Beyond friendly, Milchek is genuinely nurturing to the severed. This makes the torture sessions he conducts in the Break Room that much more unsettling. Milchek is a capable livestock tender. His approach to care of the severed is a mix of intimate compassion and cold discipline demanded of him in highest and best service to the corporation.

I find the idea that homosexuality isn't considered weird or "other" but just normal among the innies fascinating, seeing how they resemble children in terms of not being aware of societal norms and having had no contact with homophobia. They would naturally just follow their hearts romantically, without fearing social pressure to conform.

I noticed after a first few episodes some mystery about food. We know the employees eat lunch at work but we never see them eating. Then there is the food-less dinner outside. We finally see food consumed as a reward inside Lumon. Now I know Sci-Fi often skips over real-life situations that complicate a story or film. Crime stories with no police in the real world, or space movies with no bathrooms. With all the attention to detail I find it difficult to believe it is just a coincidence. I binged this show all over last weekend and was not disappointed. Great overview of this show!

I was wondering if I missed a lunch scene somehow. There’s no cafeteria that we’ve seen, they never say “what’s for lunch” or “we’re having the same thing as always for lunch”. “What’s for dinner” caused an argument. What about lunch?!!!

Only a min in but I want to write this out before I forget but a thing about the innies esp in regards to the higher staff is the dehumanization. The genuine parasoical relationship between Cobel and Miltchick to the Servaned employees Like at times Cobel and Miltchick constantly refer to the innies relationships as “cute” or “I loved when you 2 got along so well.” Borderline treating the innies as characters they watch and enjoy the arcs of. Which is, dehumanizing when done face to face with real human people.

Elevator: love it. Reminds me of going down the stairs/elevator for hypnosis. The deeper you go, the more into unconscious...other side of yourself. Welness: reading how their outies are valued outside makes them calm because in a way the show acknowledges that something is missing from their identity and feeling a connection to their outies makes them calm/ feel more complete.

GREAT coverage of season 1! One thing I don't think many have mentioned is the lack of privacy for the main characters, especially Mark. Both his innie & outtie are watched excessively by Mrs. Cobel. Her character is so mysterious to me bc of how damn weird she is and how dedicated she is to her job, both on and off shift. I can't wait to find out what her motivation is. I know it has something to do w/her mother. But is she for or against Lumon? That's the question. And why does Mark live in the complex of Lumon houses, but the others do not? You'd think Mark would be a little suspicious about why he has a neighbor that supposedly doesn't work for Lumon, living in Lumon housing developments. And why do none of the severance employees ever run into each other at the beginning or end of the work day? I know they are staggered a bit, but it's too coincidental that it NEVER happens?? Also, by the way everyone acts in this 'world,' I'm assuming it's some sort of parallel universe. Just the actions of Ricken's guests at their "dinner" party (with no food), I just got this feeling that it's not meant to be our world. It's not just Lumon that is weird in this world. It's everyone. They're all off their rockers! lol

Cobel/Selvig seeing to be raise in a Kier school, continuing the religious mofits, it seen Cobel was rise in the creed in the same way as sort of nun on inquisitor if you want it. even her name "Harmony" speak of it. And we dont know if other dosent live there because they go in diferent hours(probably to ensure less contamination between then). So it seen they are cordination for this, since there is not innis and outies at the same time, your job is just your job. And Ricken is clearly a guru with outside ideas, he is just very excentric.

I feel like mark and Gemma together are a big experiment for Lumon. Like they brought her back to life after her car accident or let her alive and hijacked her brain OR she’s a robot with Gemma’s consciousness and they’re seeing if the chips can erase memories even when people are forced together….that’s why Harmony has to live next to him and insert herself everywhere, she’s always checking to see if his chip is working. But I think she’s being experimented on too, someone’s watching her, it’s all one big experiment.

This is great! Amazing synopsis and I love your style. Now, one thing I never hear discussed…Ricken’s writing is exactly like the holy Kier Eagan writing but the mirror opposite - self vs corporate hive. The writing has the same cheesiness and cadence. And Ricken’s friends follow and quote same as the severed Lumin employees in the office and are super awkward. Mark’s sister is normal though. These people are severed too but set free into the wild and they don’t know it.

