly is the only way to achieve personal growth. I think the biggest failure of the recent star wars movies is that Disney is too afraid to reach out. They're too timid to truly push into unknown star wars territory, always fluttering around known material, afraid to go in the deep end. Yes, it's dangerous in the deep end. That's where the awesome swimming takes place though.

I just rewatched TPM the other day and I loved it, always have, always will. If you try to fit Christian allegory into the story, it will not fit, because that isn't at all what it's about. If you look at the film within the larger context, however, it all makes sense. The Jedi were deeply flawed people, who had lost their sense of "balance." They were all Yin and no Yang. This is why Kenobi was able to defeat Maul, not because he fought with emotion but because he allowed himself to feel, ie, he balanced the Light and Dark sides of the Force within himself. That being said, Qui-Gon was, at the time of the PT, the most balanced of the Jedi. He was more attuned with the "Living Force," which is why he showed the most compassion. Freeing Anakin and tampering with the dice wasn't a violation of fate, but a fulfillment of it---it was an act of compassion that the Jedi lacked. Notice that Kenobi would have likely abandoned Anakin to his fate, as he had no desire to save Jar Jar. When Qui-Gon died, Anakin lost the only teacher that could have steered him toward balance. It was the dogmatic, Light-focused Jedi Council that failed Anakin, simultaneously creating the means of their own downfall. This is not simply conjecture. It's touched upon numerous times throughout the PT. Both Yoda and Dooku talk about how the Jedi have lost their way. This beautifully sets up the OT, for when Luke refuses to strike down his father. Notice how both Yoda and the Emperor urge him to kill Vader. He chooses, instead, the middle path and brings balance to the Force. This is again mirrored in TLJ, when Luke tells Rey that it was hubris for the Jedi to reject the Dark Side, ie, their emotions and their compassion. If you look at the PT in the way Lucas intended, not as a Christian allegory but as a Taoist/Buddhist allegory, you may find more to appreciate.

I agree with this. It's not surprising to me that Matt would disagree, given his preference for Middle Ages & Camelot-like myth. Both are interesting lenses through which to see these movies, but balance is such a massive part of Taoism (and not of Fate/Destiny/Grail), that the allegory seems more natural to me.

Very well said. I have, and always will say, the prequels have the best story in Star Wars mired with the worst execution. It’s amazing how ambitious Lucas was trying to be. Unlike the sequels, which are the best executed with the worst story. I can look past bad execution. I can’t look past a bad story. Star Wars is mythological story telling. The sequels are not. And TLJ doubled down on that. At least force awakens is a good adventure story. TLJ is neither good mythological story telling, nor is it a good adventure story.

Maybe it's like playing Fiasco then. You can either do everything safe and by the book "the right way," or rebel completely, flying by the seat of your pants with an impossible plan that succeeds against all odds, but trying to straddle that line brings only ruin. Quigon tried to cheat destiny and make exceptions while otherwise still following the rules. And as the Good Book puts it: "I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! But because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I will spew you out of My mouth!"

Someone did storyboard rewrites of the prequel trilogy on KZread and genuinly made it good. Obi Wan was the main character, Anakin's romance was a TWIST SURPRISE in Revenge of the Sith, Dooku and Maul had much more involvement, and it all generally made more sense in context of the original trilogy. On another note, I've seen it postulated that using the Force to expedite one's goals is the essence of the Dark Side. Luke used it to choke to guards rather than negotiate his way past. Qui-Gon used it to control the dice rather than trust the Force to guide the roll. Ben Kenobi mind tricking is an example of the opposite: it takes more time to twist perceptions and influence thoughts than it does to, say, punch or shoot a storm trooper. Thus, he is the iconic jedi. The Dark Side is based in selfishness and the quick, easy path.

