Oh No! KEVVLOG⁴ #19

Спорт

Some time you crash your kite in not such a good place. If it does happen the best thing to do is to release everything right away to prevent any damages to yourself and your gear. In this vlog I also do a work out with coach Robin and Lasse.

    Kevin, love the vids. Would love to see more of the kite in the shots to understand your kite control and maneuvers. Also, would love to hear a breakdown of how you're doing certain tricks, jumps, etc. That would take your vids to the next level for me and I imagine everyone else that kites and watches. Thanks!

    What about on an off shore like at One Eye? Do you still advise releasing the kite there?

  • @daversj

    @daversj

    3 жыл бұрын

    No, unless you have to. I dumped my kite on One Eye. Waves were well overhead. Thankfully i was able to drift over reef by keeping the lines tight, and relaunched after 2nd wave. Long interval gives you time to relaunch. If you release there your lines would snag on the reef, which is far out. If you’re lucky it would drift north into the lagoon. Best not to dump it obviously. If you released on the outside, kite would be gone. Don’t think i’d want to be drifting outside without my kite. Could be hard to find you. Locals will rescue you for money if it’s not to late in the day. Best practice there is to steer kite to the outside and go through the wave if you’re about to get smashed. Wind can be so offshore there you can’t pull off wave to the inside to escape. I learned the hard way. Amazing place.

    Releasing the kite saved it from damage true. What if your bar and lines wrapped around one of the young kids playing on the beach in the video and then the kite started death looping? What if it got swept up and blew into the carpark or traffic or a building or powerlines? I dont know if that's the right lesson here to always release your kite if you crash in waves...

  • @szymonteodorczyk8801
    @szymonteodorczyk88013 жыл бұрын

    I had a very similar incident with my kite at a spot in Poland. I tried doing a down loop jibe to toeside, but I started the maneuver when my kite was too low to complete the loop, so when it hit the water, the lines lost all tension, the kite rolled over itself, tangled up all the lines, I had to completely release the kite through all safety systems, then I was assisted by a random guy on a jetski who then helped me get back to the kite downwind, and get it back to the beach. I'm pretty certain if I wouldn't let go of the kite, I would have ended up in Germany after a very long swim.

    Hi kevin! It looked like you did a full release including the leash. Is this always the protcol when riding in (big) waves as performing a "self-rescue" is to risky getting tangled in the lines?

  • @willywendt6200

    @willywendt6200

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes it is! The Kite is just Stuff do not risk your life for Stuff. Often someone get your Kite and give it back to you. But getting your Surfboard is often a live insurance and a good way to go fast back to the Beach. So in some bad action make sure you get your Board and let off the Kite. Wave-Fightclub Rule number one “Don’t Drop!!!”

  • @daversj

    @daversj

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don’t think he meant to release the leash, hopefully Kevin will chime in. If you release completely the kite could hurt someone on the shore. Just flagging the kite will let the wave pass through it and usually drag you to shore. If your flagged kite is drifting over a reef, best to swim toward the shore but away from the flagged kite to keep the lines taught, less likely to catch the reef. Then reset kite if you make it over the reef.

  • @strekke1986

    @strekke1986

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@daversj pretty sure a complete/full release is what you are supposed to do in those waves, and that is what he did. You want to be completely detached from your kite so you don't get dragged when a wave catches it, and to avoid line tension that will cut through your canopy when the kite rolls in the wave.

  • @daversj

    @daversj

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@strekke1986 i have dumped my kite many times in waves, inevitable in wave sailing. Never had to fully release, just flag it. If you feel you will get hurt or drown release it. Otherwise just flag it. I would rather my kite get destroyed than hurt someone else in the water or on the shore. I chose a do a sport that has some risk. People on the shore made no such assumption of risk, and don’t know the risks of a kite and lines bouncing down the beach. The wind looked lite that day so the danger was less. Release a kite on a typical Cape Town day of 30kts and it would have kept going up the beach and into the road. Those are my rules, but maybe others do it differently.

  • @strekke1986

    @strekke1986

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@daversj He did a full release and that was his intention, as that is what you are supposed to do in those conditions. You can see he picks up the bar out of the water, he surfs back to shore unattached, and lastly Kevin commented above that it indeed is a full release that you are supposed to do. In big waves like that you will get dragged under backwards from your harness if you have only released the chickenloop, which is even worse than being dragged forward. Even more dangerous, the wave can push you into your lines while still attached by the leash, and then that same wave will catch your kite and then you are tangled and dragged under and in real trouble. Golden rule is to get away from your bar and lines ASAP when dealing with serious waves. And then try and get to the shore ASAP, preferably before your kite starts tumbling over the beach yes (although most of the time it will settle down quite easily once it lands correctly, which it eventually always does). In small waves a full release is not always a must, because you can problably relaunch, but even then you can get tangled and in trouble or damage the kite.
