OG Kaya Butter Toast - Ah Seng (Hai Nam) Coffee

Few places still use charcoal fire for their kaya butter toasts, but Uncle Ah Seng stands by it.
P.S. He made kaya toast and kopi for Lee Kuan Yew's father before hor!

If anyone is wondering, they're at the Amoy Street Hawker Center! My girlfriend and I had our only kaya toast in SG there when we visited and we both LOVED it! The coffee was solid too!

I still like this old-fashioned way of having simple locally-made coffee and 2 slices of toast with butter and sugar (I don't really like kaya because it tastes differently from one another), tasting the half-boiled runny egg with a few drizzle of dark soy sauce and a sprinkle of pepper. And to enjoy it on the day you are free and/ with your family. Sometimes the best moments you come to cherish are really that simple. 🙌

Charcoal flavor on food is amazing. Even some restaurants don't bother to do that for their grilled meats... but he does it for toast!! How amazing is that! I can see why this is the best

Actually good old days using charcoal made all foods regardless of hai nan bread, boil soup or fried food taste 101% better than using gas.. A lot of old way of doing things no longer exist.. Modern people or more educated thought they are smart and want fast.. But until today a lot of good old days stuff although is slow but authentic more tasty and delicious esp kopi o thick and fragrance too.. Charcoal and wood better than gas... 😉 😉

@@SuccessforLifester Here's more info for you: If you drink tea/coffee with evaporated milk, I only know 2 big brands using King of Kings, which is made using 100% dairy: Yakun and Heavenly Wang. The other big brands uses other brands of evaporated milk which are not 100% dairy and are made with milk solids and vegetable oil. Even if they use Carnation brand, you'll need to look out for the words "Full Cream". If not, you'll see "Filled Milk", which is vegetable oil and milk solids. Just take note.

@@SuccessforLifester Yes, I always walk around coffee shops to observe their milk cans before buying. If all are using filled milk, I'll buy teh-o kosong. For those shops that use King of Kings or Carnation Full cream, I'll remember them and only patronise them if I have the chance. As for Yakun and Heavenly Wang, I just go in and buy. No need to check unless they change one day.

My family went to that store before and it was a very bad experience for us and we would never going to visit that stall again. Even thought their food do have standard but I think the most important thing is the character of the person (u can earn alots of moneys) but it will be too late for the auntie to learn. we order the butter bread but the auntie only gave us not much of butter and the worst part is the kaya was very little. there a chinese saying, (u earn alots of money but characters do matters) wish the auntie all the best in the near future

The oldest Hainanese coffee shop in Singapore belongs to Killiney kopitiam at Killiney Road. It started off as Kheng Hoe Heng Coffee shop in 1919 by a Hainanese migrant. Whereas in KL, the first coffee shop named Yut Kee was opened in 1928. Roasted coffee with sugar and butter was invented by a coffee shop owner in Singapore in 1929, and was made popular in Malaysia. Subsequently, coffee shops in the different states in Malaysia created different ways of roasting their coffee beans. Stop accusing Singapore for stealing your food , Check it out from the links below: remembersingapore.org/2011/02/17/singapore-kopitiam-culture/ www.sinchew.com.my/pad/con/content_2059299.html www.mscspga.com/%E6%96%B0%E5%8A%A0%E5%9D%A1%E6%B5%B7%E5%8D%97%E4%BA%BA%E5%92%96%E5%95%A1%E5%BA%97%E4%B8%9A/
