The BEST glazing instructional video I've seen. Everyone else seem to "cut" throughout, giving (a novice like me) the impression that critical steps and transitions are being missed when that's not necessarily the case. Thanks for removing my doubts and making a seamless presentation!

Glad it helped you Rachel and I wish you much fun and the best results!! This method will work for 'simpler' projects such as the one I did or coloring larger areas. If you want to dive deeper into that like what to do when painting your own Mona Lisa there are a couple more steps to look into...especially more layering and such but if you are into oils have a look at my playlists, they are a bit more organized with many more realistic artworks.

Just found this video and agree wholeheartedly with a previous review, that this is one of the best explanations I’ve heard, and I too am a 72 yr old beginner. Very motivating, thank you.

Just getting back into the re-exploration of painting. While I only use acrylic at this time, much of what you taught today is still valid for that medium. Thank you for teaching in a way that is peaceful, concise and full of information. Glad I came across your channel! Keep up the wonderful work!

Thank you for this video, Michael. I have been searching for a tutorial on glazing as the old masters did and your presentation was perfect! Very pleasant to watch and listen to. One of my favorite artists, Maxfield Parrish apparently painted several layers of glazes to create the vibrant colors he desired.

In the meantime I can recommend a channel called draw mix paint. Just type it in KZread and you find him. He is a very instructive channel but he does that very well and clearly structured :) he covers a lot of topics about oil colors and painting in general :)

Speed paintings are annoying. I can never understand why artists do this to a demo. It’s unnecessary and the opposite of “showing” since it goes by so bloody fast.

Wow! I think you really made this look loke the old master's style yet you made it seem easy enough that I would like to try this method. I also love how you sped up the video and voiced over the explanation of steps. Thank you for sharing this! I look forward to watching more of your videos.:)

same here. If you like to see some more realism tutorials of mine you can head over to my playlist section and find them there. Judging the values works best when working on a toned canvas. I usually make a print of the original photo and make little color tests on the print to get as close to the color I need. One of the best oil painting teachers is the 'drawmixpaint' channel. I really like his way of teaching :)

My pleasure. This all made also so little sense to me in the beginning and once I figured it out I decided to make this rather simple and by far not complete video for those starting as well. Glazing pretty quickly can sound scientific and here I think covered the very basics:)

What an inspiring demonstration, your instruction was easy to follow, very informative and one of the best I have viewed. As a retired Art teacher I tend to be very discerning when it comes to a lot of the KZread so called experts, but your easy to follow demonstration must have encourage many beginners to ‘give it a go’ Well done.

Zoe Robinson yes it works really well :) it of course also works if you go right into color without an underpainting layer. Glazing just tints the color and/or increases depth :) let me know how it worked for you and show me the result in fb or insta 😘

When I look at my earlier paintings it almost every time was the case...I was happy with the result but it would have been much more realistic when I were brave enough to add more darks :D

Thank you for your comment :) Well the Grisaille is basically the underpainting in monochromatic colors which I assume you know already. Here I wanted to show rather easy way to color a black and white painting helping those transitioning into color. If you have questions, please let me know and I will try to answer them :)

Good tips, especially for oils! I will say- in my experience, if you’re using acrylics, you’re best off going one of two directions. 1. Ideally, use an actual glazing medium. They were a game-changer for me, & give beautiful results, without any of the risk of damaging the binders & resulting in adhesion/permanency problems like you can get from diluting acrylics excessively with water. From the ease of use & smoothness of application, to the quality of the finish, glazing medium (I’m used to Golden’s) seems to really be better for this purpose than any other matte or gloss medium I’ve tried, though they can work in a pinch & are probably still better than water in most cases; don’t get me wrong. I use water to just SLIGHTLY thin the consistency of acrylics all the time. But if you use enough to try to thin heavy-bodied paints, especially, to a good glaze consistency, IME it seems like that’s a risky amount of water to add to them (if you must attempt this, I’d thoroughly mix a few drops of water in at a time to slowly dilute to the desired consistency, & mostly stick with very transparent pigments, as I really ideally ought to for glazes regardless- but especially in this case; if you add a bunch of water all at once you get weird issues with the binder breaking into clumps & it’s way too easy to add too much at once). 2. This gets to my other point. If you DO use water instead of a more suitable medium for glazes, I recommend using it with fluid or high flow acrylics instead of heavy-bodied, if at all possible. You’ll have a much easier time that way & achieve better results. Because fluid & high-flow acrylics have a heavy pigment load concentrated into much less binder, & the binder is already more of a fluid consistency from the jump, it seems like you can get away with using considerably less water, & rather than risking breaking up unevenly, it simply dilutes smoothly. So with a relatively small amount of water & a transparent pigment, you can dilute them to a good glaze consistency & transparency without encountering as many problems. Heavy-bodied acrylics are just not designed to tolerate the amount of water that you’d need to get a thin, fluid, glaze consistency suited for a smooth, even, very thin application. IMO fluid acrylics + glazing medium (which you can also get away with using less of if you’re using it to dilute fluid/high-flow acrylics rather than having to completely change the consistency of heavy-bodied paint) is probably pretty ideal. Using that kind of blend with a nice, soft brush (I like an oval mop, or a soft flat, or something like that) makes for an extremely smooth, even, thin glaze that still is nice & juicy & strongly pigmented while being plenty transparent as long as it’s at least a somewhat/semi-transparent pigment. Plus, heavy bodied paints are way more expensive, so in addition to not being particularly well-suited for glazes, it’s kind of a waste of paints that are designed to be applied as thickly as you want, if you’re thinning them down to a fluid anyway. Of course if you can’t afford to be buying both heavy bodied AND fluid paints, go with whatever suits your general purposes (you CAN thin heavy bodied paints down with glazing medium much better than with water, & you can technically also buy heavy gels, molding pastes, etc., & simply color them with the pigment load from fluid acrylics- it’s a versatile medium & you can pretty much add any source of pigment to any medium/gel/paste)… But I would definitely warn against adding too much water to heavy-bodied paints, & recommend splurging for some good glazing medium if you can afford to, regardless of which acrylic paint type you go for. For anyone not aware, the difference between fluid & high-flow acrylics as basically just consistency. They’re both a high pigment load concentrated in a smaller amount of very fluid binder. It’s just that fluid acrylics still have a bit of acrylic thickness to them (think of the consistency of drinkable yogurt- but don’t drink them). Whereas high-flow is the thinnest acrylic paint base you can go with. It’s basically the same consistency as ink or milk or something… Pretty similar to acrylic ink, except it’s still considered a paint, whereas acrylic ink is literally an ink, though I’m not sure what the exact difference is. From what I just read, acrylic inks are “water resistant, but not permanent” whereas high-flow acrylics are “permanent when dry & can withstand gentle hand-washing.” High-flow acrylics also, apparently, contain a retarder that prevents them from drying INSTANTLY at that thin viscosity (which I suppose makes them more usable as a paint, whereas acrylic inks should only be dipped into with a pen or what have you because they dry even more rapidly)- but then, IME they’re still acrylic paints & definitely do dry quickly despite the retarder.
