This is an EXCLUSIVE Hands-On Preview of the Nikon 400mm f4.5 telephoto lens. Nikon was gracious enough to bring this lens down for us to test out early and share our findings with you. We were not allowed to know the price, the launch date, the weight, and other specs. But I was able to take it to a Phillies with the Nikon Z9. I think Nikon hit it out of the park with this one.

I think Nikon hit it out of the park with this lens. What a solid option for people to choose. My biggest takeaway was seeing what 4.5 and 2.8 look like side by side. How much do you think this lens will cost???

Well done Jared and great job to everyone involved! Another great release by Nikon. Now tell them to hurry up with that 85mm f1.2 👀.

This must be a king of Size AND Weight AND Price AND Quality All in ONE, it Must be it!
Even as a happy Canon shooter I can‘t help but feel a little jealous at these new Nikon releases. From a marketing perspective they really have found a good spot complementing their lineup with mid-range lenses that fit right between the enthusiast and professional realm, making big lenses more accessible with little compromise on quality and performance

envious as well and tempted to switch. For sports, this 400 4.5 and the 100-400 are better solutions that the Canon 100-500 4.5-7.1

Damn!! Just take my money.!!!! Lol! I am mostly a. Wildlife photographer in Costa Rica and knowing how important it is to move fast and silently thru the rainforest I believe this lens would get those photos many of us has missed due not being able to react as quickly as we all wished! Can’t wait to see it tests in the wild!
Love what Nikon is doing, making very light and compact lenses.
This is fitting into the same spot as the Canon 400MM f/5.6, which is a legendary lens. If you're in the Nikon Z system and you're shooting wildlife or sports then this is going to be a great lens to have. And if you've been in the game long enough then you already know what to expect from this lens. Kudos to Nikon for getting this one made!
As a portrait photographer, I never thought I would need or want a lens like this, but this one Broke my heart, it Just looks so good.
Fantastic video. I love my canon ef 100-400 4.5-5.6L version 2 but I do wish I had a 400 f/4. I can’t wait to see the price of it, probably make some Nikon shooters very happy. Amazing photos you took with it as well love the colors. Thanks for another great video Jared.
Wow, that bunt shot is amazing. Incredible image.
Lens looks awesome, super impressed by the size. I wonder what it'll cost. Great job Nikon
I loved the comparison shot of the 2.8 right next to the 4.5, great video.
Great preview. Really nice. The lens looks great. I love your point at 7:22 about baseball photography. This is what I do when I shoot college softball. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Thanks!
This sounds great for me. I carry my D500 with 200-500mm by hand everywhere, so this + my Z6 ii should be a good combo.
Another informative, engaging review. I was gawking at how good the images from the 400 f2.8 looked during that review. As you alluded to, the images from this lens look remarkably close to the 400 f2.8 To see Nikon has produced another powerhouse lens that will cost substantially less is great news
Dang! Thanks for sharing the image samples between the 2.8 and 4.5! The weight of it already sounds SUPER nice. Lugging around a 400 2.8 might look cool but man, after a running around with it, I bet it can get pretty tiring after an hour of shooting with it! Can't wait to try it out at automotive events >:D Thanks for this preview, man!
Nikon are doing a lot of great things for wildlife photogs, I love the pf lenses and this one seems to be another winner. Z9 is a fine camera but I'm going to wait till they bring out the Z8 (a cut down Z9). Meanwhile short term make do with my Canon gear pre-ordered an R7.
This reminds me of an article I read several years ago about how really good f/4 glass was becoming the new go to, because it was faster and significantly better than the variable aperture consumer glass and the high end f/2.8 pro kit. This lens is right there!
Grand Slam presentation! THANK YOU!
Great preview and another amazing lens by Nikon. Very smart offering a 2.8 TC and a 4.5 in their lineup. Curious about the price especially compared to the 100-400.
Hands down, your preview was the best.
8:03 "I'm not allowed to show you the settings of these pictures for some reason..." show the evf with all the settings on the next shot. great video as always!
really excited about this one!
Thank you for this Jared.
Wow Jared. Thanks. I wish you had added a few side by side images of the 100-400 at 400. I bet those come soon.
This is a great lens In Japan, it hasn't been officially announced yet I'm looking forward to the day when I can take pictures
You are the best Photographer in the world!!!!!
That s crazy what a awesome lens ..if i shot sport and wildlife i would def go over to nikon when i go over to mirrorless
Seems like they are listening to you and loyal Nikon users. Great pictures!
I have waiting for this Lens!!
Props to Nikon PR for sending pre-announcement items to the youtuber who probably trash-talks them the most of them all. Very smart of them, because they know Jared and we all are secretly (or openly) rooting for them to get back on the leading position and even he's ultra harsh on them, it's all honest and actually positive feedback (even if it's negative).
looks crazy light... well kind of... Jared has arms for sure
Amazing lens. Great preview. 👍
Thank you for sharing the news Jared.
Thank you as this looks like a fantastic lens for a 400mm flow.
Nice preview review Jared! I think in some instances I think I prefer the background to be slightly in focus the way the 4.5 handles the images. It depends on the composition I guess. Saving the monies? Yes please.

