Oil Painting Value Study

In this oil painting value study, I show the four main value areas you need to get right to paint light and shadow:
In the light:
. General light
. Half-tone
In the shadow:
. Core shadow value
. Reflected light
This video is an edited recording of a live online wokshop taught as part of my Threads workshop program. Find out more about Threads here:

To do this tutorial you will need:
MATERIALS LIST
---------------------------
The reference photo:
www.learning-to-see.co.uk/wp-c...
And:
. a pre-mixed value scale
. something to paint on
. some brushes
For the value scale, if you don’t have a Munsell scale don’t worry. Take white as your lightest value and ivory black as your darkest.
Mix a value you think is half way between them (you can use the value scale on the reference photo as a guide). Then mix two more values, one half way between the white and the middle value, and one half way between the black and the middle value.
Now you have a 5-step value scale. If any of the steps seem uneven to you, adjust them until you’re happy.
The five step scale will probably be fine, but you can also mix a value between each of those, giving you a 9 step scale which will correspond to the one on the reference photo
Brush choice is up to you and not critical. Hog filberts will be fine, or flats, whatever you’re most comfortable with. You’ll want three about 5mm wide ideally, so that you can have one brush for lights, one for darks and one for middle values. Also one or two larger brushes for the background.

No matter what level an artist is at, it is always valuable (no pun intended) to refresh with a value study. Thank you for your wonderful instruction:)

So true, every time I feel I'm struggling with something I go back to value studies for a while. It always results in some progress being made.

Paul, I really like your easy, careful way of explaining value. You explain value in detail and the show us by example. I do appreciate this because it does sink in. It all makes sense to me, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom.

Thank you for making such an in-depth and amazing video! You have a nice, soothing voice and really straightforward way of teaching. I did a painting with oil before, but I never painted anything with oil afterwards, and this gave me the motivation to get into oils

You're very welcome Jerri. You can practice that technique easily too, without actually doing a painting. A very useful skill to develop!

Excellent video Paul. Question - do you use this “study” to simply prepare yourself to understand the subject you would like to paint, or do you paint color over it after this initial layer dries.

I mostly do value studies just to learn more about value. It's the foundation of colour and so important, I think. If you're learning about value your'e learning about colour.
