For those missing context? This weird random cat thing is, for some reason, how Osaka imagines Chiyo's father to look, act, and sound like. It is never explained why. I've read the entire original Manga strip, and I STILL have no idea why the hell Osaka thinks Chiyo's father is a nigh-omnipotent reality bending cartoon cat. But given it's OSAKA, I don't think there has to be any sort of logic to it at all. Words cannot describe my confusion. I LOVE Azumanga Daioh.

It's an anthropomorphic spirit (kami) from the Shinto tradition. They often have animal features, float around, and are generally... really weird. People become Kami after they die. This may indicate that the father is in fact dead.

"How are you/Fine, thank you/I wish I were a bird" are stereotypical expressions you could find in the old English text books in Korea. Since most of them copied Japanese books, this is probably true for Japan, and that's the joke.

@@gradualdecay Yeah, this. It's to teach subjunctive mood (which occurs with conditionals). It's basically disappeared from modern US English though, so it's probably not worth teaching (which is sort of vaguely known in Japan now too, which add to the joke).

For those missing context? This weird random cat thing is, for some reason, how Osaka imagines Chiyo's father to look, act, and sound like. It is never explained why. I've read the entire original Manga strip, and I STILL have no idea why the hell Osaka thinks Chiyo's father is a nigh-omnipotent reality bending cartoon cat. But given it's OSAKA, I don't think there has to be any sort of logic to it at all. Words cannot describe my confusion. I LOVE Azumanga Daioh.
