Off-Road Riding on the Beach in California is Coming to an End
Read Jen's article on Common Tread: rvz.la/3gUbrdR
California is banning off-roading from Oceano Dunes, the last drive-on beach in the entire state. But this isn’t the only off-roading area facing closure, it turns out riding parks in New Jersey, Utah, and other states are all at risk. Is it time to grab the pitchforks, or maybe instead an olive branch? At the very least, more awareness is definitely needed. Watch our video as this controversial ruling unfolds!

Here’s the thing. There is almost NEVER unanimous consent in the scientific community. Jen cites reports that say the bird is thriving and that the air pollution ain’t that bad. Well the Coastal Commission is not made up of a bunch of motorcycle and off road rec haters. They weigh the data they are provided and make a decision. The overwhelming data says the bird is threatened (and has come back from being endangered) and that there are significant air quality issues.

Sadly, every off-road trail I travel in Arizona is ridiculously trashed with cheap beer cans, tons of target practice-related garbage, and hazardous waste such as batteries, fluorescent light tubes, and used oil. If an off-road vehicle breaks down, it seems like the protocol is to just leave the chemical-soaked sands and busted vehicle parts too. I pay for several permits annually just to be able to explore my own backyard, but it’s becoming more and more restricted - likely due to all of the trash and abuse from irresponsible off-roading folks. I hate to say it, but if folks were a little less trashy when they went off-roading, then I don’t think the community would have such a problem with locations being shut down. It’s exhausting cleaning up other people’s desert trash, but I always bring and fill up a couple of trash bags just to make myself feel better. Sad to see the condition of our public lands deteriorating so rapidly… these last few years have been noticeably worse and with a few new companies renting OHV vehicles along the I-17, things have especially become trashed all along that highway. 😢

I was born and raised here. My dad built dune buggies and I have been going to the dunes since I was about 3. I no longer live there, but my family does. As much as I do not like all the traffic and tourists coming to the area, I know that the area needs it to survive. The dunes change with the wind and when it rains. I do agree that those who come to ride or camp should take care of the area, which it seems they do. Compared to the rest of the coast line of Cali, this isn't a lot. What Cali allows in some areas is far more destructive than what is going on at Oceano dunes.

We still have a vacation place at Grover at North 12th St and the frontage road. I skated every Friday and Saturday night at Old Man Forsee's Pismo roller rink in the 70's because it was cheap. I can still picture Bob and Newell surfing at 3AM by the pier. Grover City had the best tasting water until they got uppity and changed to Grover Beach. It costs me over $100 each water bill even though it's shut off and not a drop gets used until we come back every 6 months or so. Now the water tastes like rotten reeds. Dick Smother's of the Smothers Brothers sold my dad his 1966 Travco motorhome in 1968 and it's still behind our place in Grover. I don't believe for one second that isn't exactly what this is about. If it was about saving wildlife and combating climate change, there would be stipulations for electric bikes, color me surprised when it's not even mentioned... Jen specifically highlights that the birds are doing better than anywhere else, and an actual agency whos responsibility is geography did their own study and found that there are many other factors that come into play that effect the dunes.

As a native Californian for many, many, decades I am surprised it has remained open this long. Used to ride our dirt bikes next to PCH, racing around the oil rigs. And ride and 4 wheel at Lake Elsinore and the desert. And ride in pie plate races in the desert. A pile of tires would be set a blaze several miles out and its a full on balls out race to the smoke. lol (yeah, not burning tires is good idea) California used to be literally amazing and the best place on the planet. Currently live in the foothills of the Sierras and some good dirt roads still abound for riding. For now...

The bureaucracy and duality of California never ceases to amaze me. It’s just easy to see how environmentalism is so extreme in California, because the state also allows so much extreme environmentally negligent behavior. Like cities in desert regions steeling water from other states and countries so their lawns are green, to just going full throttle off road. It’s the state of mixed messages, bureaucracies, and contradictions.

I have lived on the central coast for 31 years now, much of that on the Nipomo Mesa and as always when a beautiful undeveloped area becomes discovered development happens and that’s exactly the case here. Builders from outside of the area saw $$$$ signs , this caused two things to happen, the removal of 1000s of wind breaking eucalyptus trees then the building of well over a thousand million $ homes directly down wind of the Oceano dunes, mostly purchased by people from Orange County and the Bay Area ( they were sold a false Utopia ) after actually living here reality set in ( there’s wind and not a lot of the creature comforts they were used to). A perfect storm for what’s happening now with the dunes. I miss the central coast of 30 years ago but I understand, My wife and I are transplants ourselves but we didn’t want to change our new environment that’s why we left our old one. This is a wonderfully researched video and super valid assessments, but as a local born and raised in Oceano, the large tourist crowds camping on the dunes are really what’s killing it. It gets rowdy, alcohol-fueled, and a lot of people who visit don’t care about the dunes or town outside of their use of it. Limiting beach camping but not ohv use would help, bc many like myself are tired of using our days off to help clean up the beaches after busy RV weekends but still wanna take that drive down the beach too…

The CCC is famously, hilariously corrupt. The organization makes sense in principle (protecting the coast is good!), but in practice it is a caricature of government mismanagement. An acquaintance of mine had to work with them to renovate an old dock in Newport Beach. Approvals must go through the CCC. They sent a long list of expensive, non-negotiable requirements for the new structure, for the 'community'. At the same time the CCC offered to waive all the requirements if they received a check for $500,000 instead. It was never about the community, it was about the money. The project got canceled, and everyone loses. That's the CCC in action. ETA: I do not take the side of the developers much, and I don't care about the off road vehicles, but the CCC is a joke. There is a middle ground here that would work for more people, but you cannot expect the buffoons at the CCC to figure it out.

This all started because of the building of new communities down wind and they started to complain about the dust. If the state park is a designated off highway vehicle park the costal commission should have no say on how the park is run. You also forgot to mention that a huge amount of the dunes have already been shutdown to vehicles and the park limited to 1,000 vehicles per day. It's already been shown that they are using faulty data to try to justify shutting down the only off highway costal area in all of California.

In the 70’s and 80’s I was a regular visitor of this place. BUT back then you could ride along the ocean ALL the way to Devil’s Slide as well as camp back at Lake Oso Flaco! That was Awesome! My grandfather even has a ranch that backed up the Oceano Dunes and we could easy open a portion of the fence and go riding anytime! Sadly ALL of that is now gone but a small sliver of what was!!….. Now it’s getting too dangerous to go out there on most weekends! The norm is now seeing at least 4-5 ambulances a DAY rushing down the beach to try and save someone!🤷‍♂️
