Gracias.

Thanks Luis for this awesome demonstration! I don't buy brushes from the art store anymore and in my experience, in the long term, I actually think it is cheaper to make your own brushes. As you mentioned, the great advantage is that you can customise the brush to whatever stroke or goal you have in mind. However, the exception would be if you want to make a sable brush or a watercolour mop brush, but you can get a very similar stroke by inserting wild hog hair that is brown in colour, into the feather ferrule. Furthermore, if you boil stiff hog hair for 30 minutes it will become softer and more 'springy' emulating the mop brush a little bit...you can also select hairs that turn inwards and arrange them to emulate the mop brush configuration, this takes time and it is probably easier just to by the mop brush from Zecchi.

I fully understand your inquiries into these brushes and enjoyed watching, but would just want to say that I have several times witnessed great artists using the cheapest wide, flat brushes you can buy from a thrift shop, commonly coming in a pack of three for about $5 to paint stunning detailed portraits. With most hobbies and interests, you spend the first half of your time acquiring more and more equipment, and the rest of your time following paring your collection down to a few essentials that you really understand and use all the time. I think most artists have scores and scores of brushes, but only ever use a few of them regularly. This may be an inevitable process, but I'm sure it holds true. Thank you for your videos.

I agree with your assessment that handmade expensive brushes are not necessary to make masterful paintings. My channel does seek to answer questions about historical materials an procedures that shaped the art of painting. Thank you for commenting!

Paint being a largely stiff, intractable medium, the end of a piece of rope can work wonders in the right hand. I’m big on subtle texture manipulation and find some startling similarities to rendering/ plastering/brickwork. Get the mortar right and a brick will lay itself. Knowing your material and knowing what you want from it and the means to get there can be bog ordinary and cheap as chips. I have mega bucks sable and aforementioned frayed rope ends, both have the same relative worth.
