Oil Painting for Beginners Step by Step Flowers
So I have been asked a lot by my students how to handle complex subjects. When you have to paint something with a ton of shapes and color and value shifts what do you do? That's what I answer in this video on how to paint flowers. I break down my process of painting a complex subject such as flowers.

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

My dad was an oil painter and he loved painting so much. He passed away 6 months ago and all of his painting materials were left in my room. Whenever I look at them I get sad they weren't used anymore. Now I am trying to learn to paint and I'm so glad I found your channel. Thank you! I'll try my best to practice.
You are an insanely good teacher. So many important lessons, tips, techniques etc. in 10 minutes. This video changed the way I paint.
Love the Clint Eastwood bit. Made me lol 😂. Your approach makes it easier to just get started, by just getting something general down and refining it as you go along. Very helpful!!

Roses has always been a difficult subject for me. Thanks so much for this video. I can see where I get hung up and make my mistakes and what I really should be doing. Now, I am going to take what I learned and hit the canvas
Wow!! That’s beautiful! Well done!
So brilliantly explained and such generous sharing of really helpful tips THANK YOU
Your tutorial video helps me paint and share videos. In particular, it is easy to express my painting process in words. Thanks.
rose water was in my room when I was painting this beautiful rose. i like the black background that made the rose outstanding. the color you choose were very appropriated. i think the right color for rose with value really have a big role to look so real and pretty.
Eastwood impression is spot on! Great video!
Just love your style of painting, so cool and makes me want to paint too! Thank you

Rosemary brushes are available in the US from WindRiver Arts and you get them in 2 business days.
Is linseed oil absolutely necessary? If a person only had paint thinner, would that work? And just used less and less thinner to create that graded scale thing you showed?
I’m really enjoying your videos. Great information and production. Also, I’m from Pittsburgh so I appreciate the Steelers gear. You from Pittsburgh?

Paint Coach That’s cool. Always nice to see the black and gold. :) If you ever visit and need recommendations just let me know. :)
The thing i struggle with is lights. Literally, lights. Light bulbs, flashlights, sun rays. Anything that emits light. How do i show that something is shining without covering up whats underneath? A street light, for example. How do i paint the rays from the light without covering up the buildings or trees in the background behind the light? Do i thin the paint so its more transparent? What do you do?

Hi I just became a patron for $5 a month tier 1 and I am trying to find this rose tutorial. Can you tell me how to find it? I dont see it in either "portraits" or "landscapes" Thanks! Edit: found it!
It sounds like you were talking about the Macpherson book when you mentioned the darkest darks and lightest lights. Might there be a connection? Great stuff.
