Did I hear you say in one of your videos that you seal your drawing with Liquin? If so how long should I leave it to dry to do that?

@@suestone5476 Hi Sue, I put a very thin coat of a Liquin and Gamsol mixture (85/15) onto my drawing and let it dry overnight. It dries quickly and is ready to go when it's dry to the touch.

I watched and enjoyed the video, Utrecht were my first watercolors. They were always so nice and helpful. Back to the videos enjoyed the colors in this one, his eyes and everything else were great. I am so impressed with your videos. You are a gifted teacher! You explain the detail of what you are doing, while encouraging the student. "if you do this, you'll be just fine..." which minimizes the tension and gives the student a sense of control. It is really quite liberating AND informative. Thoroughly enjoyed this Steve. Once again, its so great to have a pro of your caliber sharing on KZread. The pink underpainting was sensational. I love Liquin by the way. Its been awhile since breaking out my oils but Liquin is such a nice medium to work with. I adopted a technique from another illustrator where the underpainting was done in watercolor on watercolor board then sealed with several coats of clear coat then using Liquin transparently glazed with oils. Super fun! Keep the vids coming. Looking forward to the drawing portion of this one.

Hiya Steve! Thanks for your great feedback. I'm loving your latest video, but haven't finished it yet and so haven't commented... but I will! I'm so used to working from a drawing that it amazes me to watch you work from a blank page and just start painting and let the paint carry you along. Kudos and extremely well done!! I used to work quite a bit on Canson hot press illustration board when I was airbrushing my illustrations, and I loved it. And I would use the coldpress for drawing and pastels. But the watercolor paper glued on board looks like it's so much fun to work on. As far as the drawing portion of this painting goes, I have it all on video, of course, but my iMovie lags so bad and takes so long to do one of these that I had to delay releasing it. But, I'm working on it!!!

Hey thanks! Spontaneous painting is a fun exercise. I've been doing it for years. Helps loosen me up and great fun when I can't think of what to paint. Quick too. Its not something I would do with portraits or paintings that take more planning but loose landscapes work pretty well. I understand about the editing. Can be quite a chore sometimes. Computers are on their own schedule. LOL!

Love this! I appreciate your relaxed, honest style, Steve. I have been afraid of color when comes to painting or even pencils. I love to work with it in my photography though. Now I am working on myself, to introduce the two. Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous work with us out here! :-)

(of course, I'm a little biased when it comes to western subject matter. =) Stick with your painting and it'll come to you, I promise. I have heard many portrait painters say that they always start with the eyes - since the eyes are always the main focal point of the subject. Then they would work out from there, always making sure that the eyes remained the center of interest. Here, we have a pink bandanna (the main feature of the piece) that tends to compete with the eyes. It's a tricky situation. But I think Steve does a beautiful job in balancing the two! Still, I feel that the eyes are the true focal point because their expression sets the mood and tone of the whole painting. But I wonder why Steve didn't concentrate more on the eyes from the get go. Maybe it's his vast experience that gives him confidence not to worry about it until he's putting in the finishing touches. I think that's were less experienced painters might really screw up.

Steve, I love your videos! You actually "teach" and not just let us watch you paint. I hear you refer to, but cannot find, a video in which you talk about how you transfer such detailed drawings to your canvas and how you seal it. Also, I have a terrible time finding brushes I like, especially those smaller brushes used for detail. What do you suggest?

Hi Barbara, I've been getting so many questions about getting my detailed drawing onto my canvas that I've started doing a video showing the entire process. It will be out in about 2 weeks, so look for it. I'm on my phone now and I'm not great at typing on this danged contraption, ha! Let me get to my studio computer and I'll reply to your question with a detailed how to. Thank you for watching! As far as the small brushes go, I use Buck Scholastic Wonder White synthetic brushes, both round and flat. Smallest size is "0" in the rounds. Size "12" down to a size "6" for the flats. It just depends on the size of the painting and the detail needed. Hope that helps, ttyl!

Without getting into a sad, long story I have been paying off my husband's medical debt for over a decade and have another five years to go. Needless to say, no extra play money to take lessons. There are so many talented artists on KZread but really good teachers who explain what they're doing without leaving out essential information that they assume you already know are not that easy to find. Thank you so much for "giving back". I have one more question...you say if you use Liquin it is usually dry enough to paint the next day. How dry does it have to be? Dry to the touch? If it is mostly dry but if you press on a few thicker areas of paint and it lightly comes off on your finger can you still paint or does it need to be completely dry?

@@barbarawainscott6136 it has to be dry enough to touch without lifting paint. I would try to avoid painting over thicker areas that are still soft when you press it. I try to save those areas to the end, since you make corrections along the way and they may not line up with thicker passages (one of my pet peeves on gallery paintings. It should look like it just rolled off your brush and you didn't do a lot of work to get it there). God bless, Steve!

