One of the greatest musicians of the 20th century and a man who completely mastered his instrument. If you want to hear the extraordinary virtuosity of Goodman then his victor recording of the Tiger Rag.recorded in the 30's will blow you away for long long time.

@jimcrich I think that when Teddy begins with the intro (4 measures), he is supposed to play alone, and the bass and drums should join after he's done with this intro, that is why Benny looks at them because not only they began playing during the intro, but they joined late. Secondly, when the first chorus began, they do it at 4/4, when it should have been at 2/4. Only during the second chorus they are supposed to switch to 4/4, accomplishing what is known as walking swing.

King of Swing. Tremendous. His timing was extremely good and he was a nice fellow. Chose the best people for the band (sometimes its nice to be color blind and the good thing is and was that you can still hear the quality).

My god is that the infamous Benny Goodman "RAY"?! The way he keeps on STARING at the bass/drum guys is terrifying!!!! I listened to it over and over and find no problem with the rhythm so what is Benny up to??. I can't believe he was like that for all those years! He's a beautiful musician but ruins it for me with that EVIL RAY thing!

The intro was a mess, plus Benny liked his intros simple, usually only with 1 instrument. I'm with Benny on this one lol. But yeah, that evil ray thing... strong enough to kill a man.

How does one not admire the sheer mastery of the clarinet by Benny Goodman. Interesting that he took a break from the beginning of his solo ( near the beginning). Was this to admonish the some misstep by one of his sidemen with ‘The Goodman Stare”? Likely. He was known to be demanding and even prickly to work with. (Prickly being a close derivative of another word that I heard used to describe Goodman.) But aside from that, who was a better clarinetist? Anyone? I doubt it.

I am a big Benny Goodman fan and my band plays this number. My take on this is slightly different. Firstly it is Benny himself that starts the clapping so he is not waiting for the clapping to stop. . I think he lost tempo for a minute and deciced to drop out until the next 4 bar interval. Even with the best it happens !

@saxoclar Isn't it strange that most people are clapping on 1 and 3, in stead of 2 and 4 when it's jazz.

I think that you are correct Syipase. I wondered why he stopped playing. Thanks for clarifying. This often happens when our gospel choir processes into a church and the congregation claps out of sync. It's usually a mess til we all get into the sanctuary!
