Ohio State Marching Band GoPro Experience
Музыка
This is a video of me marching in the I-6 position with The Ohio State University Marching Band on October 6th, 2018 against Indiana University. Since I am assistant squad leader, I normally lead out the band in the I-1 position. However, this time the head squad leader and I decided to switch positions. This is a true representation of what it is like to be on the field for the ramp entrance, and the incomparable Script Ohio. A special thank you to Emily Dean and the Big Ten Network for allowing me to use their GoPro!

I don't think that's the most impressive part, if everyone starts on the same step and stays on time with the beat everyone will stay in step. In my opinion I think playing the instruments while making coordinated movements is the most impressive thing; there's a lot of things to think about, nothing much to think about to stay in step.
The vocal callouts are what have my attention. I marched through high school, and would have marched in uni if I went through with it. That there is the difference between a band that’s “good for their age” and one that’s genuinely amazing. The coordination and confidence is unmatched. So many kids are afraid to vocalize on the field when they start out. Hearing all the little time keepers like the step, kick, kneel or even a simple audible countdown is so refreshing. It keeps not only the caller in time, but the whole group on the same page. Like the call of whistle at the very start, calling the whole band to attention and starting the pace at the same time… it’s such a little detail that needs more appreciation. Also damn those turns are sharp. Every one is so clean and snappy and just brilliantly executed.

Well, they do that plenty of other times, as well, just for the precision. Say, for example, that they’re making a perfect rectangle. They snap their instruments upwards, and back into place, so as to not have parts of the instrument outside of the area. Just look at 11:34 for example. In front of the drums, they’re snapping their instruments into place. Edit: Or literally even 9:55.

I know this is a year later, but it's actually fairly simple. You focus on what you have to do; Each member does what they do perfectly, and it looks like the whole band doing incredible things. Rotating squares? Just each person in the band moving perfectly in straight lines. :P
Having been a "Band Dad" for the past 17 years with the American Fork Marching Band, in American Fork UT, I can say that this is the culmination of of years of hard work. Great job! first things said in high school marching band is “hi welcome to band!” promptly followed by “forget everything you know about walking, you’ve always done it wrong.” College just builds off of that.
@wolffriendinus

When you join a marching band you spend weeks, or even months, learning how to walk in such a way that it looks like your gliding on the grass. This is so your foot hitting the ground doesn't jar your body which would then reflect in the music you're playing. It's not easy, but even now I find myself doing it sometimes , especially when I'm carrying drinks without lids.
@AmericanGirlGymnasts

By sqweezing your lower body and marching it stabilizes your upper body which makes it easier and sound better to move and play (at least for winds)
@GIITW.5OKC
5 жыл бұрын
It's called glide stepping, The name may vary but still the same concept, its to make it so your upper body does NOT bounce up and down. If you've tried walking, without proper training, with your instrument, you will understand why it is so so very essential.
Alumnus class of 1994. What amazes me is that, year after year since 1878, there has been a constant stream of student musicians / performers from all over Ohio, and the US, coming to take the place of student musicians /performers that graduated the year before.... and each new class is every bit as amazing as the last. TBDBITL GO BUCKS!

Notice how steady the cam is the whole time, a true glide step. Memories just kept flooding in. I remember being on the field doing the halftime show (not for ohio, lol), the music, the crowd. All those hours of practice to make the show perfect. The pride felt when the show is done. The roar of the crowd afterwards. The emotion, thrill, sense of accomplishment, all there. I was truly honored to be able to experience the moment. Thank-you for bring back those memories. Doubt anyone will see this, just felt it was needed to be said.

Ryan, I just found your videos, and god DAMN, man, this sent chills up my spine. I never made it into Ohio State's band, but my high school band experience was as great as it was because of the OSUMB. My high school band director went to OSU and made it into the band. He played tuba, and if I remember correctly, he dotted the 'i' as a 5th-year senior. Huge deal for a black man in the 1970s! Everything we did, from Three Camps and Cadence One for pregame to "Whistle!" to "Halt, Kick, Down, Rest! Don't you move!" was straight up OSUMB. We just did our arm swings on 1 and 5, not 2 and...uh...6? Thanks for letting me relive one of the best times of my life...and live out a dream I'd always had. You rock, man.
Just marched my first game today! Glad to see this in the recommended!
