25 year wildland fire veteran here. Get yourself a foam injector, your water will do a lot more with less with just .5% or less foam fluid in it as the surface tension will be a lot less and if (heaven forbid) you ever have a car fire or fuel fire you can crank it up to 2% or more and snap on a foam nozzle and get actual foam which is also great for laying down wet lines in advance of a fire front to stop it advancing (like around a structure for example). Secondly, put that other stand on a tank stand say 15 foot tall with a fill line to your normal water supply (fit a backflow preventer to protect your water supply) and have a nice big 3 inch (at least) canvas hose that you can drop in the top of the truck tank, open the valve and have gravity fill the tank in under a minute. The tank on the stand can then fill while you use that load. Once you learn a bit about fire 500 gallons will actually last you a half-hour on a brush fire so with a decent pump on the new tanks at the new HQ (I assume you are installing some big rainwater tanks off the gutters on the new building) the white tank should fill by the time you empty the tanker. EDIT: Oh and if you want I can sketch out the plumbing layout for you to allow for recirc and drafting (pumping from a standing water source into the tank).

@@BirchBarkOutdoors LOL, yes. The newer systems inject post-pump so leaving the foam on and either opening the recirc or drafting using hard suction isn't an issue which is good because having to flush out a tank load of foam is a right PITA. Everyone has done it at least once if you have been in wildland for a while.

35 year volunteer fire fighter here, Few things if you gonna keep water in there long term go get some bleach or pool chlorine tabs to keep crap from growing in the tank. Make sure the lid is vented. That suction pump will burn up if it creates a vacuum in the tank and runs on lower than ideal supply. It could also collapse the tank. Put dish washing soap in the tank. Cheap and easy way to create a foam and will help make your water last long while fighting a fire. If you keep that truck parked outside make a cover for that plastic tank. Even being black the sun UV will break down the plastic. If you have stock ponds on the property I'd look into setting up a draft pump on the truck. You can fill from any pond or stream and fill that truck up fast.

You are partially correct. The civilian truck capacities have substantially increased over the years. The military vehicle capacities are stoic. A 2.5 ton truck is rated for 2.5 tons. Keep in mind these are specs for these vehicles in all conditions including unimproved roads. Yes they are over built, but that is how the manufacturer spec'd them to meet the government contract and requirements. The old M9xx series of 5 tons for example were spec'd for 5 tons capacity on unimproved roads, and 10 tons on improved roads.

You should watch the auctions for a water tank that is used on construction sites for filling the water trucks. They are on a stand and will fill your tank in a couple minutes. Ten minutes is a long time when the woods are burning. I like the foam idea somebody else suggested it would also help your truck fight longer if you were helping a neighbor away from your water tank.

Put the stand next to your water supply and run a fill hose from your water supply to the tank. @OffTheRanch Matt, put the White 500 Gal Tank off the ground slightly higher than the top of the flat tank so that if you use that 2 inch flat hose you have from the white tank to the flat tank then it will fill faster due to gravity but if you also use your pump it will fill even faster without overloading the pump because it will have the gravity flow helping the pump. Your 2 inch pump with a 6.5HP gas motor normally will transfer 145.2951 us gallons per minute at it's maximum rate when the water is being transferred downhill, if you are pumping uphill say from the ground onto a high truck bed then the transfer rate is much slower. To fill 500 us gallons from downhill takes 3.5 mins but uphill could take 7 - 10 mins & if you are in a hurry to get your flatbed tank refilled because you're trying to put out more fire then every min saved in refilling counts.

That way you pump the water in and fill up in ten minutes. Suction hose would have to be a solid hose like the first hose you got for this truck.

You need to mount the old water tank above the fire truck on some kind of stand. You can pull next to it and gravity feed the higher tank to the lower tank. Then refill the upper tank for next time. Your videos are the best!!! Keep having fun and enjoying your life to the max.

Matt, if I'm not mistaken, your F350 actually has a payload around 4,000 lbs (2 tons). Originally, a 1 ton truck did have a payload of around 1 ton. A 3/4 ton was around 3/4 ton, and a 1/2 ton was around 1/2 ton. Compact trucks were less than that. Now, the name does not denote actual payload capacity.

This is Central Texas specific, but the best thing you could do for brush fire prevention is to THIN OUT THOSE CEDARS! You would not believe how fast even green cedars will burn ... and they burn hot enough to take out your hardwood trees. I guarantee that a summer fire on your land, dense as those cedars are, will spread faster and burn bigger than you can handle with your fire truck. The good news is that their roots are so shallow, you can push them over with your bobcat. Start with the ones around buildings and hardwood trees. Drag them into your dry pond, and burn them on a windless day.

Matt take the white tank put it on a stand higher than the trucks tank. Then put a 4 or 6 ball valve with the same size hose so you can refill the tank in less than 5 minutes. Then leave the hose on filling white tank. I would have had a tank made to fill the bed and the same height of the rails of the truck. Get 2 more white tanks for 1500 gallons for stock pile. We have 750 gallons on our brush truck and we need to up the gallons to 1000 gallons longer time at the fire.

Matt you should look into truck mounted water cannons. There are front mounts, deck mounts and cab mounts. Being for the most part you would be running the truck yourself, these options would make the safest plan no getting out of the cab, remote control. Small fires yep use the hose and shovels. Just watching out for you.

Yes it's very capable... CAT diesel, and a military grade drivetrain and suspension. More than adequate. Your F-350 has a weight sticker that tells you your specific load capacity for your truck. (Your RAM, "Earl," should also have one of those stickers for it (as configured from the factory). These stickers provide the information that will give you your maximum load capacity. The Escalade will also have one, though you'll probably never need that information.

Also you can get a different nozzle that has a full stream and a fog setting on it.(❗️WARNING❗️the more times you turn a hydrant the more pressure will come out of the hose so it’s definitely a two man job.
