Oilskin Tarp 8x8 Review

A lot of people have been asking for a review on my 8x8 Oilskin tarp, so I thought I'd make a short video to show what I think of it and how it works in the British weather.
Hope you enjoy!
Brian.

Another great video, I am thinking about investing in one of these over the plastic tarps. Thanks for taking the time to go into so much detail.

I own a Tentsmiths Oilskin 12'x12' tarp and love it. I like how you used a stick to pull out the sloped back of your tarp. I'll need to give that a try.

This video is a terrific example of why it is a great idea to carry a tarp/poncho and other key survival kit items when out in nature, especially in cold weather or if you are alone. . Personally I like the angled diamond shape for those times when you need to maximize conservation of metabolic heat and/or need to use a full body length warming fire in late fall or early spring. In warmer weather the priority becomes shedding heat from the shelter by letting air flow through the shelter. For that task I like the lean-to, with or without a little roof overhang. Or a Baker tent shape for camping or survival in colder weather. Baker tents have a large overhead tarp attached to the upper edge and ridge line of the shelter, similar to your configuration Brian, to provide an area where you can stand up and do camp tasks during rainy periods outside of the shelter's walls. The overhang can also be stowed above the roof of the Baker tent, allowing heat from a warming fire to work with your clothing and other cover elements to make a survivable micro-climate. Add a browse bed of leaves, boughs or grasses a foot thick will help protect you from heat loss due to conduction.

Brilliant video, mate! I'm from Michigan in the U.S. and I started backpacking a couple years ago and every time I went out I went more and more bushcraft before I even knew what bushcraft was, haha. I have recently invested in a bedroll setup and part of that setup was a treated canvas tarp. I think it is basically what you have shown here. The tarp I got was a bit heavier in make I think but treated with oils and wax so that it is water and fire resistant for good shelter usage. I haven't been able to test it out yet because I ordered it over holiday break and I'm still at college and it's brutally cold here in Michigan. I'm really excited to try out this setup and the kind of things you've shown in this video this coming spring. I plan on rolling up all the gear I need within my wool blankets and canvas tarp to replace my frame pack, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat. Cheers, brother, and keep on making fantastic videos.

Looks like a fine ground-dwelling tarp! The only canvas tarp I own is a lot larger (more than 3x3m) and it didn't really get the kind of test I'd hoped to give it this winter (what with the constant unending wind, trees falling down all over the place, and the complete absence of any actual snow or properly cold weather). That said, the spring rains are upon us, and I long to spend a night with the sound of rain hitting canvas, so I might pull it out and give it a go :) Great video, as always. Atb, Si

Paracord comes in two varieties: the standard paracord is made with nylon, which stretches and makes the tarp go saggy after a while. The other one is a bit more rare and is made with polyester fibres which stretches hardly at all. Obviously you may want to look into getting the polyester version for ridgelines and the like... One big drawback of the poly version is it is not very good in the UV resistance department but in a forest that wouldn't be much of an issue due to the foliage cover blocking most of the UV rays.

Hi Brian Been camping all my life in canvas tents, you cannot beat the sound of rain on it compaired to other tarps aslong as you dry properly before storing as mold will set in. Cheers Phil

Watch Corporals Corner review on his tarp. He adds a paracord loop for his stakes. Also, I'm a quilter, we never fold quilts the very same way or that crease weakens over time...same with kites. Cheers. Love your video. I really want my own canvas tarp

That's awesome news, sold! I saw that you have the isle royal pack too. I'm thinking about getting the jr version, only because I intend on carrying a canvas bed roll at the bottom and I figured that the full size would hang way to low with the roll strapped to the bottom since it's something like 5 inches longer at the bottom. Do you find the waist strap to be imperative & do you think it would hang too low with the 7 inch bedroll attached to the bottom? Thanks man, you've been a real help so far

I carry 2 twin size wool blankets and a waxed canvas bedroll. I hang the 7 inch bedroll under the pack. I debated with myself for a while whether to get the full size or jnr but I'm glad I got the full size. It's surprising how much room 2 wool blankets take up or an arctic sleeping bag. and then youtube videos never take into consideration food which takes up a lot of room. From my experience I'd say the jnr is defiantly a day pack, it certainly wouldn't work for me for several days. Hope this helps! :)Brian.

Always loved that tarp and the rustic look of it so cool of you to do a review of it. There's a British company called 'Wynnchester' and i'm eying their tarp at the moment so might run that by you to get your take on it. If you dont mind me asking but how much did you pay for that including postage from the States? ~Peace~

I love this tarp from its awesome because its so light for a canvas tarp, if you were to pay for the canvas tarp from Wynnchester your going to be getting 12 oz canvas to be ready for a heavy load! This was £150 all in with customs and postage so not that bad in my opinion for a canvas tarp of this quality. Brian.

No worries bro, my guess would be a wynnchester would be around 6kg so deffo a car camping item aha. The oilskin I have is 2kg so still heavy but manageable in a pack. This one is from tentsmiths, great company but do take a while to get through to when ringing from over here in the uk, worth it tho in my opinion! Brian.

  • @JourneymanHandcraft

It's soaked in wax so it's extremely waterproof, I've slept in this in the rain and the rain has literally just gathered on top without a leak. naturally being thick cotton canvas it won't set on fire, also being waxed it won't even char, this tarp excells at being able to set it close to a fire without worry! :) Hope this helps bro!Brian.

they're infinite man. a tarp can be used as many different shelters or added on to a shelter. can be used as a ground sheet. can carry fire wood and game on it. can be used as a hammock or a cot. improvised bivvy sack. roycroft pack bedroll and i'm sure theres more..
