This guy is cooler than we'll ever be.
My grandfathers favourite song .. Born 1906 and loved Gershwin all his life
One of the greatest musicians of the 20th century and a man who completely mastered his instrument. If you want to hear the extraordinary virtuosity of Goodman then his victor recording of the Tiger Rag.recorded in the 30's will blow you away for long long time.
G-men, Goodman and Gershwin. Quality is never diminished by the passing years.
Benny is of the Best King of swing
Goodman is very most Quality and nice Swinging Sounds.
Very, very wonderful
This is way better then the shit on the ratio now days :3
Swing king, let's here you swing. Can't nobody touch Mr. Goodman on dat horn.
Can you believe Benny is 71 in this video? What a musician.
AWESOME im in band and i play clarinet and i wanna be just like that benny ur awesome
BENNY NO 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting such a great piece of music! No matter what or where they play - this is a 100% pure jazz. Thanks a lot.
Yes! Right, saxoclar! here we get a wonderful example of what it must have been like to get THE RAY. Notice the small but Royal gesture with the left hand and the subsequent GLARE!!! grts Bernard Berkhout
Musik vom feinsten.
SUPERB....!!!
AWESOME!
Just what I wanted to here.
Hermoso!!
@jimcrich I think that when Teddy begins with the intro (4 measures), he is supposed to play alone, and the bass and drums should join after he's done with this intro, that is why Benny looks at them because not only they began playing during the intro, but they joined late. Secondly, when the first chorus began, they do it at 4/4, when it should have been at 2/4. Only during the second chorus they are supposed to switch to 4/4, accomplishing what is known as walking swing.
what FUN!!
King of Swing. Tremendous. His timing was extremely good and he was a nice fellow. Chose the best people for the band (sometimes its nice to be color blind and the good thing is and was that you can still hear the quality).

Talk to anyone who worked with him. Not really a nice guy.
oh my got its imposible!
i acually liked the song. i watched the music video last time, but it got rejected by the copyright on the second time i tried to watch it. so dis is good anyway!
Wow
My god is that the infamous Benny Goodman "RAY"?! The way he keeps on STARING at the bass/drum guys is terrifying!!!! I listened to it over and over and find no problem with the rhythm so what is Benny up to??. I can't believe he was like that for all those years! He's a beautiful musician but ruins it for me with that EVIL RAY thing!

The intro was a mess, plus Benny liked his intros simple, usually only with 1 instrument. I'm with Benny on this one lol. But yeah, that evil ray thing... strong enough to kill a man.
How does one not admire the sheer mastery of the clarinet by Benny Goodman. Interesting that he took a break from the beginning of his solo ( near the beginning). Was this to admonish the some misstep by one of his sidemen with ‘The Goodman Stare”? Likely. He was known to be demanding and even prickly to work with. (Prickly being a close derivative of another word that I heard used to describe Goodman.) But aside from that, who was a better clarinetist? Anyone? I doubt it.

Was he trying to stop the audience from clapping off beat maybe? Lol

No, it was an attempt to stop the irritating "rhythmic" clapping by the audience - in which he did not succeed.

@@lnwark Indeed, terribly irritating clapping.
Tamanho GG de Gandes Genios: Goodman & Gershwin !!!
Great performance.......many greetings from OK-Dreamband. CD "Clarinet-Dreams" is available for download (amazon, iTunes).
Yes i did notice that, but the reason was abaut the public klapping in the wrong time...Listen again please...Goodband!!
I am a big Benny Goodman fan and my band plays this number. My take on this is slightly different. Firstly it is Benny himself that starts the clapping so he is not waiting for the clapping to stop. . I think he lost tempo for a minute and deciced to drop out until the next 4 bar interval. Even with the best it happens !
@samjlomas I have this ligatue! A "boosey Howks ligature"!!!!
Benny had a wtf moment!, 😂
does anyone notice the drummer is out out of time at the very begining ? In fact benny stops and waits til the drummer gets caught up
@saxoclar Isn't it strange that most people are clapping on 1 and 3, in stead of 2 and 4 when it's jazz.
I think that you are correct Syipase. I wondered why he stopped playing. Thanks for clarifying. This often happens when our gospel choir processes into a church and the congregation claps out of sync. It's usually a mess til we all get into the sanctuary!
0:17 the infamous "Ray"?
Nothing around now like it😢

Clearly you've never been to New Orleans or anywhere else that celebrates live jazz
there are two types of ligatures, backwards and forwards.

not to mention the extremely off tempo audience clap regardless, this is absolutely wonderful
did he use a A clarinet?
Excel. Ad Infinitum
Oh dear... Benny hated that clapping which was very irritating indeed. The Japanese did not understand that....
