The worst important architecture I've ever been in, but the best auditorium I've ever been in. I have a love/hate affair with this hall.

I am invited to tomorrow's concert. I share your feelings already. I was so prepared to emerse myself in the 1880 when I get there but than this video showed me a MODERN steel structure 😭 and so Modern inside with the floral patterned seats. Hahaha guess I will not be wearing my 1800's evening gown and gloves....😢😅

My favorite band sparks are playing there tonight and tomorrow night. I wish I lived in La, I'm going to see them at the Albert Hall in Manchester in the UK in April. But this place looks amazing.

Lillian Disney initiated the push for a world class venue in the 80’s with a donation of $50 million. The project stalled for decades until this gem was finished in 2003. It’s predecessor, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (the Chandlers were the founders of the them powerful Los Angeles Times) tho cutting edge for its times when it opened in 1964, didn’t have the right acoustics for an orchestra, since it was a performing general arts center. (The Oscars ceremony took place there many times also). It is now just home to Opera and other performing arts. Both, along with 2 other small auditoriums, comprise of the Music Center of Los Angeles.

This video has been here for 2 years - no comments! Are people afraid to be critical? Judging only from this video (highly risky) my initial impression is that it serves its purpose well. A good and visually appealing main performance space with (we are told) excellent acoustics and good audience viewing - essential for a concert hall. Plus a good set of ancilliary facilities in attractive surroundings, plus a concert organ that dares to look different and be spectacular - I think it's exciting. From what I have heard and seen, it seems an excellent instrument of relatively modest size, but a size (and voicing) that serves its purpose totally. I am just at odds with the building's exterior. Looks to be thrown together from pieces of gigantic tin cans with no visual harmony. Perhaps that's just me - but remember, I love the adventurous organ!

Nice critique Mr Leech. Makes me want to get into that risky business myself. I would like to argue that the exterior looks more like a banana that has been peeled from the inside. As if something so much greater than its shell needed to burst out and be heard no matter what the stakes may be. Or maybe it's more of an exploding can of Something we don't quite understand yet. Who knows?

Simon, Thank you. Yes, I make comments ont things from time to time, but not often.Sometimes you become a victim of illiterate crazies and I regret the effort. As for the exterior, I go for the exploding can, but admit it may be a lack of understanding (yet I often thrill to imaginative architecture). Perhps to see it in the flesh would elicit a very different reaction.

Someone suggested that it looks like sheet music that’s been thrown into the air. I don’t think it’s the most beautiful looking hall but it’s unique just like LA. Very fair and even handed critique though.

It's exterior looks utterly ridiculous - so yes, "breathtaking" (1:20) in a bad way.
