You know OSHA did not approve this when the operating instructions say ...... 1. Set equipment on fire. 2. Inset leg into moving flywheel. 3. Place belts onto moving pulley with bare hands.

Yes, these old hot bulb engines are unbreakable, they will still run, after additional 100 or 200 years, if they were maintained well, more modern and more complicated engines will than already bei forgotten.

​@@sion023I also think it is a diesel engine. The purpose of burning the oily rag on the cylinder head before starting is to heat the pipe from the fuel pump to the injector nozzle.

Да, это дизель, причем одноцилиндровый низкообопотистый. Подобные двигатели были и в СССР, только в основном вертикальные.

My grandfather had this engine on his farm here in pakistan in the 70's. Then electricity came and things changed---. And then all the electronics came and then again shortage of electricity---.

The flywheel needs Vishnu figures all around the flat surface of this multicolored Ruston Engine flywheel on the red and white flat peripheral surface. It would really beautify this already attractive pump unit feeding thousands. I see the 3/4" pipe feeding cooling water to the engine. If this engine runs on vegetable oil then the world seems right with good lubricating oil to it's crankcase.

У них паровиков практически нет, в основном допотопные дизеля, либо любой другой двс с огромным ресурсом и легкой ремонтопригодностью.

Although the engine is large it does not generate a lot of power - A modern small engine might run at 3 to 4000:RPMs - but has to be rebuilt every 2 months - also a modern engine might drink 50 gallons of fuel a day - they also will only run on highly refined fuel - That engine at 120 RPMs has time to burn the fuel 100% so it might only burn 5 to 8 gallons of heavy oil a day - heavy oil cost half of what diesel cost - also that engine might run 15 yrs till the rings are replaced - It's large but does not generate much power compared. To it's size - it could already be 70yrs old and out lasted 350 small modern engines

@anything old mechanical - If the moving parts weren't oiled, it would seize up. It hasn't seized up, in probably more than a CENTURY of use, therefore the moving parts *ARE* oiled, and on a regular basis. Got that?

Burt, that's an understatement. They would probably go into cardiac arrest with all of what would be safety violations here in the USA.😮

No computer parts to break down and cause this engine to not work!!! Simplicity and all you really needed was to be smart enough to know that you don't get your clothing caught up in the moving parts. Sure pumps a lot of water and is quite reliable.... can't say that about modern engines.. lol