In my version of the prequels, Qui-Gon cheating at the dice game is the first domino in Anakins path to becoming Vader. Anakin is given no choice to leave Tatooine (in my version he loses the pod race and Qui-Gon decides to break his end of the bargain and effectively steals Anakin). He is treated as a machine long before he becomes one. Qui-Gon and the jedi use him fulfill their religious prophesy and justify their path as righteous. The Sith use him to take control of the galaxy. Obi-Wan uses him as a model to measure his own superior virtue against. He exists only as a tool of the force and nothing more. The only people who treat him with any sort of humanity are Jar Jar and Luke. Jar Jar's death in the battle of Naboo kills the last hope he had for compassion, and then Luke facilitates his redemption.

I'm read through Matthew Stover's Revenge of the Sith novelization. I'm going to say this: For me, Stover does a really good job of how Sidious manipulates Anakin. Anakin's thoughts as he learns he kills Padme was done really well. For me, its so much better than the movie. I like the prequels a lot more than your average person, but Stover does a great job. Not perfect, as some dialogue is not-so-fantastic - but really, really well. Apologies if unwelcomed. What Sidious said to Anankin when manipulating him, his philosophy on the Jedi and Sith, was really good and made fair amount of sense to not only Anakin In-universe, but to I myself as a reader - to me, in my humble opinion, at the very least. I truly liked Vader's thoughts as he learns he killed Padme. The "Nooooooo!!!!" scream is not in the novel, and it seems Padme genuinely died at Anakin's hand gradually. I recommend Matthew Stover's book to you and the make of this video not only because it does almost (I say "almost" because SOME of the dialogue is not so fantastic, but great other than that.) everything better, gives insight onto the situations and the character's thoughts, but above all else: You get to see WHY Anakin does the things he does. To me, Sidious' words to Anakin and his manipulation of him makes a fair amount of sense to me as a reader and fan of Star Wars. At one point in the novel, Anakin is suspecting that there is someone between him and Padme, so he squeezes her shoulders (Not enough to kill her, or crush her shoulders, but it still hurt a little bit) , she says "you're hurting us", and he stops, as she explains she is pregnant. That is all I'm going to tell you; wouldn't want to spoil it all. Here is an excerpt: 'Anakin was barely paying attention; in his mind, he was already leaving the Council Chamber, riding the turbolift to the archives, demanding access to the restricted vault by authority of his new rank-"You will attend the meetings of this Council," the Korun Master said, "but you will not be granted the rank and privileges of a Jedi Master." "What?" It was a small word, a simple word, an instinctive recoil from words that felt like punches, like stun blasts exploding inside his brain that left his head ringing and the room spinning around him-but even to his own ears, the voice that came from his lips didn't sound like his own. It was deeper, darker, clipped and oiled, resonating from the depths of his heart. It didn't sound like him at all, and it smoked with fury. "How dare you? How dare you?" Anakin stood welded to the floor, motionless. He wasn't even truly aware of speaking. It was as if someone else were using his mouth-and now, finally, he recognized the voice. It sounded like Dooku. But it was not Dooku's voice. It was the voice of Dooku's destroyer. "No Jedi in this room can match my power-no Jedi in the galaxy! You think you can deny Mastery to me?" "The Chancellor's representative you are," Yoda said. "And it is as his representative you shall attend the Council. Sit in this Chamber you will, but no vote will you have. The Chancellor's views you shall present. His wishes. His ideas and directives. Not your own." Up from the depths of his furnace heart came an answer so far transcending fury that it sounded