    Thanks Steve, yes it certainly could be great fun and a quirky looker too. Still can't get over how heavy it is though! Just need to get used to the steel strings and sort the frets now.

    The beauty of that bridge versus a set bridge on one of these is that it's so easy to fix the intonation. I love these little things. Thanks for the video and demo.

    I don't play ukulele unless it's a bass uke (not yet, anyway -LOL), but I love watching some of your ukulele vids. This one had me smiling all the way through! My vote for best reaction/comment goes to the one after you tried the tone knob: "The tone? ... It's doing ... some...thing." LOL! Thank you for your fun and entertaining videos.

    Question from a learning uke player, is this adequete to learn on? I loved the video, watched it after buying the same model!

  • @UkuleleWales

    @UkuleleWales

    If it is playable, there is no reason why you can't learn on it. I don't find it the easiest uke to play shape-wise and mine needs a lot of tidying up the frets but once I've got round to doing that, I'm hopeing I'll play it a bit more. The steel strings sound great with effects.

    Thanks Chris, I am pleasantly suprised. It's not fantastic but having checked the intonation more thoroughly today I'm happy it is only a fraction out and I should be able to adjust that on the bridge and once I've sorted the dreadful frets! Shall look forward to yours, intrigued now. Enjoyed the Flight Diana vid.

    Thank you for this thorough review on this very interesting ukulele. I have been eying this for a long time now but I know I do not need it but it does sound very funky.. I suppose also to just buy separate uke strings for this would be annoying enough xD Oh one question I have to you is, is this a very uncomfortable thing to hold, even with a strap, for a longer time?

  • @UkuleleWales

    @UkuleleWales

    Glad it was helpful. It isn't very comfortable but I'm sure with a bit more playing you could get used to it. I need to sort the frets out on mine to make it nice, hopefully soon. I think mine will end up looking great but not played very often.

    Hi Rachel, this oil can uke reminds me of the AU$30 Strum Box Uke (SBU no 6) from Aldi. It looks cheap ... it is cheap ... has nylon strings, a solid square neck like your uke's neck, rough frets too, and has an amp jack. Plays surprisingly well for a cheap soprano. I can't say I'm enamoured with the steel strings on the oil can, it seems you'd rip your fingers with constant strumming, or use a pick.

  • @UkuleleWales

    Hi, I haven't seen the Aldi one, sounds .................. Mmmmm, think I need to get used to the strings, fine so far with light strumming but think I may use a pick, especially when shredding! LOL

    They are not the greatest of ukes but to make the frets playable, it would just need to have a file and smooth them out that way.

    Thank you for this! I bought the exact same model about three years ago and haven't played it much. Apart from the little things that I could tolerate, there was the fact that it's very hard on the fingers, especially on the left hand. I thought I would change for lighter strings, but never did it (I know nothing about guitars, electric or otherwise). The biggest thing, though, was the absence of "acoustic" sound; I really thought it could be played (and heard) unplugged! I thought about adding a piezo pickup and such (maybe I'll do it), but then its bridge isn't gonna transmit much vibrations, I guess? *Please, if don't mind*, when you do a full review, can you talk a little more about the strings (maybe the string gauge if you can). That would be very helpful to me; it seems you didn't have any problem with pressing the chords (like I do). Maybe it's just never-played-electric-guitar finger fragility! :) FIY: My oil can Surf Wax ukulele seems to be like yours in every way except: my neck is darker, and the logo thingy is placed differently. I bought it through a kickstarter funding project (or maybe another platform, I don't remember exactly). It was supposed to come with many bonuses because of its huge success, but none of the bonuses were delivered, due mostly to bad managing decisions (from what I understood). But I got the ukulele, which was of course the most important, for something like 100 US dollars (so much less than 100 pounds). Anyways, thanks again Rachel, grip it and rip it!

    Fab comment, loved reading that Thank You. Yes, will certainly talk about strings etc. when I review it, TBH I'm not used to these strings but I was more concerned about strumming and catching fingers. Do you have an amp to run it through as the pick works fine on mine, just wondering if you have managed to try it with an amp? And yes, always grip it and rip it! ;-)

    Certainly sounds better than the one I bought two years ago, to be honest it was rubbish, the tuning when haywire, when it was moved, it was like a permanent tremolo arm, the whole uke was unsteady. Mine wasn't that heavy, maybe they have strengthened them now to address that issue
