Officer Buys Hat and Gloves for a Woman Caught Shoplifting
On December 6, 2020, The La Crosse, Wisconsin Police Department applauded one of its officers for handling a potential shoplifter with "true compassion."
The incident was discovered during an audit by the officer’s supervisor in which they reviewed random body camera videos of incidents to which officers responded.

    Literally in tears. After reading that she died. Back in January of this year. She was just trying to survive. She wasn't stealing shit to be an asshole. She was just trying to live and stay warm in this video. There's a difference in my opinion... When there are people that are stealing shit to the assholes or make money for themselves in a nasty way or for drugs that's different. But she was literally in this moment trying to stay warm and that makes this so much sadder in my opinion. I'm sure there will be people that won't think the same way, but it makes my heart sad

  • @rockethead7

    @rockethead7

    Yes, it's sad and tragic. However, I think your impression of her is skewed. Clearly, it seems there was more stuff inside that bulky coat, and I'm guessing she revealed the hat and gloves because it would gain sympathy, and she hoped (successfully) that they wouldn't make her reveal everything else she was stealing. And, after this incident, she immediately began stealing from Walgreens again, and they eventually arrested her for it. She also abandoned her two kids in favor of her meth habit, which she died from. Don't get me wrong here. I don't lack sympathy for her. But, sorry, she was a meth-head liar and thief who thought her drug habit was more important than her own two kids.

    @@dannyaoalsson Yup, addiction is a bad thing. And, as I said, I don't lack sympathy. And, while I don't have that problem myself (I've never taken drugs even a single time), I've dealt with enough drug addicts to know that you can't trust anything they say or do. This woman in this video went back to stealing from Walgreens immediately after this incident, and sorry, but I'm just not buying the notion that there wasn't a bunch more stuff in that bulky coat of hers (the claim of the original poster in this thread, who said that this woman only stole items to keep herself warm). She received an act of kindness from Walgreens, agreeing to let her go if she just returns the items in her coat. And, how did she repay them? By stealing more. Most sane people are thankful for second chances and leniency. Not her. She saw it as a sign of weakness, and empowered her to steal more, so she want right back at it until they arrested her. I think she was a very physically beautiful woman, and I'd hope that she would get past her problems. But, nope. Instead, she turned out to be a repeat offender, stabbing the people in the back that gave her leniency, and eventually her addiction killed her.

    @@glnga Good grief. She continued to rob from Walgreens immediately after the incident in this video. She had a track record. And, yeah, giving up a hat and gloves is an easy way to get out the door, hoping that they wouldn't ask her to dump the rest of her pockets. This is a woman who found meth to be a better thing in her life than her own two young children that she left behind. Let's get real here: if the only thing she was stealing was a hat and gloves, she wouldn't have come back for more stuff. But, nope, instead, she figured Walgreens was a nice easy target. She got away with it, and the cops even bought her stuff. So, she went back until she was arrested again. How do you know a drug addict is lying? Her lips are moving. And, yeah, if she continued to get a record, rather than being let off lightly, she may have been in prison. If not for the incident in the video, it would have been at least additional ammunition.

    Yeah I was homeless after serving my country. I wasted all my money on my friends and did some dumb shit and got locked up. (Armed robbery because I was down on money and I had an alcohol problem. At the time it was the only thing I thought could get me thru the night) Afterwards my “friends” where nowhere to be found I never really had a family either and no place would hire me for the crime I committed. I was effectively alone. I never stole much just a few small items here and there I tried to keep it under ten bucks if I was going to steal. I survived from fishing and foraging around the river shore that runs through the city. But this one time I will never forget, I took a bunch of food one time because I was tired of eating fish and berries. I went to pay for one thing of Raman noodles, and The owner said “are you gonna pay for the other stuff?” I assume he had me on video putting the stuff in my pants and jacket and I straight up said “naw I can’t afford it I’ll put I back tho sorry” and was about to put it back when he asked what my story was. After all that he said “you’ve made a few mistakes but you shouldn’t be punished for the rest of your life. It’s unfair that people won’t hire you because of what you’ve done.” He ended up offering me a job and now I work for this guy and have been working here for years. $9.47 changed that woman’s life. She got an opportunity to see how police officers really need to treat people in need. I’m not saying that shoplifting is acceptable but there are certain circumstances where are you just can’t help but feel bad for the person and feel extremely grateful that a good hearted officer was dispatched among the others who may not have been so generous and forgiving. Right. If someone's out there stealing DVD's and phones and ipads etc, then that's a bit different. But if someone is willing to risk prosecution for some cheap ass gloves and a hat then they're obviously acting out of desperation and they should probably be treated leniently. This officer did the right thing and Im glad that hes being recognized for it.

