Off-Grid Living In The Woods

We finally tackle the day we've been avoiding... Bring on the Cabin Bathroom Build- Spooky! Time Time to Fix up our Cabin in the Woods!✨🛠 But first, if you've been wondering whether or not to get a wood-burning stove, we can now answer definitively: YES! Our whole cabin has been transformed and feels so much more cozy. An added bonus is that it dries out the air, which can be a problem in the winter when things get unexpectedly damp. We are now officially ready for winter! It can feel isolating without the safety net of heat and electricity a city can provide, especially when you're living off the grid on 15 acres of property (4046 sq m / .4 hectare). Today we're determined to try to finish the bathroom in one go. Every time we try, we're pulled in 10 different directions, but we have to get it done because we can't keep using an out house in the freezing Canadian winters. And as breath-takingly beautiful as it is to shower in nature, we'll eventually need a proper indoor shower. We started out with a layer of RedGard for the tile, which is a "waterproofing and crack prevention membrane" that will help prevent cracks with movement. It's not always necessary for an entire bathroom, but ours is so small that we decided to go all in! Next comes a layer of ditra for more waterproofing, and that requires a lot of waiting for it to dry. So we tackled the electric lines from the solar to the electric house! Whew! We did a lot of work in this episode, but could always use your tips. Did we miss anything important?! Comment below!

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

So glad to see you use the vacuum trick to pull the wires!😁 You need to plan your shower and toilet drain! Pick a location which does not run into a joist under the floor. Make sure the toilet is not too close to a wall on the right or left side. Highly recommend you get a Toto toilet (Drake II). When you tile the walls, get a laser level and draw a vertical line in the center of wall. Draw a horizontal line at the top of the first row of tile. Work up from the bottom and from the center to the corners. Your cuts will be in the corners. Use thinset on the floor. But, after 40 years of doing this, I have switched to Omnigrip mastic for the walls! (From the same company that makes the red guard) It is soooo much easier to use. Check level and plumb every 3rd or 4th row. Do not count on spacers alone to keep the tile alined. Finally, rent a wet saw for cutting the tile.

Tiling, don't make the floor joints too tight about 6-8 mm get the tile spacers. Set out the floor tiles so that you get large cuts, small cuts are difficult even with a disc tile cutter. Set them out from the centre of the room in both directions dry (no cement). Sort out whether it is going to be a tile on the centre lines or a joint. Mark your setting out lines and carry it on up the walls. Use the same size tile on the floor and wall, a similar colour will help to make the room feel bigger. Good luck, keep your tools very clean, wash every thing up between mixes to make sure it is all very clean.

You two are building a beautiful space to live. And your showing the world ( youtube world) that women can do anything we set our minds on!! You so rock!
My favourite couple is at it again, I can't believe you were told the wrong information for the bathroom the first time. Good for you Crystal in trusting yourself and asking for a second opinion. Off-grid electricity one step nearer, your earlier groundwork made it so much quicker getting the cabling done. Love from Mike. ❤

There is nothing the two of you beautiful ladies can't do. You conquer every task you set to achieve 💪 You girls are amazing 👏 ❤
You two are two of the gutsiest people I know, as there doesn't seem to be any tasks that you two can't do. Your home is coming along nicely. Crystal, Jazz was correct when she said you nailed the landscaping. Very professional. I've never seen the vacuum trick, but it worked nicely. Awesome video!
Start your tile layout in the middle of the section so that your perimeter tiles are cut to the same width. Use silicone to seal the inside corners because the grout always cracks at the inside corners

Shorts are a really good tool for creators. It’s to bad you don’t support them in growing their channel to gain even more of an incredible audience. You should really look into the benefits for creators and viewers due to shorts. Constant notifications would be frustrating. Maybe KZread will change that so you’re only notified when long form content comes up? Let’s hope :)

@@Vanwives oh absolutely! Shorts are definitely great for growing an audience cos they are such a quick form content, that I understand. It's just frustrating when I get a notification & I'm excited to watch a new 10 to 15 minute video and I set time aside just to click the notification, only for it to be a short. I, too, really hope KZread changes the way notifications are set up so people can opt-out of shorts notifications or get a weekly "shorts" compilation notification, or at least have the notification say that it's a short so I can choose to ignore it for later. I would re-subscribe to many people then. I still enjoy watching y'all's reels on instagram, cos that's what I go to instagram for.