cold as interstellar space. "This is an insult to me, and to the Chancellor. Do not imagine that it will be tolerated." Mace Windu's eyes were as cold as the voice from Anakin's mouth. "Take your seat, young Skywalker." Anakin matched his stare. Perhaps I'll take yours. His own voice inside his head, had a hot black fire that smoked from the depths of his furnace heart. You think you can stop me from saving my love? You think you can make me watch her die? Go ahead and Vaapad this, you-"Anakin," Obi-Wan said softly. He gestured to an empty seat beside him. "Please." And something in Obi-Wan's gentle voice, in his simple, straightforward request, sent his anger slinking off ashamed, and Anakin found himself alone on the carpet in the middle of the Jedi Council, blinking. He suddenly felt very young, and very foolish. "Forgive me, Masters." His bow of contrition couldn't hide the blaze of embarrassment that climbed his cheeks.' And probably the part I like the most: 'This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker, forever: The first dawn of light in your universe brings pain. The light burns you. It will always burn you. Part of you will always lie upon black glass sand beside a lake of fire while flames chew upon your flesh. You can hear yourself breathing. It comes hard, and harsh, and it scrapes nerves already raw, but you cannot stop it. You can never stop it. You cannot even slow it down. You don't even have lungs anymore. Mechanisms hardwired into your chest breathe for you. They will pump oxygen into your bloodstream forever. *Lord Vader? Lord Vader, can you hear me? * And you can't, not in the way you once did. Sensors in the shell that prisons your head trickle meaning directly into your brain. You open your scorched-pale eyes; optical sensors integrate light and shadow into a hideous simulacrum of the world around you. Or perhaps the simulacrum is perfect, and it is the world that is hideous. *Padmé? Are you here? Are you all right? *you try to say, but another voice speaks for you, out from the vocabulator that serves you for burned-away lips and tongue and throat. "Padmé? Are you here? Are you all right?" I'm very sorry, Lord Vader. I'm afraid she died. It seems in your anger, you killed her. This burns hotter than the lava had. "No … no, it is not possible!" You loved her. You will always love her. You could never will her death. Never. But you remember … You remember all of it. You remember the dragon that you brought Vader forth from your heart to slay. You remember the cold venom in Vader's blood. You remember the furnace of Vader's fury, and the black hatred of seizing her throat to silence her lying mouth- And there is one blazing moment in which you finally understand that there was no dragon. That there was no Vader. That there was only you. Only Anakin Skywalker. That it was all you. Is you. Only you. You did it. You killed her. You killed her because, finally, when you could have saved her, when you could have gone away with her, when you could have been thinking about her, you were thinking about yourself … It is in this blazing moment that you finally understand the trap of the dark side, the final cruelty of the Sith- Because now your self is all you will ever have. And you rage and scream and reach through the Force to crush the shadow who has destroyed you, but you are so far less now than what you were, you are more than half machine, you are like a painter gone blind, a composer gone deaf, you can remember where the power was but the power you can touch is only a memory, and so with all your world-destroying fury it is only droids around you that implode, and equipment, and the table on which you were strapped shatters, and in the end, you cannot touch the shadow. In the end, you do not even want to. In the end, the shadow is all you have left. Because the shadow understands you, the shadow forgives you, the shadow gathers you unto itself- And within your furnace heart, you burn in your own flame. This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker. Forever …'

