Offshore Rope Access Inspection - Rope to Rope Transfer Galore

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A windy rope access inspection day offshore. I found this footage on a hard drive and decided to make a video where you can see how the rope access training video's I have been releasing here at The Rope Access Channel relate to the real offshore world. You can see how all the safety equipment actually makes it harder to climb safely. This was filmed about 4 years ago in december. Pretty cold, so many layers of clothing underneath that coverall, add an inflatable life jacke, a radio and a camera and soon it will be hard to see which rope leads where below the chest ascender.
I really liked this job, climbing around alone with no one really having a visual. Radio contact every few minutes and that was it. Lovely day out at sea :-)

    Thanks, I'd love to make more. The challenge is getting on a jobsite that allows it, and where it is worth making a video about. Like at the moment I am on a long term job that is mostly work restrain work and we are not allowed to post anything. And it is something I would definitely like to do more of. To show the application of the skills from the perfect practice environment into the nitty gritty industry where we just need to get shit done!

    Great to hear Jim, I have some more footage lying around that I will edit in a similar fashion. One of the long long term goals is to shine a light on all the different facets of the rope access industry. I'd also like to get into how it works on plants and rigs. Permit to work, Risk Assessment and Method Statements etc. Unfortunately a lot of locations are against filming and showing how well they work on safety and maintaining there location....

    Great video. It gives me an idea. Would you be interested in making a video based on your experience about different industry specializations within rope access? NDT is obviously a big one but I know there are many "trades within the trade" so to speak. I would love to hear your thoughts

    Absolutely, that is something I have been working on for a long time. I have a few more on my private channel (Rope Access Playlist: kzread.info/head/PLbO6pVvsWX8EvBTxozVb0UOsFBSXCfNgZ) and I am trying to get jobs lined up where these two things are possible: 1) I'm allowed to film 2) Actually have time to film properly Unfortunately number 1 is already a challenge, and then clients usually hate it when I get out a camera instead of "working" I would love to dive deeper into the specific trades and challenges those trades bring when performing them from the ropes. Future plans for sure👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    It was actually sort of opposite.. we rigged from the top. I was suspended in the tail end of the rope. We had about 5-10 meters of rope rigged. The rest was up at the top. Or two end of a 50 meter rope poked through the hole. There would be 30 meters on the top. Does that make sense?

    Thank you 😃 Why would my spine bother me? Chaving of the harness is the worst I think. I have had low back pain but that is more from moving heavy gear around on the ground without proper lifting. And that can happen to anyone.

    Ah, so you're an NDT inspector? I don't think you've ever mentioned your trade. I am thinking of going into either insulation, masonry, inspection (Start out with Ultra Sonic testing first and get the other tickets as I go), or electrical/ plumbing I'm torn between the two. I will be breaking it down having 3 of the 5 and from there 2 and whatever I choose in the end. Was there other application outside of EMS/ SAR/ Military/ Police work that I didn't mention?

  • @TheRopeAccessChannel

    @TheRopeAccessChannel

    No I am not and NDT inspector. When I started a trade was way less required. Clients where happy if you could get to a spot haha. I can do it, I am just not certified. I was lucky enough to be early, these days a trade is better. And for a lot of work you dont necessarily need papers. (In the netherlands) Grinding, painting, some inspections, construction work, window washing. Often as a L1 or L2 you are support so the specialist can get to his or her workspot. There are a lot of things left out in your question. If you check out this video, I talk about it a bit: kzread.info/dash/bejne/po6oztCdirnWnrw.html

    To film I used a GoPro 7 Black and for the inspection my favorite Olympus Tough that they don't make anymore. TG8something. It broke right after summer after years and years of abuse. Perfect for inspection with a built in LED light and a very good macro setting. And the flippy screen is perfect to look under and over things. The newer models dont have that anymore..

    I have a question, how are you mitigating the risk of the working line failure when you have put yourself in the position of having your rig and your ASAP on the same line. Your are basically doing a rope to rope transfer with three points of contact which does not meet the requirements of IRATA. In my mind if that line fails then you are going to shock load your back up line with a toothed device or have I missed something when watching the video.

  • @TheRopeAccessChannel

    @TheRopeAccessChannel

    Жыл бұрын

    Great question! I am on two points at all time making small rope rope transfers. IRATA states up till 1,5 meter distance it is a small rope to rope and you only need 3 points. Actually two at all times but we have to make a third one first otherwise we can not move.So two at all times and for a small that would mean three practically. Unless more than 1,5 meters apart and/or out of control swing could be dangerous then you would need 4 points. At 4:50 I explain how I treat this and why that asap is there. The potential for a shockload is negligible. There is never any slack above the chest ascender and a swing would be small. Think about the rope to rope transfer you make normally. If the descender line will fail, you swing a bit and in this case the asap would probably hardly block because the distance traveled is so little. Unless you have been taught to always use four points in a rope to rope, then this sounds not right. 4 points is perfectly fine and not in the TACS or ICOP. I have seen people ascend ropes clumsier and heavier than the swing i would make here😂. Shockload is a very big word in this circumstance.

    Hi, I’m in the same line of work, drops inspection, rope access rigging. I was wondering what camera you are using? They are very strict on electronics outside accommodation on these rigs, so was wondering if you had a recommendation for what is safe to use.

    Because we only got 1 I'd per person and a dedicated rescue bag we keep sealed that has 2 more in it. I think keeping that complete is better for the rescue. I dont mind changing over in this situation. Saves me from keeping to move an I'd in hands moving it from the right to left side at every step. Which at that point could become a potential dropped object.. And it is just a good drill getting back to basics.

    "Illegal"...... Maybe it is a translation thing and there is no legal or illegal in this. It is not like the rope protection police will come and arrest me... And no ropes were harmed in the making of this video. ;-) This is a real life demonstration of actual work being done. Most of the edges were smooth enough and most of the time pressure on the rope was minimal or non existent. and each rope was only loaded a minute or so in each position. And yes, this was a constant point of attention during climbing. These things take careful thinking out. If it would be rigging were people would descend down to work on the water line, the rigging would be different. For this instance where I can literally touch the knots and monitor every single step up close, not a big deal, not dangerous at all and certainly very "legal"
