I just boiled the wheels and it was easy to remove them from the axel... That was all, no need for the drilling or the supports.... but if you do tones of wheels, that may be helpful. Thanks for the advice! VERY USEFUL VIDEO! THANKS!!

How interesting that two people named Michael Wilson in the universe watched your video. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I think I am too lazy to pursue this method. Perhaps in a few weeks when I reach 62 I will give it a try. I also agree with the individual that stated it is easier to get rid of the cat. I too like dogs but do not have one at this time. I do have a wife of 37 years and an 18 year old daughter. I think they shed worse than a cat or a dog. I replaced the original casters with the five top quality casters (they look like roller blade wheels and support my weight. I have a second set at a cost of about $70 for five wheels. If I don't clean them I need to replace them every 12-18 months. This does not please the senior shedder. I will check out your other videos. Not going to try chemicals at this point. Again thanks for the video.

Thanks Ron, for the wonderful idea, though it involves making that jig. I struggled for about half an hour to salvage the two wheels from a caster so that they could be used in another caster in which the edges of the wheels were damaged. Though I succeeded, the wheels did suffer some degree of minor damage. I was wondering whether soaking the caster in boiling water might make the job easier. After seeing your video, I am sure that's a workable idea. Thanks.

Good Video. I think Ron can fix just about anything and he has given us an option if we don't want to spend the money on the replacement wheels. This is not that hard to try. I can always buy the better wheels later on if I do not like the results.

Michael Wilson They really roll smooth. If you aren't careful the first couple of days, when you push away from the desk you will end up half-way across the room. :-)

I just thought of something I think I might get around & trying out. Take a small bucket big enough to submerge in a solution of water & drain cleaner. Would that not dissolve the hair and such that usually wrap around the wheel axles, except for synthetic fibre.

Try Nair or equivalent, soak overnight, rinse out in the morning. Works for groomers, who encounter lots of hair. Much easier than drilling, prying, etc., just takes more elapsed time, and removing the casters from the chair makes it easier, though it can be done on a tarp or something, with the chair upside down.

Guess it is better to buy a new chair than all this drilling , boiling and hammering:). However, being a movie maker myself let me congratulate you for this lovely video and good audio. Hope it will be of use to people who badly need this kind of cleaning. Wish there was some easier method.

The easiest, and my personal favorite, is to replace the original wheels with rollerblade type wheels. Pull the old wheels out and push the new ones in. Quick & Easy wheel replacement and the rollerblade wheels have sealed bearings and do not collect hair and fibers. The larger diameter rolls around smoothly and quietly. Thanks for watching. I suppose, if they last long enough to get bound up again, you could drill and drift the other wheel so as not to over work the first one. Great tips, I never had much luck getting a wheel of the axle without creating more damage than I was repairing. My missus is going to get a surprise if she sees what I'm boiling on the hob.

Thank you for sharing this trick, but this get me thinking: what if I burn the hair and threads with fire? I know hair burn off fairly quickly, maybe the burning time will be fast enough for the plastic to melt, hmmm....

Yeah, I just spent the past 90 minutes playing with sharp instruments myself. then came the epiphany: KZread!!! So I'm watching this, thinking about how to clean that hair out, when it hit me... NAIR!!! I haven't tried it yet, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. The plastic should be inert to the active ingredient, which i don't recall... NaOH? Anyway, I'll give it a shot and report back if: 1) I remember; and 3) I don't dissolve myself. "HELP!!! i'M MELTINGGGGG....!!!"

+Hippiekinkster so, how did it go?

  • @Hippiekinkster

+TheJmes007 Well, it kinda worked. As Two Beers pointed out, synthetic fibers are highly resistant to attack by alkaline solutions... organic solvents which attack polypropylene carpet fibers will likely damage the wheels, too. I dunno what the wheels are made of; some are nylon but there's no good way to easily tell. i haven't had time to play around more, but possibly if one clamped the wheel in a vise, and then used a Dremel to cut a slot axially through the plastic down to the metal shaft... just thinkin' 8) I had some replacement casters, which I thought wouldn't work because the pin was too wide for the socket, but it turned out that there's a removable sleeve on the pin. I popped that off, and the pin then fit in the narrower socket. I'm going to Austin to live with my sister, so remind me again in about 3 months and I'll research solvents. TY, Amigo.

Thanks for the quick response, glad you got lucky with that pin, I started to clean my wheels with some scisors, tweezers and a flat screwdriver, got 3 of them clean and when I realized 2 hours had passed I decided to puncture the other two like the guy showed in the vid, but since I got no dremel nor drill with me I had to do it with an icepick and my stove, worked wonders lol, I think Im gonna buy the roller blade style ones soon. Good luck moving out broseph

Holy crap! You don't have the patience to remove fibers and hairs from five wheels, but you do have the patience to mill or fabricate 3 precision pieces of wood to dismantle each caster? I tell you what. The gott-dang pink plastic IKEA rolling chair with the haired-up casters that doesn't roll anymore, cost me about $25. I think I have the patience to go buy another one. You other DIY'ers go knock yourselves out!

replace the cheap standart plastic wheels with the more professional hard-rubber wheels made from steel (~5 per wheel) they are way more dirt resistant and roll quieter.

Why not drill out both sides of the wheel, remove the axle, and replace it with a bolt, washer, and nut? that way you can take it apart as many times as you want. I have a sewing room, and MANY threads are always getting caught in my wheels. I have stools as well as chairs that I always need to clean out

I'd agree since I'm not a cat fan but my dog creates similar issues so if you have a pet then his advice is good. Assuming you're willing to go through the effort. Myself, I'd be looking at the roller blade option since my dog sheds hair.

That little bit of hair and thread is NOTHING compared to what my wheels wind up getting from 4 St Bernard dogs shedding! I've had to pry the wheels off and hope they don't crack, usually I could clean them once but then the wheels never go back on as tight as they were and one will always fall off later. I decided to get the rollerblade style wheels mentioned, hopefully that will solve my problem, and for $37.50 that's great!