I was 1 when I saw Phantom Menace in the theatre, and I saw all three at the cinema. I think a big part about people hate is that it showed the myth. It showed what the Clone Wars were, it showed the Republic, it showed the turning of Darth Vader. I never had that as part of the myth, so it was never tainted for me. (The shitty writing and directing is probably a pretty big factor too.)

I personally think a “true fan” is someone who enjoys/ doesn’t enjoy the source material and doesn’t care if other people agree. Live and let live. I don’t mind the special editions, but I’m not gonna say they’re better. I want to be able to watch what I watch and talk to people without being harshly judged. That’s just me though.

Most of the acting was actually pretty good. When you take Hayden Christensen, and don’t force him to say clunky dialogue, he’s actually good at conveying the emotions needed.

I feel like I'm one of the few people that appreciates you posting your videos this late, helps me get through the long nights of Campaign Prep work. Anyway, I agree with most of what you said here Matt, but I do believe that you were wrong in saying that your original thoughts about the Phantom Menace were wrong. Art is a subjective medium, and as much as we hate to admit it the prequels are still art, and what you had gotten out of it made sense with your interpretation, even if the movie was a trainwreck in reality. Anyway, good video as always Matt looking forward to whatever you have planned next.

The reason many people think the prequels are bad, in my analysis, is quite a tragic one. It's the same reason that makes many people hate the Star Wars special editions. There is a discrepancy between what George Lucas likes about Star Wars and what most fans of Star Wars like about Star Wars, so the creator is out of tune with his fandom. George made the Prequels Star Wars as he liked it, not Star Wars as fans and producers had envisioned it for him when they took the project out of his hands originally. There is a famous artist, Marcel Duchamp. He started out as a cubistic painter, trying to emulate the works of Picasso and his compatriots to make cubism include the dimension of movement. His _Nude Descending a Staircase, no. 2_ was meant to be this new form of cubism. Instead, it sparked controversy. People thought it showed some sort of futurist machinery. That is when Marcel Duchamp became a genius, as instead of trying to explain his intentions, he decided to give the people what they saw in his work, and made his next painting exactly what people thought the first one was.

I think this is the actual beauty of Star Wars. For some it's about the mythos, for others it's about the good space battles and light sabre fights, or maybe the thrill of the adventure, or even the romance. Maybe this is true about all art, but I feel Star Wars does one thing right if nothing else, which is giving people something to enjoy through their own interpretation. Some people like the "Star" part, others like the "Wars" part.

The only reason to watch Phantom menace is for the final battle against Darth maul and listening to Duel of the fates, honestly one of the best pieces of music in the entirety of star wars. Episode 2 is an okay star wars film if you only watch the Obi-wan bits. Otherwise, it is a great film to watch if you plan on getting drunk and making fun of it. Revenge of the Sith is honestly a pretty good film all things considered. It has some flaws, but it really does feel like the grand space opera that star wars is supposed to be. Maybe it's just childhood nostalgia, but I remember being absolutely blow away by the final fight on Mustafar. The score, the fight choreography, and (I'm sure people will disagree with me) Ewen McGregor's &Hayden Christensens performances were great. It remains my favorite star wars movie to this day

Yeah, gotta say that your earlier self that said "Qui-Gon believes in the uttermost rightness of the Jedi", may have missed some things. It has been shown in comments from Obi-Wan in the prequel movies, as well as later in Star Wars The Clone Wars, that Qui-Gon did not agree with many teachings that the Jedi Council held, and even went off of what could be called "the path" that was held to be "the right way" according to the Jedi, as he followed The Living Force more than the Jedi teachings. A great theory is that "Duel of the Fates" is not about Maul vs Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan, but actually deciding who would teach Anakin. Maul was defeated in that fight, but the Dark Side won the Duel of the Fates, because Qui-Gon, who would have taught Anakin according to the Living Force, died, and so it fell to Obi-Wan, who was not prepared to teach and guide the young Anakin, to raise him.

As a professional writer, such as yourself, I enjoy listening to your own opinions about the movies, even if I don't agree with all your points. I role play and DM in a Star Wars setting almost all the time. I've used what you shared in your "running a campaign" series and applied those concepts in that setting (which have worked out quite nicely!). Looking forward to the background video! It's something I appreciate when my players put time into and it's great working off their character's background to influence what happends in our sessions. But at the same time I feel like you have to make your background an "unfinished chapter" meaning that it has not been resolved. You could have a background that is a closed case, but then it's harder for the DM to make that relevant during play. This is more of a lore approach I think. Then again some players I have met don't mind this at all.

Episode 8 redeems the prequels for me. If nothing else, it shows how difficult it is to follow up the monolithic Original Trilogy. Midichloreans, Darth Maul as a one shot clown villain, "That's so wizard, annie!". All of it. I can accept it all, maybe not as good star wars, but as star wars. Episode 8 just isn't star wars.

I heard one writing critic say it best about SW: TLJ, "If AFW is a love letter to Star Wars, TLJ is hate mail." It felt aggressively anti-Star Wars. Jar Jar and all the prequel madness was written with love in an attempt at FUN. SW: TLJ was something else entirely. Luke Skywalker is a mess who can't even drink a glass of green milk without slobbering it all over his beard. I'm not sure that even deserves a critique.
