Off grid Lead Acid battery bank repair

Ғылым және технология

We had a bad cell in our bank and had to replace it with a new battery, I also took a minute and did a quick overview of the new system that we are adding to power the new wood shop.

    Greetings from off grid Oregon,I think Roy is right. I have a 24 volt system and my absorb voltage is @ 30 volts for 3 hours. My battery bank only has eight L-16 batteries and my ending current is 6 amps. I use more water this way but sulfation is not an issue so far. I also do not let the batteries get below 88% SOC. I burn more diesel this way (27 gallons last year) but I hope to get 12 years out of my batteries. I have a friend who has been off grid for 40 years and he said I could get 18 years from them doing it this way. That's how long his first set lasted. He has the 5000 series Rolls now. Thanks for the video and I just subscribes too. Not trying to give advice when I should be learning from you. I just wanted to share my thoughts on what I have found.

    You should also get an internal resistance meter to keep track of battery health. :) It's helpful to know what cells or batteries are beginning to go out and are not holding up well. Also how often do you need to water your batteries? And how much % of the battery capacity do you use on average throughout the year (I know it might vary greatly by season, but I'm curious).

    the benefit to the mate3 would be pushing the data to the cloud, if you add a flexnet and a shunt you can then also access the logging feature to better evaluate the health and constant SOC of your system

    @JasonAndrade427

    6 ай бұрын

    Hi Ron, you know I am not sure of any BMS for lead acid batteries. Unfortunately with lead acid batteries they really just need to be monitored with a hydrometer to see the specific gravity of all the cells on a pretty consistent basis. For a while DEKA was trying to release a sealed lead acid battery that had a BMS and I was pretty excited about it but lithium was just breaking through and I think it killed it. I will say that my first off grid system I built had a pretty monster seals lead acid bank (telecom) style and it lasted 15 years

    Off grid in Tombstone, Az here. I have a question regarding replacing batteries. I’ve only lived off grid for 3 years now and we have a 16 count lead/acid battery bank. When we first moved in, we were told by an electrician that when one battery goes bad you have to replace the one next to it also. Is this true? If so which one do you replace the one on the right or left and how do you know?

  • @JasonAndrade427

    @JasonAndrade427

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure that's actually true or not, what happens when a battery goes bad is a cell dies or shorts. This means the rest of the batteries have to absorb the rest of the voltage as it usually isn't caught until to late. The extra voltage then will typically take out the next weekday cell, when I have replaced banks the bad batteries we're typically random

    7 жыл бұрын

    Looks like 2 strings of batteries so if we devide 16.8 by 2 it's 8.4 amps per string. That should get down to about 2 or slightly less. Your at 58.8 volts decide that by 4 for thinking purpose it's 14.7 my findings that's way to low. Around 15 is more realistic and if your useing your batteries at all 3 to 3-1/2 hours be more like it. A refractometer will tell more but the current at the end of the absorb cycle should end up below 2 amps per string. As the battery resistance goes way up when its fully charged

    I know this is an old post but what was the age of your battery when you added the new replacement. I have a four year old bank and one cell died in one of the battery so its throwing off all the others in series.. is it still possible for me to add a new one or is the bank too old? Appreciate your input.

    they were only 4 or so years old, I did not properly charge these though as I needed more solar but funds were tough as this place took so much $$ to make it livable in the beginning, in your situation and sorry this is so late, you could possibly add one but it would take a lot of the load because have less resistance then the others and likely you will see other cells start to also fail like dominos from my experience

    Michael McCracken hey thanks for the good review! I would rough guess 25 kw for both systems with about 13kw of pv. I would say this is way below normal as I received some amazing deals and trades along the 4 years I have been working on this system. I would say to replicate it with new material at this level would be around $75k. Not many people need dual off grid systems though, trying to do all the fabrication and projects off the grid and using sun power over a propane generator has added some extra expense. I also have designed in some other future additions that added a little extra cost also. Thanks for watching

    yes it causes inaccurate readings. Its not so much that you rinse with distilled water between readings, but you can fill and empty 2 or 3 times with the electrolyte (you want to read) before you actually read it (from that same cell). so you, in essence, are rinsing (diluting) with the electrolyte before you read that particular cell. repeat for each cell. When finished with all your readings, wash out hydrometer with distilled water. Roy Amberg is right, refractometer is nice but requires good light to read. If you are in basement, stick with a temp-compensated hydrometer :-)

    I was harder on them in the beginning of there life as I had to build this system incrementally and had to rely on the generator as a primary charging source, also I am have pretty good usage and could use more storage now as we are doing more building on the shop but I wanted to used them as long as possible before replacing them with a larger Amp hour bank. MrBugsier5 I think it will be hardest in the new cell as it should have less resistance? Everything I have read and learned about adding old batteries to new is that the new one degrades to the old ones. Interestingly I have done a fair amount of battery stuff but most people don't usually catch the first failed cell it usually wipes the bank out. So we are watching them closer weekly instead of monthly to see if we see any other weak ones, it looks like I might have picked up a battery manufacturer sponsor for my channel that might be sending me 24 of there new 2 volt agm L16 batteries for the new custom rack!!! CANT WAIT
