+Zeus Poseidon People tend to bash on HoD as a whole because of dumb tracks like Wailing Way and the Luminous Caves. It has very few good tracks, like this one (and personally I love the track in Acqueduct of Dragons), but the rest is either non-memorable, or terrible (like the aforementioned tracks). It's not because the sound quality is bad, it's because the sound quality is bad and most of the music is terrible and doesn't try.

Whether a song is "memorable" depends on factors that have nothing to do with the actual song. Music, like any art, is largely up to taste. People bash any element of HoD, or HoD as a whole, for idiotic reasons that are far removed from what HoD actually is as a game. This song plays in The Wailing Way. I don't know what song you're referring to.

I've come to love it now too, but the simple fact is that its so unconventional, not "BAD" as so many people say. After SotN and CotM, most fans expected more of the same (in fact, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading the reason the sound quality took a hit was because they tried to make everything else seem like SotN, including visually) and at first hearing HoD sounds like a sub-par quality, noisy mess. Most people wouldnt take a moment to listen again with an open mind to appreciate what unique qualities it has to offer rather than whither it meets their expectations or not. For me HoD is not only an OST that tries to push the boundaries of its technical restraints (which always leads to at least interesting results, such as many osts in the NES era), but it also takes its own title seriously, leading to a different kind of good than the usual good that Micheru Yamane provided. At the very least, it gave us this track, which has become masterpiece level for me among many Castlevania masterpieces. That dichotomy between the layers is like nothing else. For this track alone I like this ost better than CotM's ost now, at least, which was also great. A bad Castlevania ost for me, personally, would be LoS's, because even if I admit the quality is good on its own, despite having no technical limitations like HoD did it still manages to sound or feel like nothing else in the series and at the same time tries nothing new as it just tries to sound like a modern big budget Hollywood film. Just boring, imo.

I mean, the soundtracks isn't supposed to be "good" to a point. The story of the game is pretty dark, and the music fits that theme really well. Successor of Fate, Offense & Defense, Chapel of Dissonance, Clock Tower Casualty, and even the blandest-of-the-bland Luminous Caverns all fit the theme of the game, with most of those tracks being really amazing regardless of the sound quality. Yeah, some songs like Luminous Caverns and Aqueduct of Dragons are a boring and repetitive, but the rest of the OST for the most part is really great stuff IMO. Not to mention the fact that the soundtrack HAD to use the GBA's internal sound hardware (which was the same as the original GameBoy's but with two sample channels added) because there was so much graphical detail present, such as many enemies being ripped straight from SotN with minimal changes. The OST pretty much had to be this way because the team wanted the game to look as good as possible after CotM's darker-than-dark lack of brightness siphoned criticism fromt he community. If anything, the uniqueness of HoD's OST is what got me to buy the game, and i consider it one of the better Metroidvania Castlevanias tbh.