When natural brunettes infuse too much blonde highlights, it gives the appearance of looking dry. You are wanting to live the natural life; might as well give your hair the opportunity to be its original self.
Love the disorganised chaos of getting the jobs done a little at a time. You passion for learning and mucking in to complete tasks is truly awesome.
ok ... love you guys! Bangs = cool too! Bathroom... What is the layout? where are the services? (drains, vents, water supply, air vent for poo smells and moisture) STOP STOP STOP! This needs to be settled first. AKA 'rough ins'. Talk to me! or someone. If you haven't got that part, it may shut the bathroom work down for the winter. Is your basement a crawl space? Heated? accessible? You got this!!
So many tiling tips to offer, but few that can be sufficiently explained within a youtube comment. For now, the easiest tip to offer is take your time planning the project. It's much harder and expensive to do it twice. You two tend to pick up any skill you try, so we have complete faith in you. You got this!

Hey gals. Lovely to see you progressing with the indoor work, as well as the solar power system - you'll be living in luxury in no time! I just want to mention that - at 13.14 there's a shot of a plant in the greenhouse which appears to have creatures living on it. Aphids, maybe? You probably want to get rid of those before they infest all of your greenhouse plants. If it is aphids you'll be able to treat them with soapy water (I use my washing up water!). Alternatively you can buy some ladybirds (or the Canadian equivalent) to naturally get rid of the sap-sucking little monsters!
FINALLY, Let the fun begin full renovation of the cabin ☺️

Hallo Gals. I don’t know if you will put a composting toilet in your new bathroom. But if you don’t ; you will need a toilet drain and a shower drain and rough plumbing for faucet’s and water supply before you continue ahead with the waterproofing and the tiling. The same for the sink. I am a Journey Woman carpenter and have done many bathrooms. If you have any questions I will be happy to help.
Schulter is a great system. If you opt to use their interior or exterior corner bead, while the metal are more durable, working with the plastic is much more forgiving, and way easier to cut. Definitely get the locking space wedges for setting your tiles, it’s worth it. They’ll hold the tiles evenly in place, and as always measure twice…. Cut once. 🙏😁❣️
👏👏👏👏 Looking so great! There's a problem??? Put the Vanwives on it and the problem is solved🙌🙌🙌 Good luck with the next step of the bathroom build🤞🤞🤞 Stay safe, be well and see ya next week👋👋👋👋

Ok, I’m super pumped to see how the washroom renovations come together.
The Schluter foam kits are amazing. Oh and once you pick your tile plan the pattern pre cut as much as you can so the tiles are ready to install and your thin set won’t dry out. Oh and you must back butter each tile.
Adore the two of you! Try lighting your woodstove with a blow torch. If you pre heat the chimney a bit with the torch and then light your kindling you get enough draft to prevent smoke in the house.
I am so blown away with you both! Congrats on the wiring hopefully soon you will have your. Solar electricity! Love you both are truly showing a loving couple what can be achieved working together!
I'm very pleased that the two of you found each other in this journey of life. My wife and I meet on her b-day and married 35 days later. Last month on the 6th we celebrated 40 years together. Our health isn't the best buy far but I wish we had tried some different choices through our journey and see how that would have developed with our kids and granddaughters (4). Be good to each other and thrive with your experiences. Jim from Cincinnati
We used a rubber type water membrane instead of the product you are using. But either way, cut and installed a drain, laid down the membrane which laid across the shower area and went up on the wall roughly 8 inches. Used seam tape for the corners, poured cement on top of the membrane and contoured the slope towards the drain so water would flow towards the drain. Applied ceramic tile adhesive to the concrete and used a 1/4" square notch trowel to spread the adhesive evenly. We laid small ceramic tiles for the floor and 12" x 12" ceramic tiles on the wall surrounds. Something we wished we would of installed was the in-floor electric heating mats, so you could turn on and have a warm floor especially during the winter time which makes alot of difference especially for the bottom of your feet. We incorporated a bench within our shower area so the wife would have a place to prop a leg when shaving or to sit down while in the shower. Hardest part of making a shower is choosing the tile you want to use because of all of the shapes/ colors/ textures/ size of tiles available. Take your time and have fun its a great experience to do it yourself.
