The walk was simply a special favour done for some clients at their request. It was more so the client could show off his wealth and his prize (a night with an Oiran) rather than a common way for an Oiran to displace herself. I imagine more discerning clients with a reputation or promises to uphold would have asked that she arrive in a palanquin (which would have hidden her from view). The Oiran Walk is a very obvious an lavish display in all respects, and I doubt it was employed frequently. Oiran had the social status and power to refuse any part of a client, including his wishes, so I imagine that only Oiran who had deep relationships with loyal clients would do this for them. As shown, the procession is arduously slow and difficult, and the constitution of women was not as great as it is today, especially since most (if not all) prostitutes suffered from venereal disease and lack of competent and compassionate care.

This is false. Oiran are courtesans for the wealthy and trained in the arts including music, calligraphy and poetry. Geisha came second, they started as men who entertained customers as they waited for the Oiran or prostitutes.
If I cannot become Oiran, at least I wish one day to go and see one Oiran live too
Well, between this and the strut from Saturday Night Fever, I'm convinced that every country has a kick ass walk.
She's so beautiful! How much talent and endurance she has to be carrying 30 kg around while walking so slow and stylishly!
Wow she walks so elegantly
omg the girl in front of the Oiran has to hold up that box through the whole procession! Must be agonizing!

Its just so amazing watching her walking on that heels..
Really lovely. But, I would hate to be stuck behind an oiran procession if I'm running late :)

They way they move is so graceful and fluid. But it must be agony, especially if it was hot and humid. When they then be expected to work right after that?
Very very beautiful.
shit, I watched this video three times. It's so hypnotic to me for some reason.
demon slayer got the walk down to the details... .smh

Why its literally flat platformers. Bruh idk why women freak out when they see shoes with any height to it
misumi or inagaki made a movie with the oiran walk in it with many oiran in the walk. the film was barely saved but even still, miraculous.

i fell in love with her
I noticed the oiran was allowed to steady herself by placing a hand on one of the men in the procession. Who and what are these men? Are they priests? They aren't garbed like Buddhist or Shinto priests.
So beautiful
Pretty cool ! 💓❤❤❤❤
Astounding!
Beautiful 😍

LOVE IT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am impressed
It must have been a day long trip just going to the store
Thank you very much.
This takes platform flip flops to a whole new level. I wonder back then when they did this it was like telling the whole street Some luckyguy is about to get laid with this girl right here.
Is there a reason behind such a specific and precise walk???

i swear i saw this tourist in the lower left corner holding a katana, since i could see the hilt O.O;;
I just saw a latest video of this procession on tiktok and the man that the Oiran was holding on is the same man from 11 years ago. I didn’t know abt this kind if culture but it’s fascinating
Love it!! Can you imagine western models trying to do the Taiyu walk. I think that's how you spell the top oiran.
What does the man at the head of the procession call out?

Wooden shoes was forced upon the Japanese by Christian Europeans. They say'd the kind of shoes the Japanese wore traditionally were uncivilized.

Riri Simps that's how they had to walk in the past, I suppose it was seen as something sensual and elegant since oiran were top courtesans.

Along with the shoes to bump up the elegance and top level status of the oiran. They needed to look as good as possible (and mainly make the guest that could afford the service which is said to be around 30-50k in USD back then) look and feel the part too.
