Off-road practice with our Yamaha Tenere 700s

We are very new to off-road riding, and riding in general. So Jon Øyvind took us out for a ay of practice. We learned a lot, but our poor motorcycles got to know the ground a bit too well.

Great effort, and great training! It is always such a balance to push yourself to the point of truly learning new skills, yet not so far to where you hurt yourself in the process! For sure, the more smooth and polished you get at the slow-speed skills, will translate into more confident riding at the higher speeds! Cheers you two, and get well soon!

Absolutely, the line between pushing oneself to reach new heights and not hurting yourself is very fine. We try to get uncomfortable, but not too uncomfortable. We really have to practice our slow speeds to get more confident and skilled 👌🏻😊

Once again a very good tutor in Jon Øivind. Learning to balance the bike also when having to manually handle it, is so easy to not getting extremely tired. Using the clutch as your brake when the engine is off, all those tricks we take for granted all have to be learned and practiced. A tip for both of you. Keep the bolts to the mounts for clutch and brake handle just a tad bit loose. That will prevent them from bending and braking during a fall.

I think it’s really great that you have the foresight to practice, learn new techniques, increase your packing knowledge, and study in depth what to take along with you. You might be surprised at how many fail in the early stages of their adventure because of the lack of effort that you all have done. Ride safe and continue your forethought right up until the day you leave!

Wow . You guys are fortunate to have a friend like that to help you learn more about controlling your motorcycle offroad . That's a big bike to learn on . Got my Tenere 700 last month but haven't had much time to ride at all . For your wife I would say just keep practicing , that's a big bike and I know that the throttle is very touchy . I know it will take me a while to get more confident with it . The Tenere is way different than my DR650 . I only have a bit over a year and less than 2000 miles of riding experience and only 45 miles on the Tenere . I had to use my clutch as a rear break and my front brake when I took a tumble on a very steep cobbly trail . Made a wrong decision when I came to a fork in the trail , should have went left . It was 85° out and I had all my gear on and it wasn't summer gear . No shade and a DR650 to turn around and walk down a sketchy trail using the break and clutch in 1st gear with the engine off , no power . Got the bottom and regrouped . Took the left side and had fun until another sketchy uphill twist in cobblestone and soft powder dirt . This time I decided to wait until I had more experience and a summer jacket . I was sweating so much that I was going to drink all my water and juice before I got halfway to where I was trying to go . Learned a lot that day and just went back on the highway and rode the back way to where I was going . Rode for a couple hours on easier wider offroad trails/roads and through small trails in the trees , fun times !

@@RidetheBean Oh it's par for the course when we go on and offroad . Remember there's a reason why your friend was wearing good quality protective armor . You have a good Klim jacket but it looks like a little more impact protection would come in handy . Most would say I over do it . Let's see , when the temperature is around 70° F or less I use the Klim Badlands Pro pants/jacket with Fox Racing Titan knee/shin guards and Fox Racing Race elbow pads also a Fox Racing roost guard . The shin/knee guards fit good into my boots but the elbow guards are a bit tight but not too bad . For warmer weather I got the Klim Baja 4 jacket . That is one comfy jacket . It's a bit lower in protection especially in the chest but man am I glad to not boil in that other jacket !

Excellent practice! International statistics show that 66% of bone breaks are below the knee, of which 57% are low speed ground impact. So good boots will protect you, however the best way to prevent it is to practice making slow 8 on different terrain. Try to make the 8 as tight as possible. Start with easiest, tarmac. Everybody should do slow 8s at least 1-2 every month, it takes just a couple of minutes. Add a hindrance avoiding exercise to it, as if you were avoiding and object or a breaking car. Do 5 left and right of the object. This will save your life in most accidents. Your reaction time is 2 seconds. You should always ride with pre-loaded break hand grip. With more skill comes cockiness, beware because it will lead you to do stupid things. Stay always humble on the bike and think SAFE!

Pia, looking forward to next Thurssssday. Maybe a good idea would be to sign up to an off road school where you can ride smaller lighter bikes to learn technique. Then try it after a few weeks on the T7. Its very heavy and you can see Pia start to tire. Can I ask Pia's inseam? I ask as mine is 28 inch and will be in a similar situation.

Nice video. Well done. I suggest you consider a smaller bike for Pia. She would probably improve her off-road skills quicker by training on a smaller bike. I think the skills will develop quicker and confidence will grow with a bike 50 kg lighter. Then try those skills on the T700 after more training. Maybe also consider a smaller ADV bike for the big trip, instead of the Tenere. Something like a Honda CBX 500 might be easier to handle?

Love your attitude guys, keep up the practice and you will get better every time you ride. P.S. Nothing wrong with slow speed practice on hard/dry tracks or bitumen. The stock tyres on the T7 are not that great on the wet/slippery stuff, so try to improve your clutch control and balance skills with exercises in a "safer" environment like an empty car park or simillar. It is helping me with my T7 trail riding skills. :)

I just subscribed to your channel and am enjoying it. I’m waiting on the delivery of my 2021 Tenere 700. If you ever travel to the US with your bikes you’ll need to come to NOrth Carolina and explore our islands which we refer to our outer banks. Our mountains provide some of the best riding on the eastern half of the US. Coffee and motorcycles. Two of my favorite things. I know the Tenere is a tall bike. My current bike is a KLR 650 which is slightly taller than the Tenere. How tall is Pia. She looks like she can reach the ground easily. I’m 172 cm. Did you have her bike lowered are you taller than me?

  • @RidetheBean

Welcome to our channel 😊 We would love to ride around North America! But that will have to wait a few years 😕 Coffee and motorcycles are a great combination 😛☕️🏍 The T7 is a bit tall, but not crazy tall. I am 187 and can easily flatfoot. Pia is 166 and has a lowering kit on her bike but still has to tilt toe a bit. She is learning techniques for short riders though and is getting quite comfortable on it. She has only been riding for a year and has become pretty confident in a short time. We also put some stiffer springs on the bikes which makes them a tiny bit taller.

Ride the Bean It looked like you lowered her bike. Did it change the ground clearance of her bike? I’m deciding wether to lower or not. I’m much older than you two but still venture off road quite a bit. But the older I get having to move as quickly to keep the bike upright isn’t as easy as it was 40 years ago when I started riding off road. I bought the Tenere to ride to the Arctic circle and explore western Canada where my wife is from and Alaska. Safe riding.

  • @RidetheBean

    @RidetheBean

    3 жыл бұрын

Wow! That will be an amazing trip! Would love to do the same one day! It does lower the ground clearance a bit, but not too much. The worst part is that since the lowering links are a bit shorter, the bottom of the damper protrudes a bit more and are a more risk of being hit by stuff. But it won’t be a problem as long as you don’t ride the craziest terrain and super hard. For the way we ride it is no issue at all 🙂

That really depends on your preference. Personally I like more fruity coffees, so my favorite is the fruity bean. But most coffee drinkers prefer a bit more standard coffee flavor with more nutty and chocolate notes. So the nutty bean is a more typical breakfast coffee. It is really nice in the morning 😛 On our we store you can choose ground or whole bean 🙂

Practice slow turns in a parking lot, everyday for a 10-15 minutes, until you get the muscle memory set. I do this with my KLR until I can do circles with the handlebars locked. Then practice on flat gravel. IMHO the T7 is to big for the little lady. Not worth the risk. For us mere mortal riders, on nasty ground, one has to be able to "duck walk" a motorcycle up or down step terrain and have the strength to support the weight of the bike. Interesting video and informative, but I cringed watching it. Be safe!! Picking up my T7 next week!!