great video. one suggestion, when doing the full review please compare the F mount 400mm f/2.8. my sense the price of the Z f/4.5 new would be similar to a second hand F 400mm f/2.8, and then the decision becomes more interesting.
It looks quite good. Quick question, how is the vertical shutter button treating you? I found it quite easy to trigger when shooting horizontal
Thanks, Jared, for sharing another video with all the great images. Can you please make a video for the Megadap etz 21 adapters with Nikon Z9 and Sony lenses?
Fabulous. Dear Jared, Please do compare with the 500 pf f5.6 f mount if possible on your final review. The 400 f2.8 is not everyone's cup of tea anyways. Also performance with the z 1.4 tc. Those images look too good!
Thanks for that preview Jared. Nikon is doing very well.

This is the lens that I have been waiting on. Now, I hope that they will release a Z90 to go with it.
Love Telephoto Lens Videos!
Great video Jared.. How does this compare with 100-400 at 400 mm f5.6 ?
Long time subscriber and supporter, never a commenter. :) Quick question to you or the community -- is the oblong shape of the baseball in several of these images attributable to electronic shutter? I am excited for the super fast shutter speeds available on the z8 and z9, but worry that I will get this effect on fast moving subjects. Thanks for any input you might have.
cool. Now i need a 200 2.8 pf that packs as small as a 100mm macro. That one would be even cooler and the lens i'd take out when light's done for the day while i'm still in the field. I've got my own tele and i won't bother carrying more if they aren't for an absolute other purpose
Very nice concise video- the other longer S lenses are out of my budget, but this one looks interesting. f/4.5 is good enough for me- add a tele-converter if needed- Nikon's high ISO sensors can take it.

Can it take the TC’s and in good light does it perform well enough with TCs? 400 2.8 Z not suitable for all situations like risky kayak sessions etc
I actually need this lens. This looks to be a smart offering from Nikon.
Jared did you do any video AF tests or are you saving that til the full review?
the benefit of the weight is surely there, but once you feel what's 600mm like you're not going to like 400mm anymore when it comes to telephoto lenses. i bought a sigma 150-600 5-6.3 and i absolutely love it. And the separation is brilliant past 400mm anyway.
Hey Jared, hope you are well! Any chance you have a full review of this lens? Thanks very much 🙏
Would be interested in a comparison between this lens and the existing 100-400mm lens. What would make an owner of that lens want to buy this new one? Would it be better enough to justify a new purchase?
I do like that they are doing lenses like this, for those who don't need 2.8 or don't want to pay for the extra speed (so, for enthusiasts or casual shooters who don't want to spend thousands on a fast prime). This is another lens that I think nobody really saw coming (we knew about the 2.8 version, but not the new 4.5 version). Hopefully they will do an 800mm "slower" lens (maybe something like an f/8 even) and price it accordingly (maybe $1000-$1500). Although I would also like to see Nikon do a Z version of the popular 300 PF lens.
I WANT THIS LENS! You've convinced me. $$ i have some saved up money. Only Nikon has this solution for this class.... I want to see more Nikon videos Mr.. P. I'm building up Nikon Inventory. I'm done buying Canon gear (just R1 then i'm done) and sold most of my Sony gear.
Are we not going to talk about the amazing shots Jared took from both lenses?
GREAT Video Jared
Cost is the only thing I’d be worried about, looks like a solid lens
Good video. Great photos. Side note. I will say you absolutely can take a Z6 or Z7 to the field I’ve done it.