Other than that, I would have done the same thing (as I said), and I also said I praised the officer. I was just pointing out the irony that the "break" she got from the officer did absolutely no good. She continued to steal from Walgreens immediately after this incident. And, it's also tragically ironic that she might have been better off in prison, because then maybe she might still be alive today. I don't blame the officer at all. I blame her entirely. But, I'm pointing out that things in life are sometimes ironic and tragic, and good deeds don't always end up doing what you want them to do.

The 7-11 employee called the cops on me saying I was stealing food that they were throwing away. A south san francisco officer approached me after I had crossed the street and I explained what had happened. One cop left for like 15 minutes, came back with a huge meal from burger king. He told me to enjoy my meal there and to wait. He came back 30 minutes later with a sleeping bag, told me to take the night off and said he'll let the next shift know to let me sleep. I started crying, got help the next day for my addiction. I live in an apartment in Washington and have a car and a well paying job and I think about those officers all the time. There are countless situations where people call for help with things like simply asking for baby food and the dispatcher will put out a simple message stating that if any officers aren't busy and feel like lending a hand , they can. I was locked out of my house by my ex girlfriend one time because she fell asleep with her phone on silent and the additional chain locks and a secondary bolt were locked... with her phone on silent, I couldn't wake her up to unlock the door. I called the police to ask what to do, it was winter ... she sent out a message after I told her I had nowhere else to go, it went out to everyone and a policeman ended up calling me and told me he's done his shift in 10 minutes... He drove over in his family minivan and brought me hot chocolate and we sat in his van for almost an hour while I kept warm. It happens quite often because most police are simply people that care, even if their job pushes them to do things that seem sour while they are on duty .

    @Luda Cris There aren't that many homeless black people in North America. Also, Black Women get literally BILLIONS of dollars in financial assistance that comes from mostly white people... If you want to bring race into it, the hypothetical black women would be stealing out of greed and would be rude to the officer, even though she's got a bunch of welfare money in her pocket. This is true so don't try and refute this. Stop being racist.

I was watching her while my mom was at work, but I was only 13 and probably wasn’t watching her well enough. Well the next day after that, we got a knock on the door and it was one of the police officers from the day before, he had bought my sister and I brand new shoes and also bought groceries for all of us. This is really sad and I've never told this to a soul in real life, ever...but I used to be on heroin real bad, and one time I went into a local grocery store to steal tampons for a friend and an energy bar for myself. The cops were called and 'pretended' to arrest me, but in actuality bought the two items I attempted to steal and dropped me off where I was living at the time. I was so grateful. 😭 That was about 7 years ago and it still makes me emotional when I think about it. The cops could have a railroad in me because I had priors but instead they were empathetic to my situation. Shortly thereafter, I sought help and have been completely clean for several years now.

    Wrong, she has been the victim of bleeding hearts for far too long. Look at California with the exponential increase of tent cities, open drug use, open defecation, death, and disease. She needs tough love, to be institutionalized and forced to get clean of the drugs and/or alcohol abuse that has gotten her into this state in her life. Some people can't make good life choices for themselves and need a stern hand to make good ones for them, and once she is clean put her in a work program.