I love the trick of sealing your drawing. That solves a lot of problems. I used to uae liquin but switched to walnut oil. I can't remember why at the moment. Have you tried walnut oil? Love your work!

Mary Kay Parker Hi Mary Kay! I have painted with walnut oil and there are a couple of reasons to use it instead of liquin. First, it's non toxic. I believe it's sometimes used for salads and cooking, but don't quote me on that. Second, it dries slooooowly. So it gives you more open time to work your paints... strictly a personal preference. Both work, it's just what you prefer. I know that Morgan Weistling uses walnut oil, so you can't get much higher recommendation than that. Cheers!

Thank you Steve; I have another question. I think you seal your drawing with clear gesso? I think that is what I remember. Anyway. I just happened to find a huge roll of oil primed linen at a really good price at an estate sale. Could clear gesso be painted on oil primed linen? That would be acrylic over oil. Maybe there is another way to seal the drawing on oil primed linen. What would you suggest.

Hi Mary Kay, if you use acrylic primed linen or canvas you could use clear gesso. But if it's oil primed linen, then you can't use gesso. So, remember, you can paint oil over acrylic, but not acrylic over oil. Oil paint dries too slowly and acrylic much faster, so any acrylic painted over oil would crack and peel. I actually use a thinned liquin coat (80% liquin / 20% gamsol) to seal my drawing in this video. As soon as I get it edited, I will upload the drawing and sealing process I used on this painting. Paint on!

Great video, Steve, and awesome portrait. I also tend to end up with darker paintings (though it probably suits my style a bit more to leave them that way, lol). I feel like it gives you the ability to really push the contrast where you want. Quick question, do you usually paint with daylight or studio light?

Hi Andrew, it sure works with your style as I love everything I've seen you do. As far as the lighting goes. I have large windows on the east, south and west that I control with room darkening shades that open from the bottom up or top down. But my main lighting is two side by side ceiling mounted LED lights that are modeled after the old flourescent long tubes (if that makes any sense). Each light has 4 light strips in it for a total of 8 bulbs. The color temp is 5000K and gives me the controlled light I need, and enables me to paint long after daylight is done, which is such a blessing. They are on dimmers, but I don't ever use the dimmers. How about you, are you team daylight or studio light?

Thanks for the info! I'm a bit of a night owl so I don't have a lot of daylight to paint in. I just have an assortment of lamps and lights hanging around the room. I really need to sort that situation out. Is 5000K a temp to shoot for? (Sorry for all the questions!)

Never can ask too many questions! In my research, 4000K-5000K is the range for the ideal temperature to paint under. Many galleries have lighting that's maybe a little warmer 3500K-4000K, so it's not a problem if your paintings are warmed up a little when they show them. Here's a link to something similar to what I have (though, these are 4000K and perfectly good color to paint under), I hope it helps. I don't remember what this particular frame is called, but I buy all of my frames here: www.montgomeryframes.com/ I believe these are the best handmade frames being made for just about any genre you paint in and can be completely customized to your preferred ornamentation, color and finish. Every one is made by hand and are in many of the finest museums and galleries throughout the United States.

Steve - When you were painting the background you went from red, to a grey to a purple and then added green all in one setting - when I try this I get a mixed color of mud - what is the secret behind putting colors on top of other colors without it getting all mixed on the canvas? It's like you have the ability to change colors at any time. Is my paint to thick? I would love to see a video on how you actually create your pallet and how much medium you are adding to the brush - the thickness of the paint so that it flows consistently etc...

Mike, that's a great question and one of the big reasons I have been avoiding painting with oils. The few times I tried, I got a big mess of mud!

What I'm confused about is if you do all the darks and lights first then, with the lights, doesn't that rob you of the chance to make it appear that your lights are sitting on top of your midtones?

I love your work and I want to get some info about you, did you study painting academically or by your own ? and where did you study ? and how long have you been painting? Finally, sorry for any language mistakes, I am not a native English.

I went to university for art and became an illustrator, also known here as a commercial artist. I've been a full-time fine artist for more than 10 years now. Until it's dry, which means overnight at most, less if you can take it outside and put it in the sun to dry, sometimes it only takes a couple of hours then since it's a very thin coat.

@@REALPAINTERGUY You're welcome. If you want to lock the drawing down and have it dry quicker, you can try using a thin coat of clear gesso made by Liquitex. Make sure it's the clear and not the white or colored gesso though! LOL!

Nice brush there at the beginning. Hairy stick technology hasn't advanced much in the past 2300 years, has it?

Hi Mike, I don't hardly ever glaze, unless I find that I really missed the boat on the saturation of something. Otherwise it's all straight painting
