it's actually not that dumb - if the hallway is already full of smoke, but your room isn't don't go out just to get smoke poisoning. Stay in and wait for the fire department to rescue you.

Actually, depending on the building codes and how reputable the building construction is, determines how you should behave in a fire. Many modern US buildings are made to prevent fires from spreading through the building, and it's actually extremely safe to simply stay in your apartment, even if the apartment next door is on fire... As long as the building is up to code that is. That said... I'm not an expert on building construction or safety protocols, and it's theoretically under optimal conditions that the above would be the case. In reality each building can have potential issues that reduce the effectiveness of safety measures, and each area may not require the same minimum safety standards.

No. Don't wait for rescue team. What if they don't reach you? Instead take a damp cloth and tie up your nose and mouth and try to escape. This was taught in our office fire drill.