  • @theliquidllama1
    @theliquidllama1 Жыл бұрын

One theory about why everyone is fascinated by Ricken's book reading is that some of Mark's friends are Innis planted by the pharmaceutical Corp to keep Mark in check. Marks a bigger test subject then anticipated, that's why I feel like they have to make him genuinely feel like his wife died and his friends are there. A dead giveaway is when they find the baby and the one friend runs out with the baby like he's looking for approval announcing that he's the one that found the baby. Again not my theories this is all stuff I've heard or read. Great show I am in love with it.

I’ve never seen the Cloud Atlas film, and from the sound of it, some of the casting decisions were… interesting… but I read the book soon after it first came out, and it actually is good. I could be biased as I read it when I was a teen so it was quite formative, but the ideas are bold and interesting, the worldbuilding is great, as is the way the different writing styles reflect the different characters and their circumstances. Worth a read even if you didn’t like the film, I’d say.

Pretty sure the starting scene is a test a test to make sure the chip actually works. They even ask her her father's fav breakfast or something (which you'll only notice on 2nd watch). Also the welness check is also the same test just later on which if you remember cobel says 'trust me he needs it' because she wanted to see if doing most extreme things like the candle made by his wife will remind the innie mark of his wife or not. The aptly named wellness check is checking whether the innie's are "well' or not as in still severed or not or is the implant working as it supposed to or not. Also You missed that outie Irvin's paintings he is drawing the testing area elevator. That means he has been there maybe he was the 1st one & now gemma is the 2nd one. & even before Irvin they probably tested the severance on goats maybe? Lol. Irvin also has a full list of severed people apart from gemma ofc. Again mark only says she is alive. Not Gemma is alive. His sister is smart enough but as mark has forgotten everything. She can easily misunderstand the she as her daughter. Sadly. Probably they shouldn't do this but who knows they have the basis to do that.

Yeah definitely the second season will be Innie Mark knowing that Gemma is alive, but not outie Mark. At least not from the get go. I expect a "She's alive" and Devon saying something like "i know, I'm holding my baby right now" and then Mark just being disgruntled and forgetting he has Gemma's photo in his hand, or not putting two and two together.

28:43 you’re literally describing how s1 of Severance ended. All of MDR knows about their outside life, Devon knows that Cobel/Selvig is with Lumon and if they try to talk to anyone they’ll likely be targeted, Mark knows about Gemma being Ms. Casey, Helly knows how important she is to Jame Egan. Idk how much more they could’ve set up season 2 to be way different.

petey will return in season two, again as a device. he died, as did mark's wife. so he'll become one of the innies who never leaves. we'll be able to theorize about mark's wife through what we see of petey. my theory, anyway.

Funny you make a Lost reference, because this show has given me the same feeling Lost used to when it first aired.

@@joey4track yeah I think the negative reception to 2 just came from the jarring shift to the docks away from the barksdale plot, but the stuff about labor unions is super prescient and builds out the world in an essential way. 5 is very bad imo, sloppy writing and just feels like Simon was using it to complain about his old bosses at the Sun

The beginning of this breakdown and the beginning of the show with the hallway navigation, reminds me of the beginning of the film 🎥 “I Heart ♥️ Huckabees.” You might like it. I’m so curious what you would think actually.

Severance is clearly about incarnation. Innies are us here on earth(physical plane) and our outties are our souls(spiritual plane). This place is hell. We dont know what we are doing here just like the innies. Miss cobel = Cowbell. Irving- Serving. Burt = Burnt. Kier = dark/black Egan = little fire

Cloud atlas wasn't that bad. I mean, it's not flawless or anything, but some of the ideas were neat. I was more invested in the far future arc. That world, sort of spoke to me with the synthetic humans and whatnot. A scary peek into a possible future. The messages about freedom and ideas moving through time. Whether that is the soul or just passed down via culture. Sure some of it could have been executed better. But the overall movie isn't terrible. Some of the costumes are though lol gotem