Question: Need Fro wisdom: taking high school sports , have nikon z6ii, if I had to purchase nikon new 400 prime, or the nikon 100 -400 zoom both appear to be similar price range, a y suggestion?
That lens and the sample output is plenty usable. No complaints here.
Looks good!! I don’t think I’m ready to part with my F mount 200-400 VR I. It pairs nice with my D500 & Z9 for most of the sports I shoot. That’s gonna be a nice lens though!

Can you do a comparison with the Z 70-200 and the 2.0 converter? I do use this combination a lot and its very versatile.
Thanks Jared. This lens + Z8 ...you think best sports combo under $7K from any major manufacturer?
Nikon is getting there slowly :)
I’m wondering if you’re ever going to go back and do a review on this Jared. I think this is a rather unique lens with nothing else really comparable on other systems. Would love to see a full review.
Thanks! I just hope I can afford it on my retirement budget. It looks like a nice lens to have in your camera bag.
However one may feel about Jared Polin's personality (or rather, his "on-air" personality), I cannot argue with his photographs. Check out the photo on the right at 12:49. Despite being taken with the "lesser" lens, it is the better photo simply because the composition is so damn good.
I have an ebay purchased used tamron 100-400 4.5-6.3 and it's what i have. I've learned how to get decent images on it, but, man it's not very sharp. Better for landscapes than birds. I'd love a new z mount telephoto
What would be your opinion between a 200-500 f/5.6 and a 400 f/4.5 with my Nikon D850 for bird photography.
Did you ever do a post release update or review?
Jared, any idea when you'll restock the Vintage Film RAW shirts in medium?
I used a Minolta 400mmf4.5 on a Sony A77ii for years and loved the range on a cropped sensor body.

You da man! First up as far as I can tell. I’m guessing you have N idea of what this will sell for. Between pricing on the Z9 , 800pf& now this, = great business move on Nikon’s end.
I agree on it being a bit short for birding which is why I'm on the fence with it. I still shoot with the much cheaper 200-500 on an FTZ and I'm getting to the point where I want to upgrade but I feel like the options are limited. If I want native Z glass, its either this which is a bit short or the 800 6.3 which is more than double the price and pretty slow. (or I start selling kidneys for the big toys) I feel like the Nikon super tele lineup could really use something like a 600 5.6 at like a $5000 or $6000 price point to sit in the middle.
Jared, what do you think about the 400mm f4.5 with a 1.4 teleconverter?
Jerret ...your funny mate 🤣🤣 don't need a monopod ....1 minute later on his knees with a monopod .....but I get it its light ..Great review keep up the good work ..👍👍
For my purposes- I'd rather not have a prime lens at this focal length or the 800mm. Is there any rumour about a Z series 200-600 or roundabouts lens being released in the near future?
Brother what kind of Cannon zoom lens do you use in sports
exciting!
this is a great compromise 400mm f4.5 for the size/weight. Hopefully the price is cheap enough, I can see a lot of sport shooters who can't afford the massive price tag of the f2.8 jump to this if its like $1,999.99
I have the 200, 300 and now need a 400. I think I may have to go with the 4.5 for now. Now in two years from now I can for sure budget in the 400 with the 1.4tc.
you mean exclusive as the other 2 youtube channels I have in my feed with the same lens?
Can you test it on one of the Zii's when you get your hands on it again?
I love Nikon! Yeah
Hell....I can see a looong waiting list for this lens
I always loved F mount 300mm/f4 and wanted the same lense for Z mount. I didn't excpect 400mm/f4.5 but i guess it is like 300mm/f4?

Wow, wasn't expecting this today! I'm surprised it's not PF - I'm impressed they were able to make this lens without that optical formula. I was expecting it to be relatively affordable, but now I'm wondering just how low Nikon is going to go maybe $2k?
